Has anyone discovered good resources for teaching kids python? Hebrew?
 (Ages 8-11)

Code.org has great resources for abstract programing. They even translate
into Hebrew. But very little to teach kids skills they can use on their
own.

Now I want to teach my oldest Python but I can't find any good resources.

JOBSEEK- Adopt a Programmer

2011-01-13 Thread Justin
Do you have room in your software company to adopt a good programmer?

We found this hacker wandering around without tags in large enterprise
company. He had been abused for some time but is still able to produce code,
and quite lovable.

He was apparently raised in startups, Where he had 15 years experience and
programed in 20+ languages, with current expertise in Unix, C, MySQL,
MongoDB, PHP, Perl and Javascript.
He also has recent expertise in .Net, but is quite shy about it. He's a
coder who can bring lots of joy to a good startup.

He is about medium size, a dark brown coat, and has glowing references from
his current (enterprise) employer as well as the Weissman Institute.

So if you have a startup, and have room for a really adorable hacker please
consider adopting him.

Reply to this email address.

PS. The programmer is not normally in the habit of referring to himself in
the third person. He just thinks this is funny. His sense of humor is
probably his biggest problem.

Re: What to tell 13 year old kids about Linux and Open Source?

2011-01-10 Thread Justin
13yr old? I'd emphasize that Linux doesn't host spyware either by
infection, trojan or the manufacturers. So it's less likely to record your
porn browsing habits. (hey it worked for IE8)

I might also point out that Windows is what grumpy adults are forced to use
in their offices. And the people changing the world over in The Valley, are
using Linux.

Teens also spend an inordinate amount of time fantasizing that they are
special, and that anything they don't have limits. Point out that in Linux
they can learn every detail, nuance and control it, and the world will
reward them for this. But in Windows, their is a limit they are ALLOWED to
learn before working for MS.

Sizzle, not the Steak?

Re: which router

2010-04-25 Thread Justin
I bought a TL-WR541G, which worked great from the moment I plugged it in.
Good strong wifi signal and easy to work with L2TP in Israel. But it died
on me after 2 months, not really sure why.

I settled on an Edimax, which connects to the ISP well, but has the weakest
wifi I think I've ever seen (it barely covers one room). In the end I use
my Edimax to connect to the ISP and my trusty WRT54G (classic by now)
Linksys for pumping out the WiFi.

To date, I have had no real luck connecting my Linksys to an Israeli ISP
with any firmware.

ISP recomendation found

2009-11-03 Thread Justin
I switched yesterday to Comm.net.il from Interal/Eliat Internet after they
switched their hardware to Bezeq.

Comm.net.il is slightly more expensive, about as much as a Bezeq line plus
the gamer package. But considerably out performs the Bezeq equivalent even
at lower listed speeds.

They do not appear to do any traffic shaping and do not block any ports.

They responded to my installation problems (not their fault; old american
router) immediate, and email responses were answered in less than 5 min. At
one point they spent over 40min on the phone helping me. Excellent service.

Mickey Israeli, the man who provided me with tech support, was also familiar
(very) with Linux.

VOIP, Torrents and streaming media all perform better on Comm.net.il than on
Interal.

Re: eTextBooks (for kids)

2009-09-08 Thread Justin
The problem isn't the writers making money, it's the publishers.
A text book, even in a "small" market like Israel will go out to tens of
thousands of children a year. An author could make a lucrative living just
by selling the eText for a few shekels, certainly much less than is payed
now for the print editions.

The publishers put pressure to keep the industry to keep it locked up in a
medium that requires their services. In this way it is analogous to the
news, music and movie industries. These industries have long worked hard to
cut the cost of production, for their own benefit. The change comes with the
rise of a new distribution model that doesn't necessitate their core
service: publishing & promotions.

I have no love or hate for book publishers. But if they are superseded by
something that improves quality, increases choice, and allows lesser knowns
to enter the market then good riddance to them.

then all the more respect to them. Of course this will make the
 publishers
unhappy, and they'll have to compete harder to have someone pay for
 their
 work.

But this is all hypothetical as I have yet to hear about any such
 project.

eTextBooks (for kids)

2009-09-07 Thread Justin
Is there a place to buy electronic versions of textbooks for (israeli)
school children?
The schools don't have places for kids to keep their books on premises, so
they have to schlep all their books all day long. They are heavy. I'd
rather they carried a small laptop or e-book reader.

Any ideas?

Re: preg_match and Hebrew?

2009-09-07 Thread Justin
Zend operates out of some pretty swank offices in Ramat Gan. So I doubt the
PHP core team would be able to get very far without keeping some kind of
Hebrew support.

I get error messages and cannot complete my download. "some error"=10

Then i sent a test mail from pine to my self and the header looks like this:

Mach 64 server

1999-05-14 Thread Laporte, Justin

I have an ATI IIc 3d rage pro video card mach64 with internal Ramdac. I have
tried all the mach 64 and ATI servers. Does anyone know of an X sever that
will run on this card properly other than SVGA? Also I have always tried to
probe clock during setup and it hangs, would selecting dont probe clock
help? Or possibly does any one have RH 6 and know of this support with the
new distribution i am running 5.2.
