Re: old wreck
Okay...the harddisk burned out, yet it still loads DOS and a graphic shell? Isn't dosshell the one that DOS 5.00 and later included? I suggest starting with at boot disk, and if that works move on to a hard drive install, or a boot loader (I had trouble with a 8086 PS/2, so testing off of floppy first might be wise). Good luck. old wreck
Hi. I've got this old IBM wreck (it's actually a 386 sx, PS/1 type thingy) in my closet. It hasn't been of much use the last couple of years, because the harddisk burned out. I't still got a diskdrive, so I thought i't would be fun trying out elks. Problem is, the computer loads some sort of graphic shell when I try to boot. It runs on top of some sort of (ibm) DOS. My question is if you can load elks from DOS, in the same way that you can load linux with loadlin? Regards, Christian Theil Have.

Error
Hey all, I'v just recently gotten into ELKS and I have installed it on my 8088. I use 360k disks to boot it and it seems to work well, except for an error that screwes things up. I don't know exactly what it says because it scrools off the screen too quicly, but it has something to do with Inodes and normally happens whenever I try to run a program or use 'ls' to list a directory. Now, I *could* nuke the DOS system thats on the 30mb HD and use that for my boot/root disk, but I'd rather not. Really, my questions are: 1) Anyone else have this problem? 2) Is there a fix for it? Also, when it does this, the program I'm running (normally 'ls) locks up and can't be kill'ed, thus, the program stays in memory and after afew of these screw-ups ELKS crashes due to not having any more user memory. Well, hope someone can help me. - Jesse P.S. Computer Specs: 8088/4 (2Mhz threwput), 640k ram, 30mb Seagate RLL HD, One 5 1/4" 360k FD
Re: RE: Toshiba T1x00
You'll need to go to this site and boot dos to run the setup utilities http://computers.toshiba.com/tais/csd/support/files/dosutil.htm PWRSAV.ZIP This will allow you to adjust and turn off the power save settings. TOSHUTIL.EXE This is the setup utility which will allow you to adjust all of the settings. Hope this helps. >From: Greg Haerr <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Date: Wed, Feb 23 2000 6:14:17 PM (USA Eastern) >To: MagerValp <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, linux-8086 developers list ><[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Subject: RE: Toshiba T1x00 >:Hacking. :Hacking. I have a Swedish/Finnish keymap if you're interested. I've :been meaning to share for a while, but it's on a machine I can't get :to at the moment. I haven't verified that it works on anything but my :T1200 though. FWIW, I'm still looking for technical data on how the T1200 power manangement gets disabled. I tried booting ELKS on my trusty old T1200 and it worked until the "power manangement" kicked in - and turned off the power! Greg

Hi all elks hackers. I am one of you hackers, and I also develop on elks (look at netboot in elks, etc) But we should never forget the aim of elks ! I am really a linux fan and also hack on linux and so there is a simple rule for me: All computers should run Linux, except for them, which are not able to (< 386). And when I cannot use Linux, then the next best: E L K S ! But I cannot imagine to use elks on a 386 or greater board. On >=386 boards I would collect tools for a mini Linux running on 4MB and so on, but in this case Linux not Elks. Nethertheless, I like Elks, really. And I also will go on elks hacking.. greetings Christoph P.
toshiba laptop
