My problem however is that right now my etc/inittab file has me going to only run level 3. if I change this value to 5, the systems takes me to a graphical logon..but with only one monitor. My guess is that the system is still strying to run startx as opposed to startx -- +xinerama. You may connect to it via an usb-port (I don't have one on my computer), or by the use of the serial line port (UART 16550). So I have to learn how to connect my linux-box to this external terminal. Is there anybody having some experience to this setup, or at least can give me hints where to find _explicit_ information how to handle isdn-terminals via the serial line? Data cd's will open and display fine but neither the root acct or my personal acct can access audio cd's... any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA Did you by any chance install automount ? It nukes the direct hardware access. Ie., your basic CD reading with xmms or other. Actually, it only mounts the cdrom for itself, and monitors it. As audio CDs are not a valid filesystem, it does nothing. But keeps the hadware, just in case a real CD appears. A nice toy, but the price is a bit high. Plu

I did a long search for similar problems, and found that it is a recurring problem for all i840 SuperMicro boards, not just in linux, but other o/s's as well. In particular, this one message occurs when logging does not die instantly: unexpected IRQ vector 217 on CPU#0! It can also occur on CPU#1, but the 217 is consistent in all cases. This message has been reported on both IDE-only machines, and SCSI machines. Failure occurs under either rapid i/o of many small files, or a few large files, or mount/umount, using any filesystem type or driver. I can repeat the problem via rapid mount/umount of the cdrom. The filesystem driver that originates the problem is the first to die, but even if, for example, the scsi is still alive, it will also die shortly thereafter (seconds to live)...sync is not possible, even with magic-sysrq. I have had linux-2.4.0-test5 OOPS on me with this board under the following circumstances: - using APIC - running fsck on my USB ZIP 250 (ext2 filesystem) I didn't get anything in the logs, but there was an "Aiiee!! Kernel Panic!" at line 614 (?) in sched.c that was dumped to the console, and something about an interrupt being removed?? I had thought that this was USB related, because the USB / SCSI subsystems seem a bit flaky, but then they ARE resting on a less-than-solid mobo foundation at the moment ... ;-) Chris Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy. It took about a month of mysterious crashes before I finally had the unexpected IRQ show up. Running with kernel option "noapic" has shown me that the AIC7xxx driver is extremely stable. The filesystem access itself is absurdly fast, although with noapic the machine becomes unresponsive during this heavy i/o. Even the dual PII450 here will far outperform the dual 800 for responsiveness (at least with noapic going on the 800). Both use AIC7xxx. I think you'll find your system will fail even when using IDE if you rapidly mount and umount. -- Date: Tue, 8 Aug 2000 12:02:52 +0800 From: "Kevin" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: How to configure X-server on Inter Chipset? When I tried to compile the kernel, a message ("CPU Clock skew") appeared. I checked the CPU and found out that it got too hot. That was why the kernel couldn't be compiled, I think. But how could the CPU get so hot when it wasn't used with the highest frequency possible ? ( it wasn't cooled, but I had removed this CPU from a PC where it was run with 66 MHz and there had also been no cooling on it ) I tried other jumper settings: CPU Clock 66 MHz, 1X, "Greater than 33 MHz" nothing worked. Then I tried CPU Clock 33.3 MHz, 2X, "Less than or equal to 33 MHz" ... Might the board be defect, how can I figure that out with linux ? I have figured out that the problem with the D-Link DFE-530TX device driver is that it doesn't properly handle multiple devices on the same IRQ. I am trying to patch the driver, but it is slow going (I am rusty in device drivers). I will try to contact the original author of the device driver also. The error I get is "SIOCSIFFLAG: resource is temporarily unavailable" when I do an ifconfig on the device. I know now what generates the error message (error return in installing interrupt service routine in the driver). I do not know how to handle multiple interrupt routines yet, though there are plenty of examples that work in my computer (my scsi device driver is on the IRQ and its source code explicitly talks about multiple interrupt service routines for multiple devices on the same IRQ).
