DWG Drawings

2009-03-08 Thread Noam Rathaus
Hi,

I am trying to open DWG drawings on my Ubuntu, but the online solutions are
problematic to say the least, either to run it under Wine which doesn't work
for me - the drawings don't show up (they do show up on Windows)

Anyone knows a native solution to open DWG? I can't find any beside the
OpenDWG project that doesn't appear to offer any programs for Linux.

First things first, Noam. Writeto Autodesk and let them know that
there is demand for AutoCAD under Linux. If we don't start letting
these compaines know that we are here and want their product, then we
will forever be chasing somebody else's tail.

Re: DWG Drawings

2009-03-08 Thread Dotan Cohen
I'd add that while AutoCAD's DWG format is proprietary, and very closely
protected, AutoDESK has shown some move towards FOSS in releasing their web
map server, Mapguide Open Source as a fully open source project.
Furthermore, AutoDesk is a major contributor to the foundation known as
OSGeo (www.osgeo.org) which promotes open source GIS software, maintains an
incubation process for new FOSS GIS projects, and certifies mature
 projects.

Having said that, I'm aware of one (proprietary) software for Linux that
handles dwg files: Varicad. AFAIK it's similar in features to AutoCAD
Lite  and costs much less. QCAD, the FOSS CAD software reads and writes
only dxf (as you probably already found). OpenDWG is pretty far behind - it
supports only DWG 2000 and older formats, and it's a library that needs to
be used by some other software.

Exactly, the CAD market on Linux is reaching critical mass and _now_
is the time to speak up! Please update us with their response, Noam.
You might want to contact an Israeli AutoCAD distributor as well:

As far as I know, Hebrew doesn't work well with such solutions. It's
kept in Visual order inside the PDF, because PDF is considered an
end-product. So reconstructing it requires knowing where the lines end
and converting each line from visual to logical. I think none of the
existing solutions is written with an awareness of this, so Hebrew
would be botched.

I'm pretty sure VariCAD supports DWG, and they have a native Linux
version (even 64bit). You can get a trial version from their site:

www.varicad.com

It's not free software, but what else have we?

Varicard software (viewer) appears to be free of charge and not a trial
version and works natively on Debian (Linux).

Thanks for the tip.
