You'd better not care what the drives ae called - it will all change with
devfs.

filesystem labels are to identify the filesystems so you can mount the right
ones in the right places. Even if the device names change.

SCSI F2513A and 640 Mbyte media and 2.4.0

2001-01-10 Thread John Summerfield

The 2k sector support is imperfect;-(

The media are recognised correctly (I've not tried switching between 230 Nbyte
and 640 Mbyte disks), BUT

Something can forget.

I started with a Linux disk containing my archive of RHL 5.2 rpms.

I did an rpm --verify of them all and they all checked out.
I then ejected the disk (using the eject command; this did not work correctly
with the first 2.2 kernels) and inserted an OS/2 HPFS disk.

The disk checked out with sfdisk, but I can't mount it (Linux' HPFS support
for these disks has never worked), so I ran a few commands to read data from
t, culminating with dd to make a file of its contents.

When I started dd, one of the other commands (strings, I think) was running,
so there was probably some thrashing at first

When dd finished, I could no longer read the partition table:
[root@dugite /root]# fdisk -l -b 2048 /dev/sda

Kernel 2.4.0-test12 hang

2001-01-03 Thread John Summerfield

This kernel
VERSION = 2
PATCHLEVEL = 4
SUBLEVEL = 0
EXTRAVERSION = -test12

Sometimes locks solid (alt-sysrq doesn't work), sometimes less so (alt-sysrq
does work) but more often reboots when a user (me with my usual account, me
with an alternate little-user account) logs in and starts XFree, or logs in
through kdm.

I've reverted to an earlier build (vmlinuz.old) of the same kernel and all is
well again.

I don't have the old configuration file (.config) to compare with; the config
that fails follows at the end of this description.

What I changed is a few network options; I'm setting up to play with uml and
chose options to allow ethertap and TUN. I also turned on the netfilter stuff,
and forwarding/masq

My video adaptor is i740-based, the motherboard an ASUS P2L97-S with BIOS 1010
beta 3 (I have been thinking of replacing my PII-233 with a Celeron, but
haven't done so).

System lockup in 2.4.0-test12; loop dev & ext2 suspect

2000-12-16 Thread John Summerfield

I'm setting up a filesystem for user-mode linux, but uml is not directly
involved.

I have a script (enhanced version of some supplied with uml) which is best run
as root.

It creats a 100 Mbyte file (dd from /dev/zero) and makes a filesystem (mke2fs).

It then mounts the filesystem, and proceeds to populate it using rpm to pull
packages from my CD (scsi cd writer, mounted via autofs); it puts a few
essential ones first (filesystem, bash, setup and a couple of others) and then
a great heap at once.

The system has locked up three times at this point; I was wondering about the
SCSI for a while.

However, the fourth time it locked was during an "rpm --rebuild"

A common feature of each time is that the filesystem on the loop device was
getting a hammering.

It's characteristic of this lockup that I can ping the box, it does I/O etc. I
even found that it logged some information connected with my efforts with
system-request. I could see nothing relevant to the problem.

I tried to ssh into the box from across the LAN; the effort was logged as
successful.

What I cannot do is run programs. Although the log said ssh was successful, I
couldn't see that from my terminal. I mostly can't run programs - I found out
that the script was stuck in "rpm --rebuilddb" using the ps command; maybe it
was cached?

In the STAT column, it showd "D" and nothing I could do with the KILL command
would get id of it.

I've had XFree lock solid (I use GNOME); the last time I created the problem
from a VC. Well, nearly solid - I was able to get out of it with ctrl-alt-F1
so I could do things from a VC.

I have on each occasion been able to reboot using the sysrq feature.

Software versions:

[summer@possum summer]$ rpm -q mount e2fsprogs losetup
mount-2.10f-1
e2fsprogs-1.19-0
losetup-2.9u-4
[summer@possum summer]$

I'm running Red Hat Linux 6.2.

DPMS kicks in at the wrong time

2000-12-13 Thread John Summerfield

(I'm pretty sure) 2.1 days.

Whenever I try frame buffer support, this is what happens:
1) I can boot up with the logo, lots of characters across the screen, and
Linux happily writing on my console.

2) I can switch to a graphics display, either with KDM/GDM/XDM, or by logging
in and starting X.
3) When I then switch back to a virtual console, the screen blanks and
switches to power-saving mode.

Neither works. I'm using gcc 2.95-3 on RHL 6.2

In desperation, I removed the source tree and started afresh from test1.

These are the commands I used:

[summer@possum src]$ cat reinstall
#!/bin/bash
set -ex
cd /usr/src
rm -rf linux
tar Ixf /u03/kernels/patches/linux-2.4.0-test1.tar.bz2
dir -1rt `find /u03/kernels/patches/ -name patch-2.4.0-t\*.gz -newer
/u03/kernels/patches/patch-2.4.0-test1.gz` | xargs --max-lines=1 gzip -dc |
patch -p0
find linux -name \*.rej
cd linux
make mrproper
cp /u03/kernels/configs/possum-2.4.0-test11.config .config
make dep bzImage modules

and it still did not build.

In a hunch, i tried this:

set -ex
cd /usr/src
rm -rf linux
tar Ixf /u03/kernels/patches/linux-2.4.0-test1.tar.bz2
dir -1rt `find /u03/kernels/patches/ -name patch-2.4.0-t\*.gz -newer
/u03/kernels/patches/patch-2.4.0-test1.gz` | xargs --max-lines=1 gzip -dc |
patch -p0
find linux -name \*.rej
cd linux
make mrproper
cp /u03/kernels/configs/possum-2.4.0-test11.config .config
make oldconfig dep bzImage modules

and the oldconfig resulting in me bing asked three questions (and not those
new in test11).

The result builds.

It seems to me that some of the various "make *config" options have the
ability to create defective configurations in some circumstances.

I'm off to enjoy my new kernel now;-)

Did you try it in 2.2.17? If it's fixed already, nobody will be very
