Gee, does it takes THAT much time from the GTK/GNOME camp to come up with a
front end to M.A.M.E? A KDE version was available since version ... hmm...
2.1 ;)

Seriously, M.A.M.E is NOT an emulator of an Atari - it emulates those old big
console machines (not home consoles) with games starting from PacMan, Donkey
Kong, etc (it support hundred of games already) and it's Linux/Unix port is
available (and updated) for more then 3 years now. It's also a great example
(if you look at the code) for good processor emulation (where are those days
were things were simple.. User mode, Supervisor mode, 16 registers - yup,
Motorola 68000 processor).

Enjoy,
Hetz

latin keyboard layout - REPOSTED

2003-01-28 Thread Arie Folger
A while ago I aksed the following question, but got no answer. This is
becoming very important:

I need to use umlauted (for German) and accented (for French) characters. I
have no desire to learn a radically new keyboard layout; Qwerty and Israeli
is enough for me.

I found a keyboard layout's images here:
http://crl.nmsu.edu/~mleisher/keyboards/latin.html
The images show what happens when pressing Alt, Alt-Gr, CTRL, shift or no
helper key. (One problem is that I have no idea how to make my keyboard have
that Alt-Gr.) I played around with KDE's keyboard selector, but could not
find what layout the web page's corresponds to. So...

* Does anybody know of another keyboard layout that covers pretty much the
same breadth of accented characters as the one on the web page above (I need
umlauts and accents at the very least. All additional characters, such as
copyright, trademark, ... are a boon), or
* does anybody recognize which keyboard layout the web page displays and what
setting I should use to replicate that under X? in the console?

Finally, I was wondering about the model. I have my "keyboard model" set to
generic 104 pc. However, my extra keyboard (primary keyboard is the laptop's
builtin one, but I often use an external keyboard) has 107 keys, the 104
layout plus power, sleep and wake up keys, yet there is no 107 key layout.
How do I make X recognize those keys exist (I will worry about mapping
something to them later)?
And I also notice that KDE insists that the left win key is a modifier. How do
I change that key into a non modifier key?

Thanks,

Arie Folger

Rabotai, Mahapach! (Survey Results of Desktop Managers)

2003-01-28 Thread Eli Marmor
H, not really ;-)

Actually, the results have been expected; And like today's election
results, the leader stays first, and the other side stays smaller, and
the surprise comes from the neutral camp.

Since I promised to summarize the results before Mina Zemach and Haim
Yavin, I'll do it now, but I want to send a yet another summary in a
few days, with analysis of the connection between the preferred desktop
manager and the reasons.

Each result, comes twice (2 numbers):

The first: any answer is counted ONCE.
The second: any answer that refers to X computers, is counted X.

Although the second number is important, the first is more exact; I
don't want to dig too deeply into statistical descriptions, but when
there are some people who are responsible (each) for many computers
(like 15), the Sampling Error jumps to the sky.

And the winner is...:

Answers:

My desktop environment management is:
-
15 35 1. Only KDE.
06 06 2. I prefer KDE.
01 01 3. Both.
05 05 4. I prefer Gnome.
04 18 5. Only Gnome.
07 11 0. None.

(sum:)
--
21 41 1+2
09 23 4+5

Reasons (please check all that apply):
--
08 14 A. Better Hebrew support.
01 01 B. Licensing.
04 07 C1. Similarity to Windows GUI.
04 04 C2. Difference from Windows GUI.
02 16 D. My company/organization dictates/recommends this desktop.
00 00 E1. This is the only desktop coming with my distribution.
04 06 E2. This is the default desktop that my distribution offers.
04 04 E3. This is the desktop that is best supported by my distribution.
05 09 F. I use an application(s) that runs better under this desktop (please
  detail - which app).
08 08 G1. Historical reasons.
18 34 G2. I've got used to this desktop.
12 18 G3. I have a lot of existing configurations/customizations for this
  desktop, and/or existing investments.
15 36 H. Another reason (PLEASE DETAIL)

If you want to combine the numbers, I would suggest to multiply the
first number by 3 and add it to the second number.

Please don't conclude anything from this survey;
Its main conclusions, require the analysis I mentioned above, which
will come later...

Re: spam mail filter

2003-01-28 Thread Daniel Vainsencher
My bayesian filter in part of Celeste, which is the mail client embedded
in an extremely rich environment called Squeak. This environment
supports development in Smalltalk, which is also what it is written in,
and what Celeste is written in. It's open source, though not Open
Source.

www.squeak.org

TFM goes something like this - your new, legitimate email appears in
folder "new". Your spam email appears in folder ".spam.". If you see a
false positive in ".spam.", or a false negative in "new", press the
button "Spam", to let the system know.

Simple as that...

