RE: installing CentOS/RHEL without CD using PXE?

2008-04-01 Thread Imri Zvik
We kickstart RHEL and CentOS servers using PXE all the time.
Anything specific you want to know about the process (We pretty much do
what Oren described)?

CentOS/RHEL has the 'kickstart' over network mechanism for about a
decade :)

This is a big question, so in general:
1. The DVD contents should be available for reading on an NFS share.
2. TFTP server should supply PXE (see pxelinux), which would lead to the

correct kernel + initrd (also on the tftp), with kernel parameters "ks"
to
point on your "ks.cfg".
3. DHCP would give the server its IP and the path to the TFTP PXE boot.
("next-server" dhcp parameter).

I'm sure there's plenty of docs out there about ks..

News flash, it's alive and kicking, it's just called "Fedora Core" now.

These days "RHL" usually means RHEL, which is also alive and well.

since sadly neither are dead, I'm not sure what demise he is refering to.

I think he's refering to the all inclusive package that Red Hat sold.
It was designed for everyone to use with lots of instalation options.

At one time it was offered in Intel, Alpha, and SPARC versions.

Red Hat dropped it when they "exited" the desktop market. They offer
RHEL, which is targeted at servers (and people with money), and Fedora
which is targeted at experimenters (free).

Neither are seen as viable options for business desktop computers as
RHEL is too server oriented and Fedora is too unstable. Neither has
by themselves, or combined have all the instalation options that
RHL had.

Red Had announced they were thinking about re-entering the desktop
market, so far it has not happened. IMHO their dropping the "Core"
from Fedora 8, was an indication that it will be based on Fedora,
and probably marketed using that brand, such as "Fedora Pro" or
some similar name. Others have said it will be based on RHEL.

Geoff.

RHL, the product, is no longer updated or worked on.

Now there is RHEL, Fedora and CentOS (and a few others). I know you know
this...

Hi,

Red Hat have a network installation.

Start the installation in a text based installation and you can choose
a network installation sources (nfs, http or ftp)

You can combine it with kickstart , PXE or kickstart + PXE .

Actually, you can use disk-on-key to install a full distribution using
a "network install" (e.g. http://www.us.debian.org/distrib/netinst)

AFAIK Redhat based distributions don't have network installations. Only
PXE boot (just a copy of the right files from the first CD).

Manual here speaks of preparing a local FTP/HTTP install server, but AFAIK
you can use CentOS ftp as well.

Thanks all for the help.

I've created some "PXE server" (tftpboot, dhcp etc..) and installed
the CentOS. Everything works perfectly except the wifi, but thats
another issue.

Thanks all for your help.

installing CentOS/RHEL without CD using PXE?

2008-03-28 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,

I just got an thinkpad X31 without the ultrabase, which means - no
CDROM/DVD. I don't have an external CDROM/DVD (I have 6 internal DVD
drives on my other machines already).

So I was wondering if someone knows a way to install CentOS/RHEL (or
any other Linux distribution) without using any external DVD/CD drive,
without disk-on-key (the ISO image itself is about 3.6 GB). Any ideas?
anyone tried to install a distribution using the PXE boot?

Also, does anyone knows any Linux program which can simulate a
CDROM/DVD drive with a PXE?

Thanks,
Hetz
