I use VI to edit most configs and such, just to keep my hands dirty. But
for any REAL editing I always use THE.

Sure would be nice if you could convince the powers that Regina and THE
belong on the "main" binary DVD. At least in the z world.

This recently came up here at SHARE. Regina is included on the SDK for SLES9

Re: Regina and/of THE (The Hessling Editor) install?

2008-08-14 Thread Scott Rohling
Concerning the original post -- I've used Regina REXX on zLinux and continue
to do so on both zSeries and my x86 servers at home. It initially came with
the SUSE distro as an addon package when I used (SLES7, 8?) it.

Using REXX (25 years experience is hard to toss out the window) helped me
automate on Linux immediately with little learning curve. For example - I
recall a nifty program that looked at all your DASD on zLinux and gave a
report on how it was being used (virtual address is dasdx, mounted as x,
part of LVM x, not used, etc). Being new to Linux this would have taken 10
times longer than it did otherwise (though admittedly, I would have learned
a ton along the way).

Now I'm familiar with bash, perl, python, php, et al - and tend to use them
for simple tasks. But I still run home to Mama Rexx when I'm doing
something less than simple. REXX is just too cool to abandon..

Anyway - not sure I did anything here but confirm REXX can and is used on
Linux on z. It seems to be missing from the current distros I've looked at
for z, though :-(

Cowlishaw hero worshiper and fan club member: Scott Rohling

p.s. I've used THE - but after being forced to edit where THE isn't
available - I've tended to stick with vi/vim for an editor. Now that I know
the keystroke contortions, it's not as bad as it once seemed.

The version of checkinstall that I've used does install into the "live" file
system, and then creates a package from that. So, you might want to verify
that it does (or does not) do that on a test system before doing it on a more
important system.

I've used it on Slackware to build .tgz binary packages. It does what is
needed in that environment, but I've never tried to use it on an RPM-based

Re: Regina and/of THE (The Hessling Editor) install?

2008-08-12 Thread Mauro Souza
Regarding checkinstall, I used it for years, and it saves a lot of work.

Install it, and use it to create a RPM package.
Do the normal way to extract, configure and make the sourcecode, then use
checkinstall to create the rpm:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp/whatever-source-dir# ./configure && make && checkinstall
make install

This will create a RPM file somewhere (checkinstall will say where the file
is, usually somewhere under /usr/src/RPMS). So you can go there and issue
the rpm -Uvh command.

Mark,

I just read in the Sept Linux journal (p94) there is a tool called
checkinstall - the Tech Tip starts "If the program you want to install
doesnt have a package for your distro, you can use checkinstall to make
one." See http://asic-linux.com.mx/~izto/checkinstall/

I've never tried it, but it might be worth looking into ...

And what about THE which is strictly source and not and RPM. There is no
SPEC file for it.

I'll ask - at which point in my steps do you do the rpmbuild? Does it
replace the ./configure, make, make install?

I'll be a little more forceful than Neale was. Do not, under any
circumstances, do this on a system that is maintained via RPM. You'll be
laying landmines for yourself, or your successor, and your co-workers to step
on at some point in the future. You might get away with it for some period of
time, but it is definitely considered a bad practice. Use the package
management tool that came with your distribution, whether that is RPM, APT, or
whatever.

Or just cd /usr/src/packages/SPECS and rpmbuild -bb .spec

That way you get an RPM you can install and keep track of. (This assumes
there's no special platform specific processing required.)

I went to the Regina site and downloaded the source RPM -
Regina-REXX-3.4-1.src.rpm Use RPM to install the source rpm -Evh
Regina-REXX-3.4-1.src.rpm This will create
/usr/src/packages/SOURCES/Regina-REXX-3.4.tar.gz
cd to that directory
tar -xzf Regina-REXX-3.4.tar.gz - this will create
/usr/src/packages/SOURCES/Regina-3.4 - this is the source directory cd
to that directory ./configure make make install

For rexx - download THE-3.3B3.tar.gz
>From /usr/src/packages/SOURCES untar THE-3.3B3.tar.gz this will create
/usr/src/packages/SOURCES/THE-3.3B3

I've built both of them for Slack/390, but not for SLES. What that means is
that I don't have an RPM .spec file to share. But, openSUSE has source RPMs
you could try.
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/11.0/standard/src/regina-3.3-112.1.src.rpm
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/11.0/standard/src/the-3.1-359.1.src.rpm

Download them, then do an "rpm -ivh" on them. Then, cd to
/usr/src/packages/SPECS, and one at a time (regina first?) do "rpmbuild -bb
packagename.spec" matching "packagename" to the .spec file you find there. Let
me know how it goes.

Has anyone installed either of these products on z/Linux (SUSE)? If so,
can you provide some detailed instructions to do so? I am assuming that
I will have to install from source and have not done that before.
