Ok, due to a misshipment I have available to me an internal DLT1 drive
from Dell. I want to put this in our Dell Poweredge 2400 streaming
media server (Real 7) running RedHat 6.2. According to the Redhat site
DLT1 drives only work under RedHat 7, but due to some issues with 7 we'd
rather not upgrade. Also, Real doesn't recommend going to the 2.4
kernel yet since it hasn't been tested.
So, finally to waht I'm after. Has anyone here gotten a DLT1 drive to
work under RedHat 6.2 and if so how did you go about doing it? Thanks

The newest versions of both RPM v3 and RPM v4 are forward AND backward
compatible.
In short, the recommended (and easiest) path is to upgrade to the latest RPM
v3.

I have a Quantum external SCSI hard drive that has failed on a
Sparc-Solaris 5.7 system. I came in and the fan had burned out so I
suspect the drive overheated. It's been a couple of weeks since I
last backed it up (I know, I know...) and there is some data I would
like to recover.
The system that it was on booted from this drive, and I am hoping that
there are some partitions that are still good which I can mount it
from another system. We have some linux boxes up and another
Sparc-Solaris 5.7 up which I can use to try and recover some of the
data. I don't really know how to go about it, though.
Can anyone offer some advice? Is there any hope? If I mount it on a
linux box, what fs type should I use in /etc/fstab? Should I try and
dump the data with dd, or fsck the drive?

You can do a kickstart from CD-ROM or a local network(harddrive).
Installing from a local network is actually the most common method of
installation.

Turn off automatic termination. It sometimes guesses wrong. Instead,
manually set it. Since you have only one drive attached, the card
should be terminating the entire bus.
Check the cable length. With a single Fast/Wide device, you should be
able to use a cable that is up to 6m long. But if the drive isn't fully
compliant to the spec, you may have to use something shorter.
Since the device is old, it may not be properly negotatng the bus
speed. Try using the SCSISelect utility to force the bus to a slower
speed when talking to device ID 2. I'd pick the slowest (10M/s) speed
(which will really be 20M/s if the device has a wide interface.)

There is no support for that controller yet. I've seen one posting ,

If you need a supported IDE Raid now, try 3ware (www.3ware.com) The

PB:
I have done many things to install my SB card but now it's OK.
I can hear Music (.wav, .MP3, .mid (with kmid)) under KDE but
I can't hear Music with kmidi (.kar) (.kar has exactly the same structure as
.mid (same chunks, midi events ...))
When I try these kind of command
cat zzz.wav /dev/audio ...
i hear all the music stream in half a second
I'm a beginner with Linux.
I see there is a lot of audio peripherals in /dev (Major devices 14, 35 ...)
I don't how an application find an audio device under KDE. I didn't find any
config file (for KDE or applications kmid, kmid)
with an /dev/ ... line
I would like to retrieve wich audio device use kmid and I would like to do
the same for kmidi.

Pardon me for asking a stupid question, but sometimes it's the stupid
questions that get overlooked. Are you sure you have ATAPI/IDE CD-ROM
support compiled into the kernel? Your message doesnt' make it clear
whether or not you can read data disks from the drive.

I't not about RH or not RH, it's about kernel option for SMP. As
long as your kernel is compiled with SMP support, adding a second
(third or fourth) CPU requires no changes to anything.
So if you upgrade a kernel, make sure you compile it with SMP
support.

To summarise what I think I've learned from this thread:
Build the box with 2 x Promise Ultra-33 cards and perform software RAID
(vinum in FreeBSD) or (md in Linux).
Sounds good to me :-) Just going to find a case now that will hold 8 ATA
drives plus CD plus floopy ;)
