There may be three partitions on the drive: 1. The hidden partition with IBM diagnostic stuff. 2. The Main windows XP partition. 3. An extended partition. The extra NTFS partitions may be in the extended partiton. This would make life very difficult. Linux will happily live in an extended partition, however, you can't boot from one. So you would have to have a real partition for linux to boot from. Dead Rat wants 100meg for it, I have never needed more than 32. Now, I have *seen* it done quite a few times, including my own TP (dual-bootable with Linux and XP Pro), here at IBM. So I claim that it is possible. ;-) Our systems guys use PartitionMagic to resize partitions and then create other partitions (e.g. for Linux). They have also resized the partitions (reducing Windows and giving more space to Linux) for me several times. So, it is possible, but two catches are: a) you need PartitionMagic or equivalent (I personally wouldn't trust fdisk with the task), and b) you should better let someone experienced do it. An additional comment: if you happen to know that one of the NTFS partitions is of a suitable size and is not used for anything (e.g. is kept for data only, and you don't have any data), why not just reformat it and install Linux on it? -- Oleg Goldshmidt | [EMAIL PROTECTED] | http://www.goldshmidt.org = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: windows XP, Linux double boot on IBM Thinkpad T30
I forgot 1 thing.. There's a hidden partition which includes IBM rescue with XP and everything, so if you want to erase it, please set things accordinly in the BIOS first. Re: windows XP, Linux double boot on IBM Thinkpad T30
I had T30 with Linux installed. It worked very well, although IRDA had few issues that needed manual configurations. I used Fedora Core 2. windows XP, Linux double boot on IBM Thinkpad T30
Hi Folks, I've got IBM Thinkpad T30 from my employer with windows XP Pro installed and hard disk already divided into 3 logical ones all with NTFS. I want to install Linux on this machine without killing windows. Does anybody here have first hand experience with this mission? For a reason I will not have second attempt so just experimenting is out of question. I am aware live CD Linuxen and will take this route if safe installation is impossible.
