Next Monday, February 2nd at 18:30, Haifux will gather to hear
Tim Lord speaking about

Sifting a Haystack -- The Slashdot Back-End From a Naive User's
Point of View

Abstract

I'll give an overview of the Slashdot editorial process, and
demonstrate the back-end tools (all running on Linux, mostly written
in Perl, with an increasingly Ajax-based user interface) that we use
to organize hundreds of submissions each day to select the handful
that we post to the page. I'll also explain some of the software-based
methods we use to identify and avoid abusive users, and answer any
questions that I can.

 Hi,

My friend needs to broadcast an event live for 15 viewers. Unicast
broadcasting requires tremendous bandwidth and hence - money. Thus he asked
 me to check multicast option.

There are instructions on doing multicast using VLC:
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpkmdi1gKvM

but during my researches I discovered that few deployed routers support
multicasting technolody, and even then, the resulting video stream would
 suffer from slightest packet drop.

 Can anybody comment?

If I understand correctly, every multicast-enabled router or firewall must
monitor subscribed multicasts and periodically poll the clients, whether
they are still interested in getting the multicast stream.
I have not found a way to forward multicast packets on Linux. Once there
was package mrouterd, but it is not shipped anymore.

Have anybody worked with multicasted video on Linux?

i do not think ip multicast is the solution. using ip multicast it is easier
to create high load traffic and slow down the net ., so it is disabled
on purpose ...

The better soultion IMHO is peer2peer, however i am not aware of any
open-source software that lets you watch video online using peer2peer
technology

At least with claws mail, in addition to the list, if you have a reply to

On the other hand, I've noticed that there are two from fields at the moment,

Bash auto lock?

2009-01-29 Thread Amos Shapira
Hello,

As part of PCI DSS compliance process
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_DSS) one of the questions there is
about forcing auto-lock of shell sessions upon inactivity.

I know about autologout in sshd, which I personally disable (but maybe
now will have to enable for PCI compliance).

But if auto-lock is acceptable then it looks more appealing to me
since it would mean that I won't lose remote sessions while going out
to lunch.

Back in BSD 4 there used to be a utility to lock the screen called
lock. I don't see it any more. The closest I found is vlock which
at first I though is meant to be used only on virtual consoles but
apparently it can be used for ssh session as well.

Here is a link on how to set this up with zsh, and why it won't work
for bash:
http://www.howtointernets.com/wiki/index.php/Set_up_Inactive_Shell_Timeout_/_Lock_on_CentOS_5

Does anyone know how to achieve what I'm looking for?

Thanks,
