usb mass storage and scsi emulation

2004-07-22 Thread alex rait
hello,
  I have some wierd problem:
I compiled my kernel 2.6.7 with
SCSI disk support
SCSI generic support
Support for USB
USB device filesystem
EHCI HCD (USB 2.0) support
OHCI HCD support
UHCI HCD (most Intel and VIA) support
USB Mass Storage support
--
everything is loaded so this is the output (without sound and network) of lsmod:
ppp_deflate 4548 -
zlib_deflate 20504 -
zlib_inflate 20644 -
bsd_comp5124 -
ppp_async 9764 -
ppp_generic25592 -
slhc6116 -
uhci_hcd 28980 -
ohci_hcd 18920 -
usb_storage26596 -

when I insert my disk on key I can see this in /proc/scsi/scsi:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/dev# cat /proc/scsi/scsi
Attached devices:
Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: Generic Model: Traveling Disk Rev: 1.11
  Type: Direct-AccessANSI SCSI revision: 02

-
Then I want to know to what sdX my DOK is assigned so I run dmesg, but here is the
problem, I get this:

scsi0 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Vendor: Generic Model: Traveling DiskRev: 1.11
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
USB Mass Storage device found at 3
usb 2-2: USB disconnect, address 3
usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using address 4
scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Vendor: Generic Model: Traveling DiskRev: 1.11
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
USB Mass Storage device found at 4
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/dev#

___

normally, I would see some entry like:
sda: sda1
(as I understood from others..)
but I don't have it..

any ideas?

thanx for your help
alex R.

Re: [Haifux] Needed: Project manager for Ha'makor Bug Bounties

2004-05-31 Thread alex rait
The idea is good indeed, it should encourage people to focus on the most annoying
bugs. Though on the other hand it might serve only a few of us who are richer than
others (thus diverging from the main track of development). I believe you should
somehow limit the fees, this way, demanding more people to participate.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Ha'makor wants to run a "bug bounty" project, where
people pay money that accumulates to fund fixing bugs in free software. A
suggested mechanism is detailed, followed a call for volunteers for the role
of project manager, and a reference to the dedicated mailing list for this
project.

-

Hi,
I think Ha'makor should start a project of "bug bounties". The main idea
is that people put money to fix the bugs that most annoy them, and when the
bug is fixed, all the accumulated money is given to the person or people who
fixed it.

1. SUGGESTED BUG BOUNTY MECHANISM

The mechanism I suggest for this bounty system, is that a person buys
"bug tokens" for some amount that expire after, say, a year. They can then
divide this money between bugs as they see fit, setting an expiration time
for each bug. For example, I would pay 50 NIS for fixing bug 12345 until
1/1/2005, but I will pay an additional 50 NIS if it is fixed before
1/9/2004, and also I will pay 100 NIS for fixing but 23456 until 1/4/2005.
If the date has passed the person can re-use the token for the same or other
bugs, up until the expiration time of the token, when all funds come into
the hands of Ha'makor.
Instead of (or in conjunction with) expiring tokens, we can also put a,
say, 10% levy on all tokens bought that comes into Ha'makor's pockets.
The actual tokens could be sold by cheque, using payment slips, given free
to members (say, a free 10 NIS 1-year token per year for members), and sold
for cash in events such as APIII (you sell a piece of paper with a code for
the site).
A person who wants to see the bug can see the current total payoff per
deadline on the website. For example, bug 12345 can have a bounty of 1200
NIS until 1/9/2004, 750 NIS until 1/1/2005 and 100 NIS until 1/5/2005.
When a bug is fixed, a neutral body (Ha'makor board for example) decides
if the bug is really fixed, who deserves the payoff, and if and how it
should be divided. I suggest we limit payoffs to Israelis, as shipping money
overseas may be problematic. This means that if a non-Israeli solves the
bug, the money goes to Ha'makor.

Any comments/suggestions on the above mechanism are welcome. Please send
to the bounty mailing list: bounty AT projects.hamakor.org.il

2. WHAT DO WE NEED

To make this dream come true we need someone to devote time and effort to
manage and coordinate this project, a programmer or programmers to write the
code behind the site, and someone to operate the project. All three could be
the same person.

Q: What are the tasks of the manager?
A: The manager will need to
 a) Coordinate legal consultaion from our lawyer (Haim Ravia), including
drafting the terms and conditions of the system,
 b) Verify accounting procedure for incoming and outgoing payments from
our accountant.
 c) Find programmers to code the site and/or do it by him/herself.
 d) Make sure everything works well.

Q: Who can be a manager?
A: Anybody who thinks he or she can and has time to spend on running this
project. Preferrably a member or friend of Ha'makor, and with some
technical background. Should be enthusiastic about the idea, but
   otherwise why apply ;)?

Q: How do I become a manager?
A: E-mail the board of Ha'makor at board AT hamakor.org.il with your name,
expertise, and amount of free time ;)...

To make things clear, we are looking for volunteers, and we do not intend
to pay any money to the manager(s) and maintainer(s) of this project.

/dev in with 2.6 has been rearranged

2004-05-09 Thread alex rait
I was trying to compile my 2.6.5 kernel in debian, when after some actions I can't
recall now, the /dev directory underwent some modifications:
Somehow there appeared subfolders, and the dev files could be found only it's
category. For instance in the folder /dev/partitions I've found my harddrives...There
was no sign to the long list of files that I was used to in kernel 2.4
I tried to do the same with slackware and other debian I had, but I wasn't successful.
Does anyone knows how to configure the kernel for it, or maybe it has no relation to
it?

realplayer8

2003-07-18 Thread alex rait
Once the realplayer8 worked well for me, but now when I've reinstalled my redhat 8, id
dosn't work anymore.
I have the bin file downloaded from the realplayer site. After I installed it in
/usr/local/Realplayer8, I encounter strange problems when trying to exectute
artsdsp ./realplay
1)if i am root, then the following message appears:
/tmp/mcop-alexrait is not owned by user
2)otherwise if I login as a user, the realplayer works for about 0.01 seconds and then
gets stuck.
Can anyone help me with this please
I have redhat 8, KDE.
Thanx to everyone
Alex.

using usb modem in linux

2003-07-17 Thread alex rait
I suppose it was already discussed here, but nevertheless:
I have an adsl connection via the ALE 130 usb modem, it has no drivers yet for linux
for as much as I know, but somewhere I was told that it is possible to recompile the
kernel in a way that it would support the mode.
Is it true? If yes, how exactly should I do that?

Thanx to everyone.
Alex.

mozilla plugins

2003-07-06 Thread alex rait
Hello all,
Somehow the java-vm plugin doesn't work with my mozilla 1.3.1
When I enter a site with java applets, I am asked for permission to install the
plugin. I accept it, download, install, but then again, it asks for plugin as if
nothing had happened.
I tried to look at help -> plugins and there I saw that the java-vm is already
installed and enabled.
I am using red hat 8.0.
Thanx to everyone,
alex.

apt-get

2003-07-05 Thread alex rait
I cannot make it work with my redhat 8.0. The message I get is that it cannot connect
to some host. I am behind a proxy, but I don't know how to specify it in the console.
Is there a way to do that? I believe it is some kind of environment variable, but
which one and where can I find it?
thank you.
