Searching for Linux audio tools I found a very smart site by the 
Stanford University Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustic:

http://ccrma-www.stanford.edu/planetccrma/software/planetccrma.html

Although they are of course mainly focused on audio, they also deal with 
general optimization strategies for multimedia on Linux (low latency), 
and several video editing tools are mentioned, packed as RH rpms, and 
offered for download.

That was me.  Thanks for the URL.  Unfortunately, its primarily focused 
on IEEE1394 streaming video, and i'm working with a webcam (MPEG or AVI) 
videos.
