Subject: microcode Level for OS/390 Linux

I have found out that our 9672 processor is actually a G4 class. Does
anyone have any info on microcode levels for a G4? The only thing in the
pre-install manual is pertinent to G4/G5 and the Multiprise 3000 series.

I need to know what the right microcode level is for a 9672 (G5) processor
to run Turbo-Linux .

I found out the level required for the SuSE distribution is MCL025 EC
99918.

It would be greatly appreciated if anyone knowledgiable in this area can
confirm the same for Turbo-Linux or advise me on which would be the
appropriate level. Thank You in advance. Greg Evans

Greg,

Three things, the first being admittedly pedantic and nit-picking. There is
no such thing as OS/390 Linux. OS/390 and Linux have nothing to do with
each other, except they're both operating systems that run on IBM
mainframes. IBM marketing folks like to call it Linux for S/390 and
zSeries, depending on what hardware you're running. Most people around here
call it Linux/390, zLinux, etc. No real big deal, but it avoids some
confusion.

Second, Turbolinux has pretty much vanished from the Linux landscape. From
what I was told at the VM/VSE tech conference last week, SuSE will be
picking up support of existing Turbolinux customers (since Turbo was part of
the United Linux group, and SuSE still is), but I don't think anyone should
be seriously thinking about creating new instances of Turbolinux. The
remaining distributions still give you a serious choice to make, so
concentrate on those.

Third, all Linux/390 distributions should run on any G5 system. The minimum
level is really a G2 that has the "Halfword Immediate and Relative Branch
Feature."
