Re: NEW TOPIC -- Workload move from z/OS to z/Series Linux
Hi Alan. We have moved about 3 small and 2 large Oracle applications over from z/OS. I got some good suggestions. Thank you! Someone asked what we run on z/OS. I don't know. It seems a bit strange that a VM system programmer is being asked to do this. I will no doubt find out one of these days. But so far I have to report that no one is doing this except one shop. We've moved IBI's I-Way and WebFocus from z/OS to Linux on zSeries, and actually got an improvement in performance. (We also moved I-Way and WebFocus from a Solaris box to Linux on zSeries and got better than 60% performance improvement. Not germane to your question, but possibly interesting...) We've moved a couple of applications from Intel Linux to Linux on zSeries. We're rejected a few projects because of the lack of vendor support (i.e. Sybase). The rest of our load are made up of new projects as opposed to relocating any workload. -- .~.Robert P. Re: NEW TOPIC -- Workload move from z/OS to z/Series Linux
Alan, we moved our entire WebSphere (JAVA applications) environment from z/OS to z/Linux. Saved a bunch on liscensing, we already possed the distributed WAS liscenses. Nearly all of our our current java apps do little more than replace 3270 screens,(no heavy cpu intensive work) most of the data and computation is still preformed on z/OS. The data is passed via HiperSockets. It has worked wonderfully for us. Response times improved dramatically for our apps, primarily in avoiding WLM configuration 'stuff' . As such, new java application developement has largely been targeted to be deployed on zLinux. Has anyone actually moved workload from z/OS to z/Linux? Yes. Application development and testing, some DB/2 work, Oracle as several people have mentioned, document conversion (PSF to ), dataset compression and encryption, archive conversion, Websphere work. How much more do you want? 8-) -- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390

Re: NEW TOPIC -- Workload move from z/OS to z/Series Linux
We are currently working on moving our home grown 3270 application from z/OS to a MFL environment using WAS 6.1, DB2 and a workflow engine from Fujitsu (Interstage iBPM). It will be a J2EE enabled application. We are also moving some of our 3270 traffic for mainframe connections to Linux using HATS in the short term. Still working on getting things into production, but we will be getting there over the next few months as workflow rolls out a few applications and our initial Java framework (admin portal) is deployed. On Jan 31, 2008, at 7:56 PM, Alan Ackerman wrote: Has anyone actually moved workload from z/OS to z/Linux? Yes. Yes, people have. It usually happens for licensing reasons. Either because IFLs are cheaper than CPs or because Linux licensing, even on Z, follows the vendor's Open Systems licensing structures rather than their mainframe licensing structures, and is thus a lot cheaper. But so far I have to report that no one is doing this except one shop. I have seen more than one shop do this, and helped more than one shop retool to be able to do this. No, I can't tell you who. Re: NEW TOPIC -- Workload move from z/OS to z/Series Linux
There was a guy I talked to a z/Expo. Small customer but they had moved about all their DB2 over to Linux. I haven't seen him ever post here though. There's some quiet folks (unlike us :) out there. They are usually govt places or employers that don't let their folks say what they are doing. MQ Series and WebSphere Message Broker would be some other things to look for. But I think you'll need to inventory the z/OS stuff first! Good luck! Marcy Cortes This message may contain confidential and/or privileged information.
