Hello,

I won't be harsh but google is your best friend and first source for it.

please take a look at:

http://linuxdevices.com/articles/AT3855888078.html

They have a good guide and what should need attention in migrating to Kernel 2.6
They also have related articles for drivers in Kernel 2.6,NPTL and such.

Re: 2.6.13-mm2

2005-09-08 Thread Michael Thonke

Hello Andrew,

I found a problem regarding to multi device support (Linux software Raid).

The problem first appears now in 2.6.13-mm2, that the kernel didn't initialize
the md devices.

2.6.13-mm1 works very well, and everything is okay.

Also one strange thing I found was that my SATA devices were initialized
a-sync/disordered e.g

SATA1 with one hdd then something like USB and IPv4 and such and at least
SATA3: with 2nd hdd.
That I've never seen this order init order before. Seems to be mixed all around.

I tried irqpoll, pci=routeirq with no success.

I can't provide some logs, because I can't grep the dmesg since it doesn't boot.

There are changes in libata driver for sata_nv? Or md driver changes that cause
that?

Thanks

Best regards

There may be a BIOS problem, but there is no problem with the
controller using SATA II drives.

Can you boot with another drive, and then send the output requested
above?

Sorry, but I can't provide them, because I changed the VIA chipset based
mainboard against a NForce4 Ultra chipset mainboard.

But on heise.de they also pointed out that it's VIA's bug. Not the
harddrives one, they have some but this not apply on VIA. Samsung act
and updated the firmware of their drives for compatibility reasons.

And the work-around is to jumper the hdd as SATA I hdd. The problem was,
that my system to this time was not bootable with my Samsungs Hd160JJ
and VIA VT8237. Nos they fix it with a new Chipset the VT8327R...where
we don't need a work-around.

Mine does too. Asus A8V Deluxe. No problems so far. Everything on the
board I have tried just works.

AMD X2 DualCore?

Can't say my A7N8X-E Deluxe has any real issues either. I may only get
ac97 audio level out of the nifty DSP, but I hardly use sound on the
system anyhow, so I don't mind. forcedeth driver works for networking,
sil3112a sata works with WD drives no problem, nvidia ide controller
seems to work fine with dvd drives, firewire works, yukon sk98lin works

Yes, Marvell, Silicon Image no problem as they provide OpenSource drivers.
On a normal setup is nearly everything okay.

I hold up a hardware testlab to find b** *features* the specification
don't show/hold.

Things that can go scary for production usage - that's my job.

too, usb is fine. No complaints from me.

USB works also great for all chipsets :-)

What does ASUS say about this? You can't just plug a new processor
into an old motherboard and expect it to work, generally.

Hello Jeff,

No they don't like AMD x2 DualCore cpus. ASUS is not interesseted in the

That's with the "thermal", "processor" and "fan" modules loaded (and a

I cannot read my CPU temperature at all? (But I thought the whole
_point_ of ACPI was that it was an abstraction away from the hardware:
so why is there such a thing as "Asus" ACPI?) Or else, what am I
doing wrong?

Hello David,

you will have no luck. I also have this Mainboard in my test rig.

The ASUS P5WD2 also has some **EXECUTABLE CODE*** in ACPI Table that

did you read the message at bugzilla? A .config file of the kernel
would be appropriate to reproduce the failure you've got. Else it

Re: 2.6.13-rc4-mm1

2005-07-31 Thread Michael Thonke

Hello Andrew,

the ACPI bug or the problems with 2.6.13-rc3-mm[2,3] gone.
The system boots now noiseless, except on problem with USB.

If my Prolific USB-Serialadapter plugged in on reboot
the ehci_hcd driver complains about a Hand-off bug in Bios.

I wonder about this because all other USB devices working without this
message on boot.

USB Mouse,Keyboard and USB Storage and all mixed from USB 1.1 and 2.

When I rebooted without plugged Prolific Adapter and plug them in the

the kernel prints this message.

Hello Tobias,

did you read the message at bugzilla? A .config file of the kernel
would be appropriate to reproduce the failure you've got. Else it
is like looking for a needle in a haystack, for the developers.

This looks like a nasty case where some executable code in the table is
attempting to access a SystemMemory operation region before any OpRegion
handlers are initialized.

