No, the guest OS must be ported. Xen runs in ring 0, guests run in ring
1. Linux has been ported (2000+ lines of code change), XP has an
incomplete port (4700 LOC and counting), and a NetBSD port is underway.

True, but it is GPL so it might be possible to use
it as a base for a VM/{IA,AMD,PPC} whatever.

Hmm.. I would say the OP got the interpretation correctly. Xen runs
specially ported versions of various OS's. Will Xen do what "we want it
to do" someday? Not sure. Their tight ties with Microsoft will make a
true VMware replacement nearly impossible (Microsoft just won't allow it).

Although the page is a little hard to understand, I think the 'ported' OS is
the one that runs XEN. The guest operating systems would appear to be fairly
standard, although it appears that special device drivers would be required.

Hi Mike,

Thanks much for the info, looks interesting. My immediate concern, however,
would be the fact that the operating systems that run under the control of
"Xen" need " to be ported" to it. That severely limits the
usability of any partitioning software, IMHO (i.e. that the guest must be
aware of the partitioning software host and modified to run "under it").
