TT-Budget S-1401, running with an up-to-date Debian Etch (2.6.18-4),
fresh checkout of v4l-dvb from Mercurial, with the above patch applied.

Looks OK so far. The few BERs that I was getting seem to be gone. I'll
leave it running over the weekend and report again early next week.

Have you tried using the -x option? tzap tunes and then exits.
However, I think you have to load the dvb-core module with
dvb_shutdown_timeout set to 0, otherwise the signal is lost again.

A count (as well as the human-readable option you asked for the other
day) already exists in femon - perhaps you could do a 'tzap -x',
followed by an 'femon -h -C ...'?

They are both separate programs, but the data they report comes from the
same source.

tzap behaves just like any other *nix utility with regards to return
values, so something like this should work:

if 'tzap -x ...'
then
# Tuning successful - monitor signal strength
femon -h -c ...
else
# Tuning failed...

Their website appears to be offline at the moment (perhaps not a great
sign!), but we bought some TechnoTrend S-1401 DVB-S cards from Intellect
Systems (http://www.intellectsystems.co.uk/), and didn't have any
problems with service or delivery. The cards have been supported for a
while now.

A driver for the S-1401 was written about 12-18 months ago. I haven't
tried it for some time, and I'm not sure of the exact status - there
were a few discussions last year on the mailing list to do with tweaks
to the signal strength, etc. - but last time I did use it it was very
stable and did what I wanted it to do.

If you search the archives for S-1401 or TDA10086 (the tuner chip), you
should find out plenty of information.

We chose the card primarily because it was low-profile, but I think it
is a fair bit cheaper than the 1500. The project ended up using Windows
rather than Linux, but as far as I know, the cards themselves have been
very reliable.

[linux-dvb] dvbtools vs. dvb-apps?

2006-09-04 Thread Chris Malarky
Hi,

Is there an equivalent to this command:

# dvbtune -f 11473000 -p V -s 33300 -n 110

using just the programs available in dvb-apps?

The stream I'm tuning in to is a multicast network stream rather than an
audio/video stream, and doesn't show up in the initial results from
scan, but does appear when running dvbtraffic.

If I want to use (s)zap then I need the PID to show up in my
channels.conf, right?

(I've attached my initial scan data and dvbtraffic output.)

Cheers,

[linux-dvb] [PATCH] Add count option to femon

2006-10-21 Thread Chris Malarky
Hi,

I've attached a simple patch which gives the option to stop femon after
after a number of samples, rather than it running indefinitely.

I need to be able to monitor the FE, and this seems cleaner (and
hopefully more useful) than just hacking femon to output what I want.

Sorry, I haven't had the time to chase this one up, but I haven't had a
peep out of my T-1500 since I tried using dvbtune instead of the
dvb-apps tools.

I had no luck at all with dvbtune, and now I can't get a picture out of
it.

The behaviour is very strange - doing all the things that used to work
perfectly - scan gives me all the channels I would expect, tzap gets a
lock, and dvbtraffic is reporting a plausible amount of data. But when
I try and capture the output with dvbstream I get nothing.

I suspect that I am doing something Very Stupid, so will probably rip it
all apart and try again :-/

My DVB-S test machine uses szap/dvbnet to receive data, and it's been up
for 16 days and still going strong (without any re-tuning). IIRC dvbnet
is the stock Debian Etch package, and szap and friends were latest
dvb-apps from the repository.

I haven't used dvbtune on this particular box, but I have used it with
the same card (TT S-1401) with similar results.

Could it be your DVB driver that is unstable?
