[CORRECTION] Nvidia's LLVM-CUDA release is not open-source

2012-02-29 Thread Shlomi Fish
Hi all,

here is the log of an IRC conversation on Freenode's #radeon channel (dedicated
to the Free-as-in-speech video-radeon driver for ATI cards) which clarifies
some claims given here -
http://mailman.cs.huji.ac.il/pipermail/linux-il/2011-December/008335.html

Feb 28 20:09:02Hi all.
Feb 28 20:10:38Will there be any chance we would see OpenCL
support in the video-radeon driver (not fglrx) now that Nvidia open-sourced the
LLVM CUDA support and that the Nouveau people have implemented open-source
OpenCL support in their open-source Nouveau driver?
Feb 28 20:11:58 rindolf: It's being worked on now, latest code
is here: cgit.freedesktop.org/~tstellar/mesa clover-r600-master
Feb 28 20:12:43http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~tstellar/mesa -
URL which can be clicked.
Feb 28 20:27:22 rindolf: also FWIW, nvidia didn't open source anything
yet. The CUDA stuff is not open source
Feb 28 20:28:54agd5f: I see.
Feb 28 20:29:43agd5f: so what was the big announcement about?
Future intentions?
Feb 28 20:31:04 phoronix said it was open source but it's not, probably
to boost ad revenue
Feb 28 20:32:28 i think it's open source to restricted people
right now ... which i have hard time to understand how
Feb 28 20:34:05glisse: you mean it is “source available” to
restricted people right now - not “open-source”
Feb 28 20:34:07 they are basically making the src available by request
under unknown terms. probably mostly targeting academics and certain other
businesses that need the src
Feb 28 20:35:07 rindolf: i mean some people have access to
source, why you could have access or not is unclear
Feb 28 20:35:15 you need to sign something with them i think
Feb 28 20:35:20 so it's not open source
Feb 28 20:35:20glisse: I see.
Feb 28 20:35:26glisse: yes.
Feb 28 20:35:29 or someone would have pushed it somewhere
Feb 28 20:37:19 rindolf: the press release says nothing about source
code:
http://nvidianews.nvidia.com/Releases/Major-New-NVIDIA-CUDA-Release-Makes-It-Faster-and-Easier-to-Accelerate-Scientific-Research-With-GPUs-757.aspx
Feb 28 20:38:01agd5f: OK.

So in this case, the Greeks did not bear any gifts (though there is FOSS
OpenCL-support from the nouveau people and an upcoming one for the FOSS
video-radeon driver.).

Regards,

Shlomi Fish

iRiver Story HD and Hebrew

2012-02-29 Thread Steve G.
Does anyone have an experience with the iRiver Cover Story or Story HD
readers?

In particular,

1. is it compatible with Linux to add/remove books/music?

2. can it read Hebrew?

3. can it be loaded up with a linux distribution, instead of the firmware?
