Does anybody know if the Epson 880 works with RH 7.0, and Kernel
2.2.16-22 .
I was unable to find any 860's anywhere. Has anybody been able to get
this printer to work?

Well, naturally no one responded. However, for posterity (and the Deja
news archives), I discovered my problem on my own.

My computer had ACPI enabled. I haven't really looked into the issue,
but apparently Linux (RH6.0 -- NOT 6.1 as I thought) doesn't recognize
ACPI, and thus flags the interrupt it was using as available -- in my
case IRQ 9. Now, why all my attempts to point the wavelan card at a
different IRQ failed, I have no idea. Whatever the case, disabling ACPI
totally solved my problem. Now I'm happily using my Linux box to route
my local wired network, my wireless network and the internet. Glory be

I spent a week trying to get the same chip to work with a 2.2.16 kernel before I
gave up and upgraded to 2.4. The driver for the VIA Technologies VT82C686
Apollo Super AC97 multimedia audio controller was rewritten somtime between
2.2.16 and 2.4 and works just fine in 2.4

Thanks for your suggestions ... I tried them all but I still seem to have
the same problem ... the drivers install fine, modules load fine, but I
cannot hear anything ... very strange ... i'm wondering if maybe it's a
problem with my PCI bus or something? I've done 'cat /proc/pci' and I
get:

  Bus 0, device 8, function 0:
Multimedia audio controller: Unknown vendor Unknown device (rev 254).
  Vendor id=12eb. Device id=2.
Medium devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. IRQ 11. Master Capable.
Latency=64.  Min Gnt=4.Max Lat=12.
  Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xec00 [0xec00].
  I/O at 0xc800 [0xc801].
  I/O at 0xcc00 [0xcc01].

Can anybody who has a an Aureal Vortex 2 tell me if this looks ok? Is
there a way to tell the au8830.o module specifically what are the I/O
addresses or IRQ of the sound card?

Thanks!

Hi masters!

Does anyone here knows how to install RH6.1, on a ATA66 harddisk
using a (duh!) PCChips M747 mother board (I think it uses SiS 5598
chipset). Even if I creat a 1MB partition the installer says "/boot

I have not luck getting a Soundblaster 16 PCI to work on a new
installation of Linux-Mandrake (7.1). Am I missing something, or is this
card simply not Linux compatible? If it is compatible, could someone
please tell me wher I find a driver?

Many thanks,

My 486 machine is almost certainly older, and it has a Soyo motherboard
and was fitted with an Award BIOS. It would cope with 8.4Gb (in LBA
mode) and just ignore the rest of the drive, but I had no problem
booting from it, and Linux was quite happy to use the rest of the drive.

However, I eventually found a BIOS upgrade (MR Bios) from
www.unicore.com (I actually used www.tssc.de but they don't seem to sell
the BIOS upgrades anymore) which means my machine is now perfectly happy
with any practical size of HD.

Subject: hpt366 on intel 440fx chipset
Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2000 07:19:41 GMT

Hi
I have installed HotRod66 controller on two different mainboards (PPro
200 on AUSUS P/I-P6NP5 board and IBM DeskStar 15G disk and PPro 180 on
intel VS440FX with Seagate Barracuda 15G). The both mainboards share the
same intel chipset 440FX. I used patched kernel 2.2.17 for AUSUS
P/I-P6NP5 and
2.4.0-pre6 (from RH7 distribution) for intel VS440FX. On both computers
the hpt366 works well under w95osr2. Under linux, however, the
controller is detected, disks are recognized properly but system hangs
at random places during bootup.
Specifying kernel parameters
idebus=30 ide2=noautotune
(for PPro 3x60MHz and intel mainboard)
the controller correctly boots up in pio0 mode (I suppose = performance
is 1.35MB/s). Under pio4 mode (switched using hdparm -p4 /dev/hde)
system works, but with worse performance than with ordinary ide0
controller (2.31 vs. 3.18 MB/s).
Enabling dma (hdparm -d1 -X34 /dev/hde) cause error
ide-dmaproc: chipset supported
ide_dma_timeout func only:14
and the system hang.
Any comments, please
Cyril F.

The BIOS on the card will install itself when you boot the system.

> I was able to download the bios from Promise for Linux for the ultra66

The BIOS you down loaded is an upgrade for the flash BIOS on the Promise
card. AFAIK you don't need this for any reason, unless you know of a
specific one.

You aren't going to do this.

>
> Anyway I'm clueless any help would be appreciated.

To start the system in DMA 33 mode (or less) follow the directions in the
Ultra-DMA HOWTO -- section 5.1.

Then you need to build a Kernel v. 2.2.26 with the ide patch applied.
Remember to use the global parameter "linear" in you "lilo.conf" file.

It is my understanding that you do not have a HD with anything installed
on it in your system. Therefore, you will need to start an installation,
get to a console, get the numbers and enter them some how. With RedHat,
you would enter at the "Boot:" prompt:

linux ide2=0x,

with the numbers you obtained from:

cat /proc/pci

Read the HOWTO and then ask more questions.
