I just bought an IBM 61G deskstar DTLA 307060. Then I learned that you
can't run an ATA100/66 drive on an ATA33 controller. darn.

Incorrect. ATA100/66 drives will run on ATA33 controllers with ATA33
controller performance.

I've migrated several systems by booting a minimal system on the new box
and using dd to copy the paritions. Minimal requirement is similar
disks (eg- ATA33 or better, equal size or bigger). This is followed by
a kernel reconfigure/rebuild to sort the rest of the system. Key points
to get sorted before entering run level 5 are graphics and network
drivers. You don't want to damage a graphics card and/or monitor or
create a network problem.

In the above cases, 2 drives were used: minimal bootable install on
floppy, blank new drive 0, old drive 1. If you created the same
partition geometry on the new drive you could get everything over the
net (or backups) except boot block (see LILO HOWTO).

using Amanda (version 2.4.2). I'm sure I can restore to the new system
but how to know which files to restore and which to keep?

James,

Sounds like a routing problem. What program are you using to connect to the
net? Are you using something like kppp?

Once you've got your connection established, try looking at your routing table
to see if you have a default route going out to the net using "netstat -rn",
this should verify a) if you've established a PPP connection and b) whether or
not you have any default routing set up to use the PPP connection.

If everything above works well, and you do happen to have routing sorted out
ok, have you check making connections via IP addresses as opposed to machine
names? If not, give that a try, and if you find that you can ping external
machines via their IP address then all you will have to do is to enter the IP
address of the nameservers you ISP provides into your /etc/resolv.conf file.

Hope this helps a little,

L

I just installed Linux on a friends Packard Bell in

Unfortunately she is a bit limited at present by the lack
of a modem. The box has a PCI card based winmodem and I
can't seem to find a "linmodem" driver for it.

Anybody know if one is in development ?

Hello.
I'm trying to install a tape device on a
Red Hat 6.2 Linux Server. (kernel 2.2.12 Compaq's version)

When I boot I can see the DAT is being found,
but later on I read:

"No SCSI device's been found" or
"SCSI device's found=0"
(it is a SCSI DAT device..)

The Smart Array is working fine..

Server: Proliant DL 380
Tape device: Compaq DAT 12/24 GB

What have I missed?

Thanks for your time,

Daniel Hager

BTW
My problem is very like Cscmdot's, posted
in Compaq's Message Board as message nr. 73,
titled: "rh62 on dl380" under "Servers-Linux"

I'm sending you a copy of that one to..

I am having problems seeing my tape drive on a dl380
(dual 733 / 1 gb / 54 gb) system.
The smart array apperars to be happy with the hard drives,
but the /proc filesystem reports no scsi devices.
The tape drive reports as device 6 on the power up sequence.
The scsi chip is marked as sym53c1510. I have attemped rebuilding
the kernel several times, but still never seem to see the tape drive.

Any suggestions?

 Not necessarily.

physical memory, there is value in mapping smaller amounts of RAM to
 a 64- or 128-bit virtual address space.

Large sparse matrix algorithms become far easier to implement if you

Algorithms for sparse matrixes should make use of the sparseness and
by doing so the need of linear addressing is not really that big

it would take three and a half year to only traverse the memory under
the assumption that memory accesses are made at 128-bit width and

Depends on your application.

You may never have a need to completely traverse your sparse matrix. If

Are you sure that you need an imm driver? Is it a ZIP Plus drive? If not - use
ppa.

Is there no wqay that convection can be used to cool it?

Convection depends on density difference
between the heated fluid and the cool fluid.
That is what creates the pressure differential
necessary to make the fluid flow thru any
kind of resistance.

As the CPU heats the fluid (perhaps water) in the heatsink, it rises,
and flows up and out of the case in to a cooling reservoir. The same
reservoir provides the cool source for the intake to the heatsink.

The problem with water and most liquids
is that their density does not change very
much across normal temperature changes.

Although 100degrees is hot for a CPU, it is not too far out of spec, and
the latent energy in water when it boils will pretty much maintain that
 temperature.

True, but 100 C at the outer case is way
too hot for long term operation. Reliability
is going to take a big hit up there. As many
folks know, the CPU timing is degraded at
higher temperatures, so it would have to be
underclocked as well.

Otherwise, choose a fluid which has a lower booling point (alcohol)

Freon (or its modern CFC-free equivalent)
is a good choice, technically. Instead of
relying on convection, I would put in a wick
to make it work as a heat pipe does.

 ...;-).

 Could this convection method work?

Probably not with water. But alchohol
or refrigeration fluid might do the trick.
