Subject: Linux script question.
Date: Tue, 14 Sep 1999 10:07:53 +

Hello!

I have just written a script that make my comp. auto dialup to internet
and sendmail and disconnect.
The script:
dip dialup
hold
dip -k

The hold program is a program that copying file many time to let
sendmail have enough time to send E-mail
But u know, Always copying file make my system become very busy and very
slow, so I want to see is there are any subsitutes that no need so much
system resources and can still make my script work.

Sorry for my poor English & presentation.

Reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED], thank you!

I have a LinkSys 10/100 on an HP Pavillion and downloaded the
latest tulip driver from LinkSys. However, this did NOT work, I
had to use the one that comes with the card (which is a bit
older).

Also: I had to swap graphics and network card (the network card
has to be the first one) to get it working...

Subject: Using Proxy Server for caching
Date: Tue, 14 Sep 1999 11:30:41 GMT

Hello forum,
I going to set up a linux box as a proxy server, between my ISP and a
local network. Due to the slow connection to the ISP I would like to
have a caching system for the clients within the local network.
I know that a proxy server can be used for caching. Do you have any
recommendations, regarding to a special product, or can I use just every
proxy server, like SOCKS etc., which are available.
Is there maybe a smarter solution for solving my problem?

Thanks for any comments

Carl

Hi!

My linux (Redhat 6.0, kernel 2.2.3) refreshes the ARP table
every 6 to 10 minutes (or something like that).
I know it's possible to disable it by modifying kernel sources.
But which kernel source file holds the value for ARP refresh?

Linux to win98 network problems (Randall Debold)

From: Randall Debold <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Linux to win98 network problems

I'm having difficulties getting my win98 and nt40 server machines
to see my linux box. The linux box has no trouble see and accessing
the win98 and nt40 machine using "smbclient". But when I try to access
the linux box using network neighborhood by clicking on the linux icon
I keep getting the error:
"\\Linux is not accessible."
"The computer or sharename could not be found."
"Make sure you typed it correctly and try again."

The Win98 and Nt40 machines can see and access each other's shares.
The linux machine can see and access all computers and shares.
The win98 and nt40 cannot access the linux shares, however
the linux box shows up under network neighborhood for both
machines.

Here are the network configs and files on the win98 machine:

The LAN consists of 3 machines:
1) Linux server - 192.168.1.254
2) Win98 machine - 192.168.1.2
3) NT server 4.0 sp3 - 192.168.1.3
The LAN is wired together with Linsys 10/100 cards to a
Linksys 4 port hub. Each machine can ping the other.

You will want to look at ipchains. The stock RH 6.0 supports it (i.e.
no kernel recompile required). Look at this part of the IP Masquerade
Mini-HOWTO:
http://metalab.unc.edu/linux/HOWTO/mini/IP-Masquerade-3.html#ss3.4

Its all that really concerns you at this point.

XFree86 is an implementation of XWindows for Intel processors. If you
installed Gnome or KDE as they came from the RH CD, they work great,
IMHO.

I think it is KDE's ppp that has confused people. Maybe Gnome has one
too. I just use Network COnfigurator from the control-panel. It works
pretty well.

Yes. init 3 at the prompt (as root).

You probably need to edit /etc/rc.d/rc.local and add two lines at the
end (explained in the above mini HOWTO link.

No problem.

Hope this helps,

Subject: Wyse Terminals on Linux Network
Date: Fri, 18 Jun 1999 22:51:40 GMT

I have a small LAN at home witht he primary file server running Windows
NT, 4 client W98 machines and 2 linux servers, one running RH 5.1 the
other i've just installed RH 6.0. I have a WYSE 150 terminal laying
around that i'd like to get hooked up. My question is, do I need to be
running some type of terminal server software on one of the linux
machines?? and if so if i could get a location, or at least a name to
get me headed in the right direction. Also another question. Right now
my NT box is running Proxy 2.0. I'd like to use Linux as my proxy
server. I've heard alot of talk about IP Masquerade, but haven't been
able to actually locate the source. Can anyone point me in the right
direction. I"ve heard 6.0 comes with it, but i can't seem to find it.
Thanks in advance

Jeff

Well, I'm not sure if they are available. I am using a Windows box to
create
the web site with HotMetal Pro. I don't know if a WYSIWYG editor in Linux.
As for Internet Explorer, I don't know if there is one for Linux, but there
is one
for Solaris. I use Netscape on Linux, but this web site (like most out
there)
will be accessed from Windows machines, as well as UNIX-based
machines. I need to make sure it works for all systems and browsers.

> why do you post to so many Linux groups?

Because I believe my problem is with Linux/Apache. I'm SURE that it's my
fault, but the Linux groups are where I will find my answers.
