Sorry - thought it was clear from my signature - Mandriva 2008.1 - official
RPMs.

The script that starts firefox disabls output. Which is annoying.
I agree :-)

 For starters, start it with:

   strace -f -o firefox_trace firefox
I did try that a few days ago, but there was no real point, because the
crashes are apparently random and usually happen after hours of running
(when I'm not at the computer).

In any case, it seems that FLASH was the problem since the browser has now
been running for about 52 hours with no problems. There are 2 strange things
that I'll have to look into.

1 - when I dis-abled FLASH, I discovered that both 9 and 10 were installed
(don't ask how - I have no idea). Tomorrow I'll try re-enabling only one of
them and see what happens.

2 - even though I'm now pretty sure that FLASH was the problem, I'm not clear
on why, because I have the Flashblock extension installed and usually allow
flash only when it's really needed - for instance on Youtube.

 Thanks Dotan,

I didn't know where Mozilla keeps the config files
~/.mozilla. Yes your right, Anti-Spyware manufacturers scare
people over Cookies and also your right they won't make your
Firefox crash but they can slow down the speed of the
Internet pages drastically. However there's still a privacy
problem to handle even in Linux, but that is a different
issue from what Shlomo wants to know.

Like you Dotan, I think that an Add on is to blame in his
 Firefox.

I listed what works OK for me - variety is the spice of
life. Control Shift X should appear in the Edit Menu but if
it doesn't then you have to enable it with going to
about:config in Firefox and ignore any warnings and search
for the preference called bidi.browser.ui, double click it
  set its value to true.

Tic Tac is good for GMail.

2 - Like both of you, I also suspect an add-on, but I have a large number of

time (disable half of them and see what happens and so on).

That's why I want to know which extensions you use. I have also had
some crashes and I'd start with our common extensions.

3 - What I really want to know is whether there's any log that could help. As
I wrote, about:crashes doesn't work in Linux (I wonder why).

I don't think that there is, I've asked once on the Mozillazine forums
and the reply was that there is no log. Thunderbird does log, so the
code is there, but no used in Firefox.

Thanks to Moshe and Dotan for their replies. Let me clarify a couple of
things.

1 - I do know about safe-mode and yes, Moshe, it does work in Linux, but that
doesn't help discover what was causing the crash.
2 - Like both of you, I also suspect an add-on, but I have a large number of
them - probably too many ;-). So the elimination process could take a long
time (disable half of them and see what happens and so on). BTW - all the
add-ons I have claim to be compatible and when updating Firefox, the
compatibility checker didn't flag any of them. In Firefox 2.* I had more
add-ons, but some were disabled (not compatable) and there were several
others that I decided to disable.
3 - What I really want to know is whether there's any log that could help. As
I wrote, about:crashes doesn't work in Linux (I wonder why).

about:crashes would aggregate your crash information as soon as you report
them to Mozilla. Some Linux distributions are compiling Firefox without the
crash reporter, in order to make the software more similar to their other
applications and use the distribution crash reporter instead, so you'll
report your crashes to them instead of the software developers team. I have
wrote about this issue in my blog - http://tomercohen.com/2009/02/27/?p=537

In order to solve your issue, please download Firefox binaries directly from
Mozilla and run it instead of your distro Firefox. Than, when Firefox will
crash (in case it will), you'll prompted to report your crash to Mozilla and
than you will be able to review your information in about:crashes.

Thanks for that tip, I will also use the Mozilla binaries.

Beside this, I am almost sure your crash isn't because of Firefox but Flash.
Adobe Flash Player is very unstable application in Linux, and sometimes
crash the browser or more dangerous stuff.

I have not found this to be the case with Flash 10, which I am very
impressed with. I am using the 32 bit version.