We certainly want to see the output of acpidump to attempt to diagnose
and/or reproduce the problem.

Sorry for double post.

With this mail I hand over the acpidump output with the pmtools
Andrew pointed me to.

And a dmesg output with CONFIG_KALLSYMS=y.

I attached them in bz2 format, because of the length.

I hope we find the problem.

The problem is new because 2.6.13-rc3[-mm1,mm2] work without any problems.

OK. Please generate the full dmesg output for -mm2 and for -mm3 and run
`diff -u dmesg.mm2 dmesg.mm3' and send it? And keep those files because we
may end up needing to add them to an acpi bugzilla entry ;)

Well I did a little mistake..it only worked correctly up to
2.6.13-rc3-mm1 but this dmesg output I have.

Well as I save mm[2,3] are unable to setup the correct IRQs for the
devices..and please note that 2.6.13-rc3-mm3 only booted with irqpoll so
its in the dmesg output "dmesg.mm3"
Normaly the IRQ routed to something about 1xx now they are 1-21?! Caused
by irqpoll?

Are these problems only present in -mm kernels? Does 2.6.13-rc4 work OK?

I'm sorry to say that, Yes.

I finially compiled a fresh 2.6.13-rc4-git1 kernel with ck-patch and
Gregh-kh patches.

With this kernel non of the problems I had with mm-kernel are present.
Here is everthing just perfect..now
I attached a dmesg output for review :-)

The Oops on probing snd-hda-intel gone. It works now ... Mozart rocks :-)
I look at the CVS tree of Alsa later.

I finialy converted my reiser4 root to reiser 3.6.

Where I can get acpidumb or what it is called?

Odd trace. Do you have CONFIG_KALLSYMS enabled? If not, please turn it on.

Well it looks like ACPI committed suicide, so there's probably not much
point looking at the other things until that gets addressed.

Would you have time to raise a kernel bugzilla entry for this? Raise it
against the ACPI AML interpreter, version 20050708 and mention the above

The problem is new because 2.6.13-rc3[-mm1,mm2] work without any problems.

OK. Please generate the full dmesg output for -mm2 and for -mm3 and run
`diff -u dmesg.mm2 dmesg.mm3' and send it? And keep those files because we
may end up needing to add them to an acpi bugzilla entry ;)

Well I did a little mistake..it only worked correctly up to
2.6.13-rc3-mm1 but this dmesg output I have.

Well as I save mm[2,3] are unable to setup the correct IRQs for the
devices..and please note that 2.6.13-rc3-mm3 only booted with irqpoll so
its in the dmesg output dmesg.mm3

Okay, i will do so ... what else we need to back that out.

Mh I tried but my system freezes on boot then. And screen leaves blank.

Oh geeze.

Well it looks like ACPI committed suicide, so there's probably not much
point looking at the other things until that gets addressed.

Would you have time to raise a kernel bugzilla entry for this? Raise it
against the ACPI AML interpreter, version 20050708 and mention the above
failure. The output of acpidump (from
ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/lenb/acpi/utils/pmtools-20050727.tar.gz)
will probably be asked for.

Thanks.

This looks like a nasty case where some executable code in the table is
attempting to access a SystemMemory operation region before any OpRegion

We certainly want to see the output of acpidump to attempt to diagnose
and/or reproduce the problem.

Sorry for double post.

With this mail I hand over the acpidump output with the pmtools
Andrew pointed me to.

And a dmesg output with CONFIG_KALLSYMS=y.

I attached them in bz2 format, because of the length.

I hope we find the problem.

2005-07-28 Thread Michael Thonke

Hello Andrew,

here again I have two problems. With 2.6.13-rc3-mm3 I have problems
using my SATA drives on Intel ICH6.
The kernel can't route there IRQs or can't discover them. the option
irqpoll got them to work now.

The problem is new because 2.6.13-rc3[-mm1,mm2] work without any problems.

The SATA drives are Samsung HD160JJ SATAII. The mainboard I use is a
ASUS P4GPL-X.

Second one is about Intel HD-Codec (snd-hda-intel) on modprobe when
loading the module it gives me

That's due to the code using `#if CONFIG_xx' instead of `#ifdef'.

