Yup. Mesa is nice and complete, but it's not fast. Like X itself,
it's designed so that it can be used over a network. Thus it wastes time
acting like there was a network separating your GL-using program and you X
server. What you want is the appropriate GLX module. GLX runs much faster,
since it lets the GL-using program draw graphics directly.

What version of X are you using?

Subject: How to setup 3c905c in Debian ?
Date: 25 Jan 2001 05:27:01 GMT

Thanks to the nn, I got the mouse problem fixed, but then I had problem
on setting up the network. I installed the 3c905c and downloaded the
driver from 3com site and according to the instructions:

Compile the loadable kernel
config the modules.conf (it was not updated in the readme)
insmod
reboot

But the insmod reportes Unresolved symbolic references.

Any hints ?

Further, I believed the Linux developed so far should be able to detect
most hardware and help the admin to config the hardware a lot. But I found
my perception is quite wrong.

And, is the Debian very troublesome distribution ? I browsed through
several Linux sites, and believed that the Debian is not as easy install
as Red hat but should be good for professional (not in Linux but in
Unix). But I found that the installation/configuration process for Debian
is really troublesome. Its difficult to look for the info you needed
from the CD-ROM and sites and also the dselect and dpkg are very trouble
to use.

Should I switch to other package like Red-hat ? Or all the distribution
suffer from more or less the similar problem ?

Because the ISA modem contains a processor for decoding and encoding analog
signal. A PCI modem uses software to use CPU to decoding and encoding. The
software is cheaper that the hardware, but the hardware modem puts less work
on the system, so that you get better CPU performance.

Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2001 02:59:10 GMT

Hi,

I just compiled the 2.4 kernel under Mandrake 7.2...

Everything worked great (I thought)... No error messages or anything when
compiling...

On booting, however, with the new 2.4 kernel I noticed that eth0 failed,
which suggests that my network card was incorrectly selected when I set up
the new kernel.

My question is, which card should I select, that supports the SMC 1211, when
setting this kernel up?

Thank you for any help... =)

It either may say "false" instead of "true", or it may not exist.
Change it to "true", or create it.

Then, as root, execute the command "alsactl restore".

I need an isa modem for my freesco router. 56 k modem. I found a Modem
Blaster 56 k on mwave.com. Will a modem blaster work w/ minor setup
problems or tweaking? What isa modem do you suggest? I would get an
external but it is on a 386 and the freesco site said that internal is
better with the old compters because they had slow comm ports.

I know this issue comes up a lot, so I just wanted
to report that http://www.mwave.com is
selling these http://www.archtek.com/pcv.html
for $38 USD and the one I got works great connecting
to several different sites. The chipset is
made by 'Topic'.

Please note that the "support" in the package for Linux
is useless (no documentation and a libc5 binary of
unknown purpose). What needs to be done under linux
is to look in /proc/pci for the assigned interrupt and
port of the card and then configure your startup
appropriately (e.g. /etc/serial.conf entry on Debian),
or use 'setserial' dynamically yourself.

Anyway, bottom line is that there is at least one
cheap, competent, PCI hardware modem out there.

I'm afraid that it's not !
when I do "modprobe snd-card-cs461x" it gives me "device busy or not
found" error !
also, when I do "cat /proc/modules" or "lsmod" it lists all the sound
modules loaded succefully but "not used" !!!
I think I should use "amixer" to unmute the sound.
anyway..any other ideas??

Thanks for all the advice. I am seriously considering just re-installing on
the 4.3Gb drive.

The problem is that new software gets installed to /usr (as far as I can
tell) as well as many updates. If I cannot easily increase the /usr storage
with this added on drive, then a re-install is better. I could just
migrate the entire thing to the new drive (as described in the HD upgrade
HowTo), but I don't see that as any faster. I cannot make a backup (no tape
or CD burner attached).

I think I'll just save a few of my setting files to floppy ( .conf files
...) and a copy of a recent dmesg output so I know what I need to "aim" for
if I have a problem re-installing.

