Make sure you work with a locale whose charset is UTF-8. The simplest
thing is just to set LANG=he_IL.UTF-8 or LANG=en_US.UTF-8 [*] .

It is also possible to set:

LANG=he_IL.UTF-8
LC_MESSAGES=C

to avoid programs from using Hebrew as their language.

This is normally set in /etc/environment or explicitly by the DM (gdm/kdm)
when you login. Make sure also that such a locale exists. Though the DM
normally only knows how to set LANG and not something more complex.

[*] en_US.UTF-8 is generally a bad choice for locale definitions, as
they use a different date format, printer page size, mesurment units,
etc. en_GB.UTF-8 is closer to what we have

wget -r retrieves everything.

2005-10-18 Thread David Harel

Hi all,

I need help with wget recursive retrieval.
Which option inhibits wget to retrieve docs which are on an upper level
in the documents (url) hierarchy?

-np or --no-parent.

I encountered the same problem myself once, and the Freenode #debian people
told me to RTFM. After I read the entire man page and still could not find
it, they eventually gave me the answer. This made me think that the new
acronym should be JATFM which is Just Answer The Fabolous Man. I blogged
about it, and received some commentary.

Mark Jason Dominus had something interesting to say about this too, in his
About Fish (Give a man a fish) lightning talk.

Re: wget -r retrieves everything.

2005-10-18 Thread David Harel

Hey, Thanks.

I red the wget man, saw the -np option but eventually failed to realize
that is the solution.
I think a second thought about wget defaults should be invested or
typical profiles should be designed and documented clearly.

In my opinion, many people use RTFM too fast. I like your JATFM, as
personally I find most of the documents, even though have been improved
significantly, are still really difficult to understand. It seems to me
that the documents use students jargons and speech style - no offense.
Also I keep getting that disturbing feeling of some kind of vanity
from the document as if it is trying not to explain a subject but to
show how smart the writer is.

[S-OP]About HSpell

2005-10-18 Thread Alon

Hi,
list.

I
have a slightly off topic question.

I
use a phpBB forum and the most annoying thing there is are people who cannot
write correct Hebrew.

So,
now I want to try and add hspell based spell checking when people submit the
message it will first require them to correct it.

The
real question is:

Do
you know how can I combine PHP and HSpell together ?

Is
there already something like this someone done ?

Thanks,

Alon.

Might not be the best way, but check
http://il.php.net/manual/en/ref.exec.php

But than you should only have static interface (or do something with
php/javascript to suggest alternates to the mis-spelled words).

A new fancy font from Culmus

2005-10-18 Thread Maxim Iorsh

Hello all,

I’m still alive. Besides that, a new font named “Anka” is available for download from the “Fancy fonts”
section of the Culmus site (http://culmus.sourceforge.net/).

Unlike in past releases, this time I chose to publish in
addition the OpenType version of the font.
Unfortunately, most Linux applications don’t support OpenType,
or support it only partially:

 Gedit and Kword
can both display it, but fail to print.
OO and Abiword on Linux don’t even recognize it, while Abiword on Windows displays and prints it just fine,
so I guess OO+Windows will work too.
 MS Word
supports the OpenType version too, except for
 WordArt.

In fact, in Windows you even get some rudimentary kerning,
which is supposed to make font look a little better in print. In an unrelated issue,
in Windows the font is listed under its Hebrew name as אנקה, and can be found
at the very bottom of the list of fonts.

Your comments and suggestions are welcome.

Maxim.

Re: [S-OP]About HSpell

2005-10-18 Thread O.K

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I was looking for something more elegant as
hspell requires file as input. It's not support piping. Or maybe I am wrong
?

I will await Nadav suggestions. He's the one who wrote hspell anyway :-)

Alon.

very cool! pretty font, I'm off to test it now! Good work on the

One note to Baruch Even - if it wasn't for this post, I would not have
heard of the fancy fonts section and would not have downloaded it... any
chance those fonts could be added to culmus or packaged as culmus-fancy
on Debian?