ANN: syscalltrack 0.81 "Cruel Ducky" released

2003-01-28 Thread Muli Ben-Yehuda
syscalltrack-0.81, the 13th alpha release of the Linux kernel system
call tracker, is now available. syscalltrack supports version 2.4.x of
the Linux kernel on the i386 platform.

This release containes several important bug fixes and new features.

* What is syscalltrack?

syscalltrack is made of a pair of Linux kernel modules and supporting
user space environment which allow interception, logging and possibly
taking action upon system calls that match user defined
criteria. syscalltrack can operate either in "tweezers mode", where
only very specific operations are tracked, such as "only track and log
attempts to delete /etc/passwd", or in strace(1) compatible mode,
where all of the supported system calls are traced. syscalltrack can
do things that are impossible to do with the ptrace mechanism, because
its core operates in kernel space.

* Where can I get it?

Information on syscalltrack is available on the project's homepage:
http://syscalltrack.sourceforge.net, and in the project's file
release.

The source for the latest version can be downloaded directly from:
http://osdn.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/syscalltrack/syscalltrack-0.81.tar.gz
or any of the other sourceforge mirrors.

* Call for developers:

The syscalltrack project is looking for developers, both for kernel
space and user space. If you want to join in on the fun, get in touch
with us on the syscalltrack-hackers mailing list
(http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/syscalltrack-hackers).

* License and NO Warranty

syscalltrack is Free Software, licensed under the GNU General Public
License (GPL) version 2. The 'sct_ctrl_lib' library is licensed under
the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL).

syscalltrack is in _alpha_ stages and comes with NO warranty. We put
it through extensive testing and routinely run it on our systems, but
if it breaks something, you get to keep all of the pieces.

* PGP Signature

All syscalltrack releases from now on will be signed. This release is
signed with my pgp public key, which you can get from
http://www.mulix.org/pubkey.asc or via
'gpg --keyserver wwwkeys.pgp.net --recv-keys 0xBFD537CB'

Happy syscalltracking!

===

New in version 0.81, "Cruel Ducky"
---

* This release includes support for matching against void pointers
(addresses). For example, you can match against msync's first
  parameter, const void* start.

* This release re-enables support for tracking the shmat and msgrcv
calls, after fixing a bug in their tracking support.

* sctrace now supports strace's 'follow forks' mode.

* Implement tracking for the last two remaining syscalls, sys_vfork
  and sys_bdflush.

* Make the userspace tools behave sensibly when the kernel modules
aren't loaded and complain to run, instead of giving obscure errors.

* Make sct_config complain about AFTER rules with FAIL actions. A FAIL
action is only valid in BEFORE rules.

* Add '-h' and '--help' support to sct_logctrl.

* Assorted other kernel modules bug fixes.

===

New in version 0.80, "Tanned Otter"
---

* This release contains support for multiple readers of the log
device. It is now possible to have two (or more) different log
device readers, e.g. one running in a terminal ('sctlog'), and the
other being a daemon reading directly from the log device and
parsing its output to warn about anomalities. Each log device reader
can set its own log device parameter, such as the log format and the
log buffer size. See sct_logctrl(1) and sctlog(1) for further
  details.

* Log output now goes to the log device by default, not to syslog. use
sctlog(1) (or 'cat /dev/sct_log') to see it.

* The user can now configure the 'max record length' of records
printed to the log device file. 'max record length' is useful when
logging the parameters for read() or write(), for example, because
the 'buffer' parameter could be very large and filled with garbage,
thus flooding the log device. This patch allows you to set the max
record length to something sane, so only the first bytes of the
buffer are printed, followed by '...'. Setting it to 0 disables it.

* This release disables support for the 'shmat', 'semctl' and
'msgrecv' system calls (muxed functions of the sys_ipc system call,
to be precise). It will be fixed and included in the next release.

* Make rules printed by 'sct_config download' look nicer.

===

New in version 0.75, "Boffing Hyrax"
---

* This release contains complete autotools support for the entire
syscalltrack system: kernel modules, libraries and
  applications. Download, run './confi

Could the mandrake SRPMs be rebuilt on RedHat? Probably no
How much work is required to modify them?

Alternatively: How much work is required to modify the latest rawhide KDE
SRPMs to build wit hthe latest KDE release?

(Does recent QT have font-config 2 support built-in, or do RedHat still
have to patch this in? font-config2 is definitly one of the good things
pushed by RH8. The only problem with it is that some legacy programs
don't support it ;-) )

What's the deal with the redhat - kde relationship?
Did that bluecurve/bero-quiting incident kill our chances to get KDE
rpms when major versions are released?
Is anybody in redhat in charge of KDE connections?
Is this the beginning of the segmentation between europe and the states
leading to World War Three ... woh I think I got a little carried away ...

Anyway at least konstruct does the job ...
