Free software trophies competition - 2009
Hi all, I know some of you here are maintainers for free software. Cetril is holding another round of its Trophées du Logiciel Libre (Free Software Trophies). I participated in this competition last year, and I can whole-heartedly recommend the experience. More details at my blog (Hebrew) - http://blog.shemesh.biz/ and at the competition's web site http://www.trophees-du-libre.org/index.php?lang=en. [CALL FOR LECTURE] Lego Mindstorms
Hi All, On Haifux's meeting break (when things happen) today we have mentioned Lego Mindstorm as a cool topic for a lecture, if only it was open source. However, it seems that Lego going open source on its firmware is old news (2006): http://mindstorms.lego.com/Press/2057/Open%20Source%20Announcement.aspx So, is anyone up to the task of preparing a lecture about it? Maybe including a live demo, if anyone has it at home (yes, I know some of you have it...)? Reminder - we still do not have any commitment for a lecture about Linux's new scheduler. Thanks, Orna.

Re: Webcam Recommendations?
To tell the truth, as someone who is following the linux hardware support, I can tell you that I didn't see lately any cam from the major player (Microsoft, Logitech, Creative, Philips) that is not supported. Some are supported only partially and some (specially Logitech) are fully supported. Even the cheapest ones (the ones which you can buy at the supermarket for 30-60 NIS) are supported by Linux. Funny thing happend to me few months ago: I bought a really cheap webcam from the supermarket (it costs me about 30 NIS) for some testings (just some motion detection, quality was not a factor). With Windows XP the machine was crashing entirely (MS knows that but there's no replacement driver) but with Linux (Fedora 8) it worked excellent. I tested it only with 'nv' - never installed 'nvidia' in my PC. Well, I think you didn't install it due it closeness, if I'm right... My suggestion would be to install the closed driver and see if this problem returns. If it's not, then you should file in a bug with the X.org. If the problem still there, then it could be either the card or the camera's driver. You might also try the vesa driver to see if this problem appears, although I'm not sure if there aren't any specific parts of nv driver in vesa driver. Re: gspca with GeForge FX 5200 experience, anyone? (was: Re: Webcam Recommendations?)
I don't have gspca for my current kernel (2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686) and the gspca-source package didn't compile for it (there are Debian bugs filed for it). My story with gspca and the above video card is filed as bugs with Debian: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=444314 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=423920 As far as I could see, no action was taken with those bugs. So I am looking for people who experienced similar hang ups to help diagnose the problem. --- Omer P.S.: Hetz's suggestion to try with the vesa driver was nice, but when configured to use vesa, the X server did not start.
