osabmcutil9g i386 4.3-0 breaking yum update

2010-11-24 Thread Steve Jenkins
Just did a yum update on a PE1850 running CentOS 5.5.

It showed that it wanted to update (among other things) the following
from dell-omsa-indep:

osabmcutil9g i386 4.3-0

I said "yes." Download went fine, but on the install I got:

--
warning: rpmts_HdrFromFdno: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID
c4eb7218
dell-omsa-indep/gpgkey
| 1.5 kB 00:00
dell-omsa-indep/gpgkey
| 1.4 kB 00:00

Public key for osabmcutil9g-RHEL-4.3-0.i386.rpm is not installed
--

Then it just dumped me back in the shell. I went into the dell repo file
in /etc/yum.repos.d/ and turned both repos in there to "enabled=0" and
then re-ran yum to update the other stuff.

Any ideas why this is breaking all of a sudden?

Thanks,

SJ

PE sc420, corrupted video, need nomodeset, kernels after 2.6.33.3

2010-11-24 Thread Robert Terzi
FYI,

I've started seeing corrupt, unusable video modes on a
Dell PowerEdge sc420 with recent kernels (after 2.6.33).
The hardware is the on-board intel E7221, which uses the i915
video driver. The work around is to append 'nomodeset' to
the kernel boot line. Also remove any vga=xxx parameters.

Fedora 13, (FC13), kernel 2.6.33.3 is OK,
Fedora 14, (FC14), kernel 2.6.35.45 needs nomodeset.

If you are booting Fedora 14 installer or Live CD, choose
the boot option with "Basic Video" since this will add
the nomodeset parameter as well as set xdriver=vesa.

I was not successful in booting the Mandriva 2010.1 installer
(kernel 2.6.33.7) at all. The Mandriva graphical boot has a
bug that always adds a set vga mode 'vga=xxx' which will cause
the video problems. Appending nomodeset after the vga= has
no effect so there is no way to boot the distributed install
media for Mandriva 2010.1.

Hope This Helps (someone else)

OMSA 6.3 issue

2010-11-24 Thread Steve Thompson
Many PE systems, 32 and 64 bit, running CentOS 5.5 and OMSA 6.1 and
6.3.

With OMSA 6.1, an entry such as this in the /etc/omarolemap file:

+omadmin * Administrator

works to give members of the omadmin group Administrator access (group
members come from LDAP). With OMSA 6.3, a similar entry in the
/opt/dell/srvadmin/etc/omarolemap file no longer has the same effect; it
appears to be ignored. This is not what the comments in this file claim.
Known issue?

Hi Spike

good info, thanks.

That just about rules OEL out of the equation if we stick with Dell
hardware then unfortunately.
We cannot run Oracle on an unsupported hardware/OS combination.

OK, thanks for the clarification - it hadn't been clear from what I'd
previously read that the 2.6.32 kernel option was an optional
opt-in-only thing..

We run OEL 5.x all the time around here, on Dell I/T servers. Have done so
successfully for yrs.

There are two places where Dell PG support for OEL5.x breaks.

1. the OMSA install. The default OMSA installer script does not recognize
OEL5.x as a RHEL5.x clone. It's a trivial one-line hack to the OMSA install
script to have it think the /etc/redhat-release contents is plain-jane RHEL5.x.
Since OEL5.x is binary compatible, then OMSA installs and operates fine.

2. BIOS updates on certain 11th gen server models (R710, M710, M610's).

That is, the following cmd:
  yum -y install firmware-addon-dell dell_ft_install

successfully upgrades all firmware on these 11th gen models (PERC, CMC, ESM,
etc). Except for the system BIOS. Again, same problem. Does not recognize
OEL 5.x as a RHEL5.x clone. You can reboot the server and flash the f/w from a
USB key. That's probably the simplest way.

BTW, this second problem is *not* a firmware-addon-dell or dell_ft_install RPM
problem. Rather, it's the underlying DUP utilities that these RPMs call that
are broken, they don't recognize OEL5.x as a valid OS. We are actively working
with Dell PG to resolve.

That said, are you just starting on OEL 5.x? If so, you may want to think
about your long-term roadmap with OEL. Particularly, focus on what 3rd party
apps you're needing. Starting with RHEL6, Oracle will no longer be
binary-compatible with RH. So long-term, understandably I'd expect Dell PG and
other 3rd party tools to break, if they're expecting RHEL6.

If the 3rd party apps do not contain kernel modules, newer OEL versions will
probably spoof RHEL 5.5 close enough. So you can probably trivially fix as
above. If your 3rd party apps contain kernel modules, verify that vendor is
committed to supporting Oracle's new fork -- UEK (unbreakable enterprise
kernel).

Hi Wayne

thanks for your detailed reply, I agree with your sentiments however our
only option is for 100% fully documented support.
We are an Oracle house running Oracle Ebusiness Suite for many public
sector services and all hardware/software combinations have to be fully
certified and compatible with each other.

If Dell don't certify OEL (we wouldn't expect to get OS support from
Dell for OEL, but we need OEL to be certified on Dell hardware) then we
either stay with RHEL or find out what hardware is certified with OEL.

Chances are we'll just stay with RHEL however.

Thanks again,
Nick.

RE: Oracle Enterprise Linux

2010-11-24 Thread Wayne_Weilnau
Nick,
I had done an investigation on what it would taken for OpenManage to officially
support OEL. Our determination was that it would take little to no code
changes. The real effort would be additional testing on the distributions,
support channels, etc. Several releases ago (6.1?) we removed code that
attempted to prevent customers from using OM on OEL, Cent, or any of the
distributions that are not officially supported. OpenManage on OEL is not
"officially" supported. But as pointed out by others, OEL is compatible with
RHEL. There are other customers who are running various OM components on OEL,
but I do not have a definitive list of the specific components.

Sorry that I could not give you feedback that was not any less "vague" than the
other feedback you had received. If you are worried about support, I would
expect that most issues you encounter on OEL will also be present on RHEL. If
you run into issues on OEL, reproduce it on RHEL, then take it to tech support.

Thanks for your responses folks, but 'should be' and 'almost the same'
etc isn't good enough for us.
The press release pointed to by Tim is also pretty vague.

As no one from Dell has answered the question I'll raise a support call
about it and update this mailing list with the results of that.

Actually, AFAIK, OEL5 remains at kernel 2.6.18 even in update 5.

However, if you choose to use the new Oracle Unbreakable Kernel - a separate
channel in ULN - you will get a much newer kernel based on 2.6.32 with specific
changes related to infiniband, SSD storage and more efficient "RPC" calls
(SPD?).

Everything is still supposed to run as-is and binary compat with RedHat remains.

Err, actually since the latest OEL 5 release uses the 2.6.32 kernel
(same as RHEL6), but the userspace is largely RHEL5, you are likely to
hit some packaging/repository issues when using the Dell RHEL6 on it,
I'd guess.

http://lwn.net/Articles/406242/

... but since Dell support both RHEL5, and RHEL6, I would have thought
things will largely work. There is also some sort of agreement between
Dell / Oracle, however it looks like you need to go to Oracle for the
actual support, and it doesn't indicated which servers are supported:

It's not "supported" AFAIK, but since it's essentially a
rebuilt-from-source Redhat Enterprise Linux with some kernel performance
tweaks - you are unlikely to see any issues with OEL that you won't also
see when running RHEL, CentOS etc. on Dell hardware.
