By which I mean, an implementation of "ftp" maintained and released
by the FSF.

$ lftp ftp.gnu.org/gnu/ftp
cd: Access failed: 550 /gnu/ftp: No such file or directory

(lftp is a very nice, GPLed ftp client, but it does not come from
the FSF, and it does not behave like the traditional "ftp" program.)

That's odd. Then why can I boot it off the secondary master drive if I disable
the primary via BIOS? It's still on the IDE1 cable.

Looks like something to try though! Thanks.

I just downloaded Netscopae 4.76 and installed it.
How do I uninstall the older version? Netscape 4.75?
I want to reclaim some hard drive space by removing version 4.75.
And also, how can I make 4.76 launch when I click on the Netscape icon
on the command bar?

This is all bullshit!

If you use ONLY partition magic to do the partitioning you will
have no problem. I have partitioned a lot of hard disks and not
once I have ever had partition magic fuck up on my systems.
I had two problems related to partioning in the past couple of years
1- When Corel Linux got installed it blew my partition table and neither
OS/2 nor partiton magic were able to read, I don't remember the error
number, perhaps 104 or 105. It turned out that Corel seemed to have
written over a partition boundary. I did the hard fix, I booted from diskette
under SuSE and saved my dat onto another hard disk, I then proceeded
to recreate a dos partition table and reinstall OS/2 as well as SuSE Linux.
2-Win NT 4.0 was installed onto the first partition of around 2G on an
8G partition (1027 cylinders in LBA).
When running NT fdisk it put his mark which turned out that that mark was
the zapping of a 3G linux partition sitting on the end of the drive.
I wiped winblows NT and used the CD as a coaster.
The partition table was blown.

Please stop the nonsense about PM. It may not be a perfect software package
but by experience I found it to be one of the very best such software on
the market as it supports several operation systems. Unlike the fdisk of
Linux I don't have any weird surprises with OS/2 or DOS. I can do basically
what I want with PM.

Not sure exactly what you are trying to do and whether it is on a tcp/ip
connection. But if you type 'perldoc perlipc' in any terminal, it will
give you examples of sockets, pipes and fifos for inter process
communication (ipc).

Since your remote is directly a printer, you shouldn't write anything in
remote queue. This is used when you print on a print server, i-e a
computer which run the print daemon and has a printer attached to it.

I assume you're booting with lilo. Try booting it like this
"linux root=/dev/hdxx" where xx is the drive and partition
of your root ("/") filesystem. Example hda3, a=first IDE drive,
third partition. If that doesn't work take note of the boot
up messages and look for the phrase "VFS: Mounted root (ext2
filesystem) readonly." and anything around that.

You can back scroll using the left hand shift and page up keys.

Does anyone know of any software, either Linux native or something
that will compile on Linux, for slowing down music? Preferably,
slowing down the music on an audio CD, but not changing the pitch of
the music (for learning songs). Free software is, of course, most
preferable!

Thanks,

Unless you specified otherwise, you would be using the bash
shell. You set a variable by
VARNAME=whatever
and then you export it with
export VARNAME
so it becomes part of the environment. (This is the same as
what was done in the original Bourne shell.) You can do both
at once with
export VARNAME=whatever

Although setenv doesn't exist in bash, printenv does and
will list all your environmental variables, or if you give
it an argument, the value of one variable.

If you want to use setenv, you might consider changing your
shell to tcsh, for example.

Here is a cute one for Linux.

UNIX Airways

Everyone brings one piece of the plane along when they come
to the airport. They all go out on the runway and put the
plane together piece by piece, arguing non-stop about what
kind of plane they are supposed to be building.

Air DOS

Everybody pushes the airplane until it glides, then they jump
on and let the plane coast until it hits the ground again.
Then they push again, jump on again, and so on ...

Mac Airlines

All the stewards, captains, baggage handlers, and ticket agents
look and act exactly the same. Every time you ask questions
about details, you are gently but firmly told that you don't
need to know, don't want to know, and everything will be done
for you without your ever having to know, so just shut up.

Windows Air

The terminal is pretty and colorful, with friendly stewards,
easy baggage check and boarding, and a smooth take-off. After
about 10 minutes in the air, the plane explodes with no warning
wha

I have just upgraded from Red Hat 5.2 to version 6.0 (intel). I am
having a few problems. One of them is that I can no longer print to my
printer. When I try to do so, I get the following error message:

[cribari@edgeworth texfiles]$ lpr test.ps
lpr: connect: Connection refused
jobs queued, but cannot start daemon.
[cribari@edgeworth texfiles]$

Any hints/suggestions/tips? Thanks. FC.

PS: Since my connection to usenet news groups is rather unstable,
replies by e-mail (in addition to posting) are especially appreciated.

That's only partially true; it exercises CPU, RAM, HD, ... . Since
my initial reply I've found the following in SuSE's Linux 6.1 manual:

A very popular test for hardware and software is to compile the
kernel with make -j. You will need quite a lot of RAM (more
than 100MB). This launches a compiler for each source file.

I don't think there is anything like AMI-DIAGNOSTICS for Linux, and
that is a DOS program. If the hardware works under DOS it should
work under any OS. That being said: there is no validation suite for
DOS/Win, Linux, ... .

Do you have 'st' (SCSI Tape) support either compiled-in or as a
loadable module. Check it with 'lsmod'.

Also, you can use 'script' to capture output to a file then edit and
post it. Include 'dmesg', 'lsmod', exact error message give, ... .

FreeBSD already runs linux binaries. As executable formats get
hammered out, the converse will probably become true.

The UNIX would continues to inch towards portable executable formats.

Subject: Is linux 64-bit ready already?

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've been trying to determine which platforms will support the 64-bit version of
MapleV (a commercial software package for carrying out symbolic and graphical
mathematical calculations), since the 32-bit versions can not handle for example a
generic 40th degree polynomial in 4 variables (that requires a coefficient list with
more than 2^16 -1 entries).

I posted to sci.math.symbolic with this question and learned the following. If you
install Red Hat linux 4.2 on an alpha system, and then install MapleV for linux
it appears to be 64 bit (visit http://130.15.26.62/NewDemo/frame.html to see
examples of tensor calculations in General Relativity that were carried out in this
fashion). In fact, if you give the Maple command
   > kernelopts(wordsize)
it will kick back 64 (as opposed to 32 on a intel box).

What's darn strange is that, as far as I can tell, the binary distribution of MapleV
for linux is the same for both alpha and i386 platforms.

How could this be? Is it possible that executable compiled for linux are 64-bit
ready in this sense? Or is this just a fluke? (One could perhaps explain away the
second example, if kernelopts(wordsize) justs polls the operating system, but
nevertheless, it does seem that Maple on an linux/alpha machine is capable
carrying out calculations requiring a larger word size than is available on a
linux/intel machine).

Thanks in advance, Birne Binegar

(BTW, MapleSoft would neither confirm or deny the above, they simply say that
YMMV but Digital Unix is the only platform for which *they* support a 64 bit version
of Maple).

It has nothing to do with Linux but the Unix process model, see Bach
for more (might be the best one). A zombie actually is not a process
anyway, it is *just* an entry in the process table. While it is
possible to kill a system that way I never encountered that case in
practice, even on machines with 6 - 12 months uptime ... the longest
time without a powerfailure so far 8)

Cheers,
Juergen