Re: 2.6.13-rc3-mm3

2005-07-28 Thread Michael Thonke

Hello Andrew,

here again I have two problems. With 2.6.13-rc3-mm3 I have problems
using my SATA drives on Intel ICH6.
The kernel can't route there IRQs or can't discover them. the option
irqpoll got them to work now.

The problem is new because 2.6.13-rc3[-mm1,mm2] work without any problems.

The SATA drives are Samsung HD160JJ SATAII. The mainboard I use is a
ASUS P4GPL-X.

Second one is about Intel HD-Codec (snd-hda-intel) on modprobe when
loading the module it gives me

Support for Silicon Image 3132 SATA II Controller

2005-07-21 Thread Michael Thonke
Hello,

I've got a new Silicon Image 3132 SATA II host-controller, this one is
designed along the SATA (II) specification - (Hot-Plug,NCQ,3GB/s
transfer). This controller is linked to the pci-express bus. I guess
it operate like the 3124 controller with some addition :-) On the
Silicon Image website I found some papers for this controller and his
architecture. It can be found here
http://www.siliconimage.com/products/product.aspx?id=32=1

I can provide a pci-ids for some specific boards if needed...I found
this controller on some new motherboards Gigabyte's 955X Royal, ABIT
AW8,ECS PF88 Extreme, TUL,Foxconn and maybe others coming.

Is it possible to implement this controller to libata: sata_sil
driver? I also would spend some time to test the driver.

Thanks for help and assistence

Hello Andrew,

along the 2.6.12-rcX-mmX PCI-Express is not usable at all with
mm-patchsets. I posted some days ago the problem taht
the IRQs get not regonized by the kernel also with pci=routeirq nothing
helped.
The problem still the same and some new problems now with 2.6.12-rc2-mm2
in addition.

This computer has an Intel Pentium 4 630 with HT,EIST and EMT64 enabled.
In 2.6.12-rc2 everything works perfect.
So I post my dmesg output maybe you can see some interesting things
there. I hope you'll find the issue or bug..whatever hope that
its possible to sort the problems out.

Thanks in Advanced

Now I post the 2.6.12-rc2-mm2 and after that the 2.6.12-rc2 vanilla

2.6.12-rc1-bk does not boot x86_64

2005-04-03 Thread Michael Thonke
Hello,

I tried the recent 2.6.12-rc1-bk5 snapshot from kernel.org.
When I want to boot my x86_64 system only a green line appears on screen.
The config is the same as in 2.6.12-rc1-bk4 which works flawlessly on my
system.

I only saw the message that CPU0 and CPU1 where initialized. And then
there was
Brinnging up CPUs and it stopped.

Its an Intel Pentium4 640 with (EMT64,HT,EIST,CIE enabled).
The graphic card is an Nvidia 6600GT PCIe device.

Thanks

Best regards

Hello Jacek,
I finially got it working :-) my PCI-Express devices working now...
I grabbed the last bk-snapshot from kernel.org 2.6.12-rc1-bk3 and et volia
everything except the Marvell Yokon PCI-E device working.
I hope Andrew will look into the mm-line to find the bug?

Unusable/non working PCI-Express on Intel 925XE Chipset since 2.6.12-rc1[mm1-4]

2005-03-31 Thread Michael Thonke
Hello,
since the first version of 2.6.12-rc1 and mm[1-4] kernel I can't use any
of my PCI-Express devices
that work with all 2.6.11.[1-6] kernels. Its a real odd right now.

I have 25 computers with an Intel 925XE Chipset and Intel 6xx CPU. It
does not metter which vendor I choose the problem spread all over.I
tried to boot with pci=routeicq but it did not help to get one device
working ith 2.6.12-rc1-xx kernel. As I mentioned before I tested it with
over 25 computer (with ASUS,ABIT,MSI etc.) no luck. Its an 64bit system
[EMT64] and SMP/SMT enabled and preempt.

My first look was on PCI Routingtable and what I found in difference to
2.6.11.x working kernel is that:
Here I print the posssible bug/problem, lspci and dmesg output from kernel.

So far
Thanks in advance and best regards
