Had no problem with MPPP using the patched ipppd I got with my Mandrake
7.1 or 7.2 when doing ISDN connections at up to 4 channels. the 2.4.3
kernel seems to be more stable about it, but it probably a driver issue
and not anything that has to do with pppd.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, but at work we have several Linux
computers, running Samba versions 2.07 through 2.2 and all the computers
(including their samba services) are doing authentication through
pam ,using pam_smb to query the Win2k PDC server.

And it works pretty much ok.

lilo instellation problem

2001-04-29 Thread Micha Feigin

Hello

I tried to install lilo on a new red hat 7 instalation.
I tried to istall it on a 15 meg hda2 /boot, located after a 16 gig
windows
partition (which I can't move/remove etc.).
I got an error (which coresponded to a comment during the installation
formating stage) which said that lilo couldn't install,
niether on hda2 nor on hda which reads as follows:

Warning: device 0x0302 exceeds 1024 cylinders limit. Fatal:
geo_comp_addr!
cylinder number is too big (2040 > 1023).

I can reinstall/format the linux partition. I couldn't get linux to load
off
of hda2 which contains the boot partition without lilo either (the
computer
just froze on startup).

The installation did boot ok from the boot disk.

Is there any way to solve this in order to use lilo instead of using
loadlin
instead?

Thank you.

Mandrake 8 problems

2001-04-29 Thread Gal Goldschmidt

Hi,

I upgraded from 7.2 using a clean install ( I formated everything but
/home )
I have 3dfx3000 & BP6 ( Dual Celeron).

The problem is palying MPEG1, The only way I can play those is in double
mode with
xmms,gtv xmovie just crash.
When I tried full screen or changing of the resulotion (Ctral+Alt +/-) X
crashes.
I disabled glx and now full screen works, but no normal size windows and
no GL.

avifile does not want to compile, I will look for a new version but it
compiled great on 7.2.

Before the Upgrade I hade the same kernel, the same X ( I upgraded to
KDE2.1.1)
I decided to move to a clean upgrade (8.0) and ended up with a broken
machine.

BTW KDE 2.1.1 does not like ISO-8859-8 as the default font ( in the
interlazaion menu),
It will not recover before you fix the .kde files.

Changing biditext (Xlib wizards, anyone?)

2001-04-29 Thread Ilya Konstantinov

Hi,

Anyone knows if it's possible to improve biditext so that it'll analyze
the character set of the font in the GC (and thus used in XDrawString)?

Looking around the Xlib API, it looks like the only way to do it is to
cache a font list and match font IDs. Is there a way to retrieve the
name (and thus, the XLFD) from the GC?

By definition, any NTP client/server connecting to a stratum 1 server becomes
a stratum 2 server, so saying it should only be used by stratum 2 servers
doesn't say much...

I think what you meant to emphasize was that a stratum 1 server should be
used only by an NTP *server* which belongs to a non-trivial organization
and which will be in-turn used by a non-trivial number of people. For example,
ntp.netvision.net.il (stratum 2) uses ntp.ilan.net.il (stratum 1).
ntp.technion.ac.il (stratum 3) uses relay.huji.ac.il (stratum 2) which uses
ntp.ilan.net.il (stratum 1). You get the idea.

Because the access time of a 60GB disk with 7200 revolutions per minute is
more or less a joke for high performance IO.

Re: RAID 5 with 3Ware IDE

Hi Ariel,

I'm not sure I'm understanding you.

Just for clarification: 3Ware hardware RAID card is a card that is using EIDE
hard drives instead of SCSI, with each IDE got it's own processor (on the
card), DMA channels and in some models - caching. Thats what I'm talking
about.

Linux kernel NFS V3? is it stable? faster then NFS V2?

I didn't understand how you tie the ethernet switch with the block size. it's
a 100 MBit switch and all the machines are equipped with Intel 100 MBit
cards..

If it's hard disk got it's own controller (processor on the card) and DMA
channel (I'm not talking about those cheap RAID solutions like HPT's one or
Promise 2 hard drives solution), why would I have those problems?

ntp.ac.il == ntp.ilan.net.il. It's public, but should only be used by
stratum 2 ntp servers. Stratum 0/1 servers are not to be used by end

About performance, 60GB disks with 7200rpm, using raid5, will result in
performance problems. If you are going to mount this using 100Mbit over a

2. How are the drivers inside the kernel? in 2.2.x? 2.4.x?

I'm planning to use NFS with it, but so far from my knowledge, Linux NFS V2
implementation are not good, and V3 is still experimental and unstable (if I
understand that correctly). Any suggestions? lots of users will have to
access this machine locally...

Any other suggestions regarding this RAID?

removing password limitation under red hat

2001-04-29 Thread Micha Feigin

I there a way to remove the password length limitation that is installed on
default with the red hat 7 instellation?
I know that there is some posibility of doing this, because my debian
instelation enables using empty passwords.

Thank you

lilo instellation problem

2001-04-29 Thread Micha Feigin

Hello

I tried to install lilo on a new red hat 7 instalation.
I tried to istall it on a 15 meg hda2 /boot, located after a 16 gig windows
partition (which I can't move/remove etc.).
I got an error (which coresponded to a comment during the installation
formating stage) which said that lilo couldn't install,
niether on hda2 nor on hda which reads as follows:

Warning: device 0x0302 exceeds 1024 cylinders limit. Fatal: geo_comp_addr!
cylinder number is too big (2040 > 1023).

I can reinstall/format the linux partition. I couldn't get linux to load off
of hda2 which contains the boot partition without lilo either (the computer
just froze on startup).

The installation did boot ok from the boot disk.

Is there any way to solve this in order to use lilo instead of using loadlin
instead?

Thank you.

RE: pptp and kernel 2.4.4

2001-04-29 Thread Haim Gelfenbeyn

I've upgraded to 2.4.4 from 2.4.2 today (mainly because of raiserfs
fixes), and didn't notice anything wrong with pptp. I did several
connects/disconnects, and everything was smooth. In fact, I didn't
notice anything wrong with any other application also, although I didn't
do any extensive testing... My box is Intel ISP1100, P3-800/128MB, used
primarily as router/proxy/mail server.

Public NTP servers in Israel

2001-04-29 Thread Oleg Goldshmidt

Can anyone point me to a list of public NTP servers in Israel. A
search on Google didn't yield anything useful. A search of this list's
archive yielded a few addresses scattered over several threads, but I
was wondering if a list similar to

http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/servers.htm

exists.

Thanks,

I don't know - I hope so. I havn't tried that yet. Also, when
I'll try, I need it to work from various X's, not only XFree86
(e.g. PCXware and eXceed under windows, HDS and NCD Xterminals,
as well as "Real" XFree86 on Linux). That's why I havn't yet.
It's easier to see hebrew than to type, and more important.

What do you mean by 'still'? I don't know of a driver that was
removed recently.
There are few VLB adapters that appear in the standard 2.2.18
kernel, e.g. UltraStor 34F, BusLogic BT-445C, etc.
