Reminder: linux-il archives to be closed

2003-12-28 Thread Evgeny Stambulchik
Hello,

This is to remind you that the linux-il archives @plasma-gate.weizmann.ac.il
that have been on the air since the maillist start of operation in 1994, will
be frozen on 01.01.2004 when emails to the server will have been
administratively blocked. Please update your links/bookmarks to point to the
Shachar's archives (http://mirror.hamakor.org.il/archives/linux-il/) instead.

Regards,

Evgeny

I'm sorry to hear that you couldn't resolve the plasma-gate issues.

Just a small correction.

These are not my archives. I am not the one paying for them. I'm merely
doing some of the administrative work related to them.

These are hosted on Hamakor's server, and that's where the credit should go.

  Thanks,

Shachar

P.S.
If there is a strong desire, we can integrate the old archives (pre
whatever is currently the first date archived) too. Please let us know
if that is desired.

There is no problem about keeping the old archives accessible on plasma-gate -
you can just add a relevant link(s). Well, as long as port 80 doesn't meet the

Suggestions for open source backup program

2003-12-28 Thread Baruch Birnbaum
Hi linux-il,

I need a backup software for linux that should:

0. Be open source.
1. Support tape backup.
2. Be liberal with cartridge order within a backup set. (We have a bad
experience with afbackup being overly strict, we had to waste time with
fixing things every time a customer insert the wrong backup cartridge)
3. Be able to manage large amount of data (10s of GBs) .
4. Support backup over network (i.e. the backup tape drive may reside on
another machin on the LAN)
5. Support simultaneous network backups from many clients to one backup
server.

Any suggestions?

Maybe because you didn't receive any new mail messages. It should
appear after new messages arrive to your account and until you read
them for the first time.

No, as long as your KDE / GNOME panels have the tray icons container
shown. They do, by default.

How does it know to recognize the panel cross desktop managers?

There's a standard for tray icons on X. You can find it here:

I'm currently using gnome with the panel notification area enabled -
(that's the place I'd assume the notificator will pop up) - and I see nada.

Notification icons of programs such as SIM, licq, k3b and kmix appear there?

Not sure about (5) (but one can devise himself a solution for that), I
think dump should be able to do it
http://dump.sourceforge.net/ || http://sourceforge.net/projects/dump/
You can use rsh (or more secure alternatives) combinations for remote
backup.
Although this sounds too much of a hand work, this is actually not too
complicated. dump interactive mode helps your life as a sysadmin a lot
when that user comes a long with a shy smile on his face... :-)

Re: help with partition table

2003-12-28 Thread Eli Billauer
Get yourself a Knoppix 3.3 (or later) CD. Boot from the CD, and use
gpart. It's not a graphical interface, as one may think, but a
command-line tool that recognizes the partitions on the hard disk. If
your partition table is wrecked anyhow, you may use it's feature of
setting up the partition table according to what it finds. Despite the
use-at-your-own risk warning, it works well.

Also see http://www.stud.uni-hannover.de/user/76201/gpart/

Good luck,

Automatically unmonuting an idle partition

Hi all,

I'm working on tightening the security of my laptop (installed with RH9).

I'm trying to figure out a way to automatically unmount a partition that

reads or writes were made from/to that partition.

Any hints on tools, scripts or APIs are welcomed.
