Interesting! Do you think you would be able to get a couple of packet
captures so I can see what USB data is transferred when you use the pen vs an
eraser?

There are notes about how to see the USB data in the kernel docs[1] so if
you're able to get this working let me know and I'll tell you what to look for.

You need to get it to the point (perhaps with grep) where you are only seeing
USB events when you do something with the tablet. You should see one or two
when you press the tablet's buttons, and hundreds when you move the pen around.

Cheers,
Adam.

Since I had to reverse engineer the USB protocol for this tablet, I can say
with 100% certainly that no USB data is transferred when this not-an-eraser is
moved or pressed against the screen.

There's also a LED on the screen which lights up when the stylus tip makes
physical contact with the screen or the hardware buttons are pressed, and it
doesn't light up when the not-an-eraser is used.

Cheers,
Adam.

As another owner of a DTI-520, my stylus appears to be different from
Adam's stylus. The eraser end does look like an eraser (and it does
wiggle a bit), and when I press it against the tablet, the LED on the
tablet flashes as if the tablet is reacting to it (in a similar way that
the LED flashes when the "pencil" part of the stylus is pressed against
the tablet).

So I think that indicates that the DTI-520 *does* work with both a pointer
and an eraser.

Ah, the eyelet mounted on the side of the "eraser" rather than on the
end? I hadn't thought of that, I interpreted it as the eraser's end.

That would work on the BambooPT stylus eraser too but I'd be concerned
about the extra wear and tear with a cord attached even though it's
mobility is very limited. Would much prefer the eyelet on the barrel.

Actually, that doesn't necessarily mean anything. For example, I've
got a DTU-2231 with a pen designated "UP-818E" whose eraser end has an
eyelet and near-zero (physical) pressure response. However, the eraser
end moves the cursor on screen and is pressure-sensitive in
applications.

That said, if the eraser end doesn't move around the cursor, there's a
very good chance that there's no eraser. Examining a dump of the USB
data would let you be "sure" (there shouldn't *be* a dump if there's
no eraser ;)), but that's probably overkill ;)

Right, no eraser. The lanyard eyelet clinches that. The one in my
tablet PC's stylus is below the eraser.

You'd have to find and buy a compatible stylus that has an eraser.

We basically support two versions of Wacom pen protocols here, V4 and
V5. V5 devices are Intuos and Cintiq V5 series, which report tool IDs
and serial numbers. All the other pen devices are V4, such as
Graphire, Bamboo, and DTI/DTF/ISDV4...

Your tool most likely does not have an eraser. Most DTI/DTF tools do
not have eraser out of box.

The amount of movement as the eraser (what would be the rubber)
depresses into the stylus barrel varies by stylus model. With one
stylus I have it slides in a noticeable distance but my BambooPT
stylus' eraser hardly slides in. But it does wiggle a bit.

Guess it depends on how the transducer is set up.

eraser tip move when you press? If not, your pen does not have an

This is the same as Graphires. Even if the pen included in the box

Unfortunately I've got no way of knowing, as I only have one stylus to test
with and don't have access to any others. It appears to have an eraser on it
but it doesn't do anything (no USB data when it is used.) But I can't confirm
whether it's a limitation of the tablet or if it's not actually an eraser on
the stylus.

There are only two things I haven't been able to ascertain about the USB
protocol for the tablet. One is why there are two proximity values (one is
set when the stylus gets close, and the other one is set when it gets really
close) so I'm not sure whether one is actually some sort of tool ID. The
other is that when the stylus gets in range, the very first set of coordinates
(and only the first set) are way off (huge negative values) and they're always
the same, which I suspect could be a tool ID or possibly a short serial number.

But alas, without access to other styli I'm afraid I can't test any further!

Cheers,
Adam.
