[pfSense] Orange 3G+ USB Dongle

2012-02-02 Thread Mehma Sarja
I'm trying to remotely setup an Orange 3G+ usb modem and am wondering if
we can directly plug it into a pfSense's USB port and start configuring
it? By remotely, I mean rural Kenya. It came bundled with this Dlink
DIR-412 router and negotiating SSH port-forward through 3 devices(3G
modem, router and pfSense) is making me lose hair.

I am hoping the clouds clear up and the Sun shines through by allowing
the pfsense, Supermicro Atom, to magically see the modem (after a
little dmesg-ing) and allow me to start configuring it. I can hope, can't I?

Hi Mehma,

You could have taken this first into the Kenyan technical forum -
skunkworks.

Anyway, no problem.

First tell me, which modem is this? ZTE MF192 or the older one? I cannot
remember the model. Having the modem bundled with DIR-412 means these guys
(Orange) already disabled the virtual CD-ROM, right? That is the only way
it would work with the D-Link DIR-412.

If I can get the AT command string to disable the virtual CD-ROM, I am
pretty sure I can help you with a working ppp.conf that would make it work
with pfSense.

I am in Kenya too.

I will get the model number shortly. We got the bundle in Kisumu a month
ago and have it running on a weekly pre-pay plan. You'll have to excuse
me, I do not know what a virtual CD-ROM is.

I was in Siaya over the new year's working on a medical records
automation project. We are trying to get ssh access to allow them to
go-live next month. The administrators are really green and need much
hand-holding. We carried most of our equipment over (3 servers, 5
switches, fiber optic cables) and are currently challenged by Internet
access and UPS.

Washington,

It is 3G+, RUIM card on the EVDO network. The service is called
"Internet Everywhere 3G+" and is prepaid weekly unlimited for 990:

Sorry to keep bothering you, I'll send you the exact model number

I've been able to find.

Hi Mehma,

I am not sure I understand what you need to do here.

Is it that you'd like to run pfSense on a workstation in Siaya, to enable
you get SSH access onto a server located there?

Have you tried looking at this another way, like:

1. Using TeamViewer (http://www.teamviewer.com) - Get the guys at Siaya to
run it on a host there, run the same on your side,
access their Desktop, then you can download putty.exe from
http://lix.in/-adf819 and use it to ssh into the server you want
2. If you want to have pfSense at the site in Siaya, my question is - how
will you be accessing the pfSense box? Do you intend to configure a VPN
tunnel between the box and another endpoint at your end?

I have not tried using Internet in Siaya, but if Safaricom was there, I'd
go for their 3G instead of this EvDO from Orange, although the last time I
used EvDO in Kisumu the speeds were pretty good. I hope the same applies to
Siaya.

Please feel free to take this discussion off list with me. I have a feeling
you are not in Kenya at the moment. I can probably help you sort out your
needs.

Try this, connect the 3g dongle, then reboot the device and try to
access it again.

I have a ZTE modem that does not release the cdrom device until after it
is rebooted or I press save on the 3G wan interface again.

So it doesn't work on cold boot, but it does work after a warm reboot.

Since there is mild interest on the list, I share our findings:

UPON CONNECTING the modem, huawei mobile model number EC 122, we see
this in /var/log/system.log:
feb 3 07:11:02 firewall kernel: da0: removable
direct access SCSI-2 device
feb 3 07:11:02 firewall kernel: da0: attempt to query device size
failed: NOT READY, media not present

and we see nothing having to do with usb or huawei in /var/log/system.log

The modem light remains a flashing blue as if it is working. I'll try
the warm boot, heck even I work well after a warm bath.

I am thinking of going over to Safaricom to tide us over.

Please try and find what the AT command string for disabling the virtual
cd-rom/storage is. I believe after that you'll probably get your 'modem' -
ugenX.Y
I've used AT^U2DIAG=0 on an Huawei E1820 to achieve that and get the modem
to work. You may want to try that, but if it fails, Google is your friend.

Huawei E1820 (I have tested this and worked with PC-BSD). It's a bit more
costly though, costing like KES 9,999
Huawei E160 costs KES 2,000 and I have a feeling it will work. I'll try it
today at some point and let you know. It can save you some few thousands
KES.