Thanks again,
Marcell

They are gzip, so gunzip should have worked if the files had been transfered as
is by your browser. However, it's likely that your browser has already
decompressed these files, so just rename them to wacom_drv.o

That said, why do you have both? If you are running XFree86 3.3.6 you should
use xf86Wacom.so and for 4.0.x you should use wacom_drv.o.

Also note that the drivers are distributed with the basic XFree86 4.0.x
distros, so unless you need to upgrade (the alpha 21 is more recent than 4.0.2
for example and fixes a bug in XF86Config-4 parsing among others) you should
already have the drivers on your system. I'm not so sure about 3.3.6.

Subject: Promise ultra66 & SMP
Date: Wed, 24 Jan 2001 18:27:51 +

I recently installed a WDCaviar 20gig UDMA100 drive along with a Promise
Ultra66 controller and cable. Mandrake 7.2 saw the controller on a
fresh install and booted up in single processor mode - tho I have two
Pentium Pro 200mhz chips installed. No problem. I compiled a 2.4.0
kernel for SMP and rebooted - everything fine.

Exceptalthough I get a full and glorious 15mb per sec I/O when the
original installed 2.2.x kernel is running ONE processor, it drops
dramatically to about 8mb per sec when booted in dual processor mode on
the 2.4.0 kernel! Why is this? Here is my kernel configuration in
2.4.0. I don't know how to extract the configuration information for
the 2.2.x kernel installed by Mandrake 7.2.

Any light on this mystery greatly appreciatedk!

It`s an SMP system. The first one I`ve worked with, that`s why I'm
curious about these 'new' messages that I've never seen.

Hi,

i have a asus a7v also with Thunderbird 1.1 GHz, IIBM 45GB UDMA100 HD
connected to the promise-controller. I installed RH7.0 with the
ide-parameter-trick mentioned on the above website and afterwards compiled
kernel-2.4.0 with promise-support.

The difference between your and my system is that i´m booting from a hd
connected to the normal VIA-IDE. Thats why i am not using the
ide-parameters in the append-line.

So my UDMA100-hd is hde and is working without problems with the following
hdparm-parameters:

-X69 -m16 -d1

More than likely if your sound card is supported within linux then
your joystick will also be supported but you may have to upgrade your
kernel or recompile it with the joystick support.

Hi,

We (my research group) are looking to invest in a small scale, parallel
architecture in order to run a parallel C compiler
which supports OpenMP such as the portland group compiler. We will be
running Linux on this box as we are UNIX based and
have the greatest experience in Linux and Solaris. We are not over
concerned with getting the best performance as this system will be used
for code experimentation. The task of spec'ing the machine has fallen
to me. I have checked out
what the bigger players have to offer and there seems to be quite a few
offering Quad Xeon II or III units. If I understand
correct a 2.2.xx Linux kernel with SMP support should have no problems
running reasonably efficiently on such as box (?)

What I would like are any `pearls of wisdom' from people who have done
this kind of thing before.  In particular;
What are the problems we are likely to encounter?
Are there any hardware configurations which people have found
stable/unstable?
What benefits would we get from a Xeon III system over a II or could
we simply project expected performance improvments based on a cheaper II
system?
Is a Xeon quad unit a sensible choice for a testbed of our software -
numerically intensive medical image analsis?

Many thanks for any help.

Hello.
You have solutions on: http://www.geocities.com/ender7007/index.html
Install 2.2.18 plus ide-patch from Hedrick linux-ide.org, make new kernel
and You have boot with promise100. On my computer ( ASUS A7V address
is ide2=0x9800,0x9402, You must find address on Alt F2 , cat /proc/pci )

Work , boot with 2.2.18 + ide-patch ( Promise 20265 ) .

Just so everyone knows, the 686b started appearing on motherboards in
the last _few weeks_. It's _brand_ new. So direct comparisons between the
vt686 and the vt686b are irrelevant.

I have removed /dev/lp0  and made a link /dev/hdc -> /dev/fd0  (if hdc is
your LS-120). With this i can use the mtools for the LS-120.
