Re: linux distributions for s/390
A very good idea is to plan to try the free versions of all the distributions before committing to buying one. They are all technically similar, so the choice may come down to which distribution 'feels' right for you and your shop. If you are going to be building a lot of Linux/390 servers, the distribution that you find easiest to install and/or clone is the best one. > -Original Message- > From: Alex Leyva [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Thursday, August 15, 2002 2:10 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: linux distributions for s/390 > > Hi, > > We are planning a migration from a Multiprise 2003-225 with os/390 2.6 to > a z800 with linux, actually we dont know what distribution we will use, i > dont want to initiate a long discussion, i only want to hear some > opinions, also, i know there is Debian, Red Hat, Suse, Turbo Linux, and > sles, but i dont know what is sles. > > Thanks. > > -- > Alejandro Leyva Rabinovich. > Jefe de la Unidad Departamental de Soporte Tècnico > (Administraciòn de Mainframe). > Secretaria de Finanzas. > Gobierno del Distrito Federal.

I have same machine (2003-225) running VM/ESA 2.4.0 with Linux/390 No problems at all. We use Suse distribuition. -- Carlos Alberto Bodra Becher VM/VSE System Consultant Sco Paulo - SP - Brasil
Re: linux distributions for s/390
Hi Alex, also to consider is do you require a 32bit (s390) or 64bit (s390x) Linux? Your machine is a z800 which allows 64bit. There are several 32bit distributions, but most of the 64bit come only with a support contract of some kind. Many of the 32bit free distributions will require more work on your part in order to keep them current (for examples of pain and confusion check this forum!) If cost is not a "big" issue and you want a simple installation then SuSE SLES7 is a very good 64bit supported solution. Depending upon how long it will be before you actually do the install (months?) then you may be heading for SLES8. Redhat can do the same, but their handling of IBM's OCO modules (OSA) "was" a little different last time I tried in May/June. This means a more complicated setup for the installation than SuSE (Maybe others can comment on the latest Redhat 64bit releases?) Another important issue is what application solutions you intend to run on Linux? If these are from a third party (not in-house) then I would also seek advice from those vendors. If they develop and test primarily on one or two distributions then listen to their advice. All Linux's distributions should be equal, but my experience is that they are not.