So, take this matter closer to the solution for the benefit of Mehma Sarja
& others..

I have taken time to run tests to find a solution for Mehma's problem. I
had a choice between the very expensive Huawei E1820 (5.76Mbps/21Mbps) and
the relatively cheaper Huawei E160 (2Mbps/3.6Mbps). The reason for running
a test against the E160 was two-fold: To see if it actually works, and as
such make Mehma save a few thousands when he finally decides which modem to
go for, seeing as E1820 costs approximately US$ 111 while the E160 costs
US$ 22:-)

In both cases I was able to successfully use the same settings with pfSense
2.0.1 (amd64). Here is the output of `ifconfig` when the modem was
connected (and I scp-ed this output to another Unix box using the same
connection):

http://62.8.64.102/~wash/ifconfig.txt

The procedure involved running HyperTerminal (this I did on my Windows 8
PC) and disabling the virtual CD-ROM on both devices.
The AT command string is AT^U2DIAG=0 (to disable, and =10 to re-enable)

I discovered that pfSense (I was running on the LiveCD mode) already had
umodem and u3g modules loaded.
Sorry, I did not check if they were compiled into the kernel or loaded as
modules.

And here is my ppp.conf - the exact one I used with the Safaricom-branded
Huawei modem(s).

u3g:
 set device /dev/cuaU0.0
 set server /var/run/3g-internet "" 0177

 set crtscts on
 disable vjcomp
 disable acfcomp
 disable deflate
 disable deflate24
 disable pred1
 disable protocomp

 #nat enable yes

 set dns 8.8.8.8
 set ifaddr 10.1.0.2/0 10.1.0.1/0 255.255.255.255 0.0.0.0
add default HISADDR # See ppp.link*

This was my first time ever using pfSense in a dialup mode, so I wrote my
ppp.conf by hand. Of course I did find where this is apparently done using
the webUI (under Interface Assignments) but clicking the option for editing
ppp.conf and saving it did not seem to modify my ppp.conf. Is this perhaps
because I was running LiveCD?

Is pfSense editor able to generate a complete ppp.conf like the one above
and write it? That's the only question I had left on my mind.

I believe this will help Mehma in his endeavors.

which usb port the thing is plugged into.

 set server /var/run/3g-internet "" 0177
 set speed 921600
 set timeout 0
 set authname saf
 set authkey data
set dial "ABORT BUSY TIMEOUT 2 \
   \"\" \
   AT OK-AT-OK \
   AT+CFUN=1 OK-AT-OK \
   AT+CMEE=2 OK-AT-OK \
   AT+CSQ OK \
   AT+CGDCONT=1,\\\"IP\\\",\\\"safaricom\\\" OK \
   ATD*99# CONNECT"

We put in #777

 set crtscts on
 disable vjcomp
 disable acfcomp
 disable deflate
 disable deflate24
 disable pred1
 disable protocomp
 disable mppe
 disable ipv6cp
 disable lqr
 disable echo
 #nat enable yes
 enable dns
 resolv writable
 set dns 8.8.8.8
 set ifaddr 10.1.0.2/0 10.1.0.1/0
 255.255.255.255 0.0.0.0

add default HISADDR # See ppp.link*

This was my first time ever using pfSense in a dialup mode, so I wrote
my ppp.conf by hand. Of course I did find where this is apparently
done using the webUI (under Interface Assignments) but clicking the
option for editing ppp.conf and saving it did not seem to modify my
ppp.conf. Is this perhaps because I was running LiveCD?

Is pfSense editor able to generate a complete ppp.conf like the one
above and write it? That's the only question I had left on my mind.

I believe this will help Mehma in his endeavors.
One of the servers we have there is an Ubuntu box and the EC122 specs
say that it supports Linux kernel 2.6x and above. There is also a howto
for that particular model here:
http://citycellmodemtroubleshoot.blogspot.com/2011/03/installation-of-ec122-modem-in-ubuntu.html

So, we seem to have options.

No. The device nodes I believe are created "in some order" independent of
the USB port you plug a device into.

You also needed to change $authname, $authkey and the APN name, I believe.

I am a *BSD guy, so will reserve my energies when it comes to Linux as I
consider myself incompetent (unwilling to be competent, that is).

Wish you all the best!
