SUSE Linux for 390

2005-10-19 Thread Kreiter, Chuck
Is there a freely available (without support) version of SUSE Linux for
390? My company would like to evaluate it and then decide whether we
want to run a supported production Linux image.

Thanks,

We got a 6 mos trial version from them back about year or so. If they have
one of those still available wouldn't that do it?

You can download the code right from the SuSE web site. I don't have a
URL handy for the correct page, but navigate around through the
downloads area, it will be there.

The Novel Web Site gives you 60 days for free evaluation that can be extended.
I actually don't think there is any software checking. We bought
support during the period and we never had to change anything from the
original install.

Even better is http://www.novell.com/linux/ibm/ You get CDs mailed to

What ends is your ability to pull maintenance from portal.

Makes a decent case for Debian s/390 and good old

apt-get update && apt-get upgrade.

If and only if ISV certifications are not an issue, and they usually
are. Plus, while I know the gang at SNA does a good job of providing
commercial support for Debian/390, a lot of PHBs are not going to be
willing to use them because they don't have thousands of employees all
over the world. Another reason why PHBs stink, but unfortunately
they're a fact of life.

Not that I have a problem with commercial Linux vendors... I don't, nor do
I have a problem with anyone making a living from open source support.
The roots (no pun intended) of the community are still in effect in the
form of a system that anyone CAN use, gratis, with open source and open
documentation, and that is what matters.
