Re: Detecting RHEL console disconnect/reconnect

Thanks Neale, I hadn’t thought of that. I can make that work. Not my
preferred solution but reasonably acceptable to me. :-)

Cheers,

Do you have Broadcom's VM:Operator, Velocity's zVPS, or IBM's VM Operations
Manager (or even good old PROP)? If so, you could create an action routine that
would intercept the DISCONNECT/RECONNECT message.

Detecting RHEL console disconnect/reconnect

2022-02-01 Thread Donald Russell
With RHEL running on VM is there an interrupt or something that Linux can
act on when the console reconnects or disconnects?

If there were a vm event for those I could easily handle it outside Linux
and invent my own trigger, but cp doesn’t pass those events to *vmevent :-(

Maybe a udev rule to script something when either of those events happen.

I could do some sort of polling thing that uses vmcp q userid to see if I’m
disconnected or not, but that sucks and if that’s the only solution I think
I’ll have to pass. Or settle for well under real-time action. Hmmm

Cheers,
Don

Ron,

If your emulator is assigned a specific slot on a HMC/ICC then the slot
on the ICC has to be reset.
If you are going directly into TCPIP and there are no specific exits
that assign you to a particular terminal then I am not sure what your
problem could be.

Usually the first case above is the problem.

Re: Reconnect

2014-12-11 Thread Poirier, James
Ron,

If your emulator is assigned a specific slot on a HMC/ICC then the slot
on the ICC has to be reset.
If you are going directly into TCPIP and there are no specific exits
that assign you to a particular terminal then I am not sure what your
problem could be.

Usually the first case above is the problem.

I think you already reconnected to the machine when you said you got an
empty screen.

Try pressing twice, it will (hopefully) work.

For the ISVs out there:

Check out the feature article in Unix Sysadmin magazine this month on
OpenPKG. It's an excellent description of how to package your tools in
a way that:

1) DOES NOT spray files all over the file system.

2) DOES allow easy installation and upgrades, as well as version
coexistance in a RO environment.

3) Why this is important.

4) How to work around some of the deficiencies in RPM.

It's available online at www.sysadminmag.com.

(cough) I'm gonna say it again:
The "product" should be run from a sandbox EXEC
and the customer should be able to do whatever he blankety-blank wants
with "PROFILE EXEC". Give them a sample. Let them customize it.

(For those who do not know,
this is a point where Alan and I disagree.
Though on many other points we are in "violent agreement".)

On UNIX (thus on Linux)
many of the best products live in their own "sandbox".
Some call it a "product home directory". Others might call it
a "package root directory". VM is a superb example of this
where we enjoy Service Virtual Machines that not only can be
isolated to their own minidisk (or two or more; it depends)
but may also do so read only. (R/O sharing ... what a concept!)

Substantial portions of the VM TCP/IP service machine suite can be
made to run from a common PROFILE EXEC with the "product EXECs"
invoked automatically. This is not how IBM ships VM TCP/IP,
but it works VERY NICELY. Many many other VM based services
run this way without being at odds with the vendor.

The equivalent commands in SuSE's way of doing things is
"rcnetwork stop ctc0" and "rcnetwork start ctc0". Note that you may
loose your default route with the ctc interface down, so you will
probably want to enter "rcroute start" for good measure. Also note that
even if you only have 1 network device, entering the device argument on
the command avoids broadcasting the "Network is going down now" message.

Two items:

I can get the CTC's recoupled no problem.

but: the "ifdown" and "ifup" commands are unknown on my SuSE 2.4.7 system.
Where might I find them?

also: I agree vlan's would be best. But if you don't have z/VM 4.3 yet,
what can you do? We're in the process of installing, but it is unlikely
we'll have it in production before February at earliest. (The boss decided
it would be good experience for our new junior systems programmer to do 4.3
as his first install and everything is taking twice as long -- or more!)
There are ptfs for vlans in 4.2, but those ptfs don't include the code for
IP broadcast. Until we get 4.3 up we have to have an interim solution to
this problem.

Re: Reconnect TCPIP

2002-10-18 Thread Sivey,Lonny
Gordon,

You should only need to restart the ctc0 interface. Logon to the Linux
system console and:

ifdown ctc0
ifup ctc0

You may want to consider connecting your Linux servers to the VM TCPIP stack
with VLANs instead using the HSI interface. If you do that, you won't have
to restart anything when the VM TCPIP stack is restarted. There are a
couple PTFs you may need for z/VM 4.2 to get it to work.

Gordon,
I don't have z/VM and Linux/390 running yet, but why wouldn't doing an
IFDOWN and IFUP on the TCP/IP interface work? That works OK on my Linux/390
running under Hercules on Linux/Intel at home.

There are only 2 reasons to reboot a linux: changing the number of
processors or changing your abount of memory. Everything else could be
done without reboot. It is a linux.
In worst case you need to shutdown all ctc-interfaces on that box, remove
the ctc module, reload it and start the interfaces up again.

You see, CTCs are not very reliable. The best virtual network interfaces
at the moment are GuestLans.
The reason for this is, they only "couple" to the interface and not to the
guest at the other side of the interface. For this reason, if a guest
dies, it doesn't matter to the others, except it stays down longer than
the tcp timeout.

And at all I claim there are no reasons to route a linux guest through the
VM TCPIP. ;-)

Oliver Paukstadt

Re: Reconnect TCPIP

2002-10-18 Thread Nix, Robert P.
This question *really* surprised me, because I didn't even consider it a problem when
we started up.

I added an exec call in the TCPIP profile to "LINCOUP", and on the TCPMAINT 198 disk,
I created "LINCOUP EXEC". In it, I have the Couple pairs needed to reconnect all the
Linux images.

While none of our images are under a severe load (we're just trying the waters, after
all), this hasn't failed to work yet, and we've bounced TCPIP several times without
incident or extreme interruption. (Sessions lost, sure. But the Linux images seem none
the worse for wear once TCPIP is back up.)

Our problem has been the other way 'round. Randomly, when we bounce a Linux image,
TCPIP fails to recognize its return, and we have to send an OBEYFILE to restart the
line.

Gordon, I would think you would need to restart ALL the services that IP
uses on EACH LINUX Image !! that could be a real pain to keep track of, or
maybe you could restart ALL of the services !!!
I do that on my desktop, but it runs Hercules & Sles7/390 A auto script
that could be fired off from a session would be good, considering IF IP
services take a hit you may not have Telnet like connectivity !!... let us
