[REBOL] REBOL: THE OFFICIAL GUIDE Re:(3)
Your absolutely right. You can get it cheaper through amazon or ecampus or whatever. But there is another issue at hand here. When you buy the book through Rebol Press you are directly supporting Rebol. This is a give a little get a lot situation. We've all gotten a lot from Rebol now it's time to give back. Lets face it Rebol has given our little community a wealth of support, to say nothing of Rebol itself. They have never asked for a thing in return. This is a chance for us to give back. Personally I don't think "$13.60" is to much to ask for. On a side note, it seems that there are two other Rebol books out there as well. I'm still getting this one, but... [REBOL] DONT MAKE IT COMMERCIAL!!!! Re:(11)
OK, OK I have been dually chastized :-) The point that I was trying to make was: I feel that were REBOL to follow the pricing/Marketing example of Turbo Pascal, and price their product so that it is redally available to the masses combined with a top notched marketing plan I believe that they stand the best chance of being pull volted to success. I then made the most gregious error of mentioning BE. I appologize if I offended the BE lovers of the world :-) BUT! I still belive that BE would be much futher along if they were to throw copies of their operating system out of a plane over every university campus in the free world. I believe that it is the college geeks that are responsible for Turbo Pascal becoming as popular as it was, in it's day. I believe that it it is the college geeks that are responsible for LINUX achieving the level of popularity that it enjoys today. And I also believe that BE will never see the level of success that it could simply because the owners are not willing to romance the college set. I think this is very short sighted of them; and will retard if not not dwarf their seccuss. These are the people that are going to be tomarrows decision makers. And it has been shown time and again that the students at the colleges and universities can catapalt a product into the nirvania of success or into the toilet; which ever. REBOL is a product, in my opinion, that would benefit greatly from an intimate relationship with the geekdom. I don't know their finances so I can't suggest how much they would be able to give; but I would encourge the owners to give to the university set until it hurts. I honestly believe that the returns down the road would be greater than any temperary suffering now. So again my apologies to the powers that be of BE. I am deeply contrite and humbled. OK moderately so any way :-) Paul A. [REBOL] DONT MAKE IT COMMERCIAL!!!! Re:(13)
Absolutely correct. My comments about smart marketing are meant for Turbo not Borland. I agree Borland did a steller job of turning everything they touched into c---. It's good to hear from a fellow North Carolinian. I'm over here on the coast (with web feet) in Kinston NC. I would really look forward to reading a good REBOL book and I'm sure the people at REBOL would be glad for the exposure. Good luck; Paul From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [REBOL] DONT MAKE IT COMMERCIAL Re:(12) Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 9:42:30 -0500 Liberally Snipped... I'm not sure the marketing of Borland's Turbo Pascal is the greatest oneg. Their marketing was horrible, and they ran a number of good products into the cyberdust. For several years in the 1980s I essentially made my living writing books about Borland products. They had some GREAT ones, like Turbo Pascal, Turbo Basic, Turbo Prolog, Reflex, and Sprint, their most excellent word processing program based on EMACS. I wrote books on all those except T. Pascal. Fantastic programs for their time, especially Sprint (which I still actually use for a lot of tasks, even though it has not been upgraded since 1988). Great programs fall by the wayside rather quickly, however, if they are not marketed correctly.I will buy Rebol whatever the price for its obvious advantages. I will probably even write a book about it. I will certainly continue to write programs IN it. -- Ralph Roberts, CEO Alexander Books / Creativity, Inc. 65 Macedonia Road Alexander, NC 28701 1-800-472-0438 voice fax tollfree U.S. Canada 1-828-255-8719 voice fax overseas See Ralph's latest bestsellers at: http://abooks.com/genealogy http://autograph-book.com And my company's online auctions: http://booksave.com Wholesale to the Public Book Auction http://blue-gray.com Civil War Auction http://tennesseestars.com All TENNESSEE THINGS Auction http://bookauction.net Buy Books Net Instead of Retail! http://a-aa.com/gem GEM METALWORKERS AUCTION http://a-aa.com/nc DOWN HOME IN NORTH CAROLINA AUCTION __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

I agree hole heartedly Elan. In the back of my mind I am seeing "Turbo Pascal". I don't know if you where around when it was popular, but I was in college at the time. It was owned by every geek on campus. When every other language was selling for ridiculas prices with all manner of bizzar run time fees, you could get "Turbo Pascal" for practiclly nothing and there was no run time fee involved. That little company eventually became Borland Computers. At the sametime I'm thinking of BEOS. They have a beautiful product but their pricing is keeping the OS out of the hands of the people that could make it a player. I may be wrong but I don't think BEOS will ever be a contender simply because the owner is so intent in making money from day one. Just my humble thoughts on the issue.
