Thx a lot. I set server-name and now it works :-)

Alpha now netbooting into FAI

2004-09-03 Thread Steffen Grunewald
Hi,

this is to notify you that I eventually succeeded - I got an Alpha
Compaq XP1000 to boot into FAI sysinfo using a home-built kernel.
I had to create an initrd (although I'm not referring to it later)
because without one the SRM console would barf.
I don't fully understand what happened, but at least I've got something
to play around with next week.
Thanks to Steve Langasek who pointed me to several small but helpful
things.
Thomas: as soon as I sorted things out I'll publish a 0th version of a
FAI-on-Alpha HOWTO. I'll get back to you for some details of the probing
procedure though.

Have a nice weekend,
 Steffen

Yes.

This one?
server-name "faiserver";

That could be possible, since I forgot to set it, AFAIR. I'm gonna try
this these days.

thx.

so you would still be able to switch to tty2...

IIRC by the server-name setting of your dhcpd

On the screen :-)
The logfiles are only on the machine itself, which is not bootable at
the momemt.

Exactly. But where is $SERVER defined?

Not in my case. I've used my notebook as a FAI-server and connected the
client with a patch-cable, directly :-)

For sending the log, the variable LOGSERVER is used. When it's not
set, $SERVER is used.
