[Linux-HA] Antw: Re: Q: ping (ocf:pacemaker:ping) from specific address?

2014-09-08 Thread Ulrich Windl
Hi!

After option=-I addr did not work I had a look into the RA: It's a big
mess!

---
ping_update() {

if have_binary fping; then
fping_check
active=$?
else
ping_check
active=$?
fi
[...]
---

So if the system has an fping (mine has!), the RA uses fping; otherwise it
uses ping.
Also, $OCF_RESKEY_options is only used for ping, but not for fping!
Needless to say that thje options of ping and fping cannot be compared.
Welcome to the mess!

At the very least the documentation should be updated!

Regards,
Ulrich

 Hi!

I'm using ocf:pacemaker:ping to ping some specific address. The requirement

is that a specific source address (that is on a local interface) is being
used to ping a destination. So if the resource moves between nodes, the same

 source address shall be used.

The address to use is a secondary adress on interface bond0, like
bond0:xyz.
I can spacify -I bond0 and -I bond0:xyz, but the latter seems to be
ignores, as if I just said -I bond0. Ping is from
iputils-ss021109-292.28.1
 (SLES11 SP3).

I had this requirement for HP-UX years ago, and the solution was to install
a
special local ping that allowed to select the source address.

 So my preferences are:
 1) Get it done with the software I have

 ping -w 2 -c 3 -I 127.0.0.1 8.8.8.8
   ping: sendmsg: Invalid argument
   ping: sendmsg: Invalid argument
   PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8) from 127.0.0.1 : 56(84) bytes of data.

   --- 8.8.8.8 ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 1008ms

 ping -w 2 -c 3 -I 10.11.12.13 8.8.8.8
   bind: Cannot assign requested address

 ping -w 2 -c 3 -I 10.43.9.55 8.8.8.8
   PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8) from 10.43.9.55 : 56(84) bytes of data.
   64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=1 ttl=41 time=27.4 ms
   64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=2 ttl=41 time=27.4 ms

   --- 8.8.8.8 ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 2 received, 0% packet loss, time 1000ms
   rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 27.405/27.430/27.456/0.167 ms

 Does that help?

[Linux-HA] Q: dampening explained?

2014-09-08 Thread Ulrich Windl
Hi!

I remember having asked this before, but I'l still missing a good explanation:

What are the precise semantics of dampening (attrd_updater -d)?

The manual page just says:
   -d, --delay=value
The time to wait (dampening) in seconds further changes occur

Who is waiting? What changes?

Please explain!

Ulrich

[Linux-HA] [RFC] Organizing HA Summit 2015

2014-09-08 Thread Fabio M. Di Nitto
All,

it's been almost 6 years since we had a face to face meeting for all
developers and vendors involved in Linux HA.

I'd like to try and organize a new event and piggy-back with DevConf in
Brno [1].

DevConf will start Friday the 6th of Feb 2015 in Red Hat Brno offices.

My suggestion would be to have a 2 days dedicated HA summit the 4th and
the 5th of February.

The goal for this meeting is to, beside to get to know each other and
all social aspect of those events, tune the directions of the various HA
projects and explore common areas of improvements.

I am also very open to the idea of extending to 3 days, 1 one dedicated
to customers/users and 2 dedicated to developers, by starting the 3rd.

Thoughts?

Fabio

PS Please hit reply all or include me in CC just to make sure I'll see
an answer :)

I think this is a good idea. 3 days may be a good idea, as well.

I think I would be more useful trying to bring the user's perspective
more so than a developer's. So on that, I would like to propose a
discussion on merging some of the disparate lists, channels, sites, etc.
to help simplify life for new users looking for help from or to wanting
to join the HA community.

I also understand that Fabio will buy the first round of drinks. :)

Re: [Linux-HA] Q: dampening explained?

2014-09-08 Thread Alan Robertson
As an example, if you're pinging two nodes, and both go away, they
almost certainly won't go appear to go away at the exactly same time -
because of the timing of when the pings occurred. In addition other
machines have similar issues and are even more decoupled from each
other. So, in effect it may take a while for things to settle down
into the final state.

What you don't want to do is start to move resources, then discover that
they didn't need to move at all, or that you're moving them to the wrong
place -- when if you'd just waited a little bit for the dust to settle
you would have done something much more efficiently - or perhaps nothing
at all.
