But any link I found so far to download this new, open source web browser
leeds to www.getswift.org which refuses the connection.
Does anyone know where to get swift?

The page in Google's cache currently leads to a page with the following
message:

So, it seems the project may be returning in the future. But given that
the site is now completely dead, who knows?!

I was able to download from http://getswiftfox.com/
, but not get it installed, and found the help forum of no value in
trying.

No, that's a completely different browser. That one is based upon Gecko
(Firefox). Swift is based upon WebKit, which is the same rendering
engine used by Safari.

I have the Swift_0.1.msi installer if anyone wants it. It's got a
terrible user interface, but it will at least render the pages
reasonably well. Compare for yourself:

Re: [WSG] Standards Table Layout

2006-07-30 Thread Matt Heerema
A client who is clinging to the web of yore, is still insisting on
tables being used for layout. It is the misconception tables
provide greater browser compatibility, the client supports IE 5.X
for MAC OS.

Does this client also insist that their accountants do all of their
work with a 10-key calculator and tape, and prepare and file all tax
reports by hand?

Wishing to bridge a gap of understanding through education, could
someone provide examples of standards based retro-fitted table
design? It is hoped seeing clean semantic code and CSS used with
low-bandwidth tables, will inspire greater confidence in CSS being
used solely for positioning and styling.

I guess I don't understand what you are asking for here.

automated validator the other day! :)

I believe that was in regard to accessibility? Unless I wasn't
reading closely enough.

The HTML validator has a few bugs, but I think you are safe in this
situation.

Unless I am mistaken, one of the only things you need to consider in
cases like this is that you don't nest a block level element inside
an inline element.

li's are considered block level, no?

Any list could have an implied header if you think about it in the
way of

order. I could order my shopping list! :)

1. Bananas
2. Milk
3. Butter
4. Eggs

You could, if your list was in order of importance, or alphabetical
order, or in order that you pull them off of the shelves in order to
optimize your trip through the store (which only us true geeks would
take the time to worry about ;-)). It appears to me, however, that
your list is in no particular order whatsoever, meaning you would use
an unordered list. If that order has meaning to you, then perhaps an
ordered list would be better.

In either case, this is not tabular data.

Re: [WSG] Alphabetical Listing Buttons

2006-07-11 Thread Matt Heerema

Richard's alphabet is a simple row array, which is not naturally
rendered by any popular graphical user agent as any kind of row list
(dl, ul, ol). As a semantic dl, ul or ol, no user with page styles
unavailable will see anything remotely resembling the row format that
Richard wants, unlike what Bob proposed. A table is as good as (X)HTML
provides to semantically provide a row array.

Felix, it seems that your entire argument is based on what the user
sees without styling applied.

HTML IS NOT A PRESENTATIONAL LANGUAGE.

It should not matter what the user sees if they do not have styling
applied, because if they disable styling they obviously don't care
about how things look!

Presentation is to be taken care of by stylesheets.

I am new to this list, but I would think that these things would be
obvious to anyone who claims to understand Web standards. These are
very core, principle parts of the standards we are talking about
here! HTML for semantic structure, CSS for presentation, DOM
scripting for behavior.

What a strange argument that is going on here... talking about data
types in a language that is not typed...

I think we should all just go with Geoff's suggestion for the grocery
list and call it a night.

Sorry for shouting.

Hi Cole,

I dunno if I can SOLVE it (and I see the problem in IE), but instead of
conditional comments couldn't you use Tanta's box-model hack to serve
the bottom negative margin to IE?

http://www.tantek.com/CSS/Examples/boxmodelhack.html

I know it's still a hack, but due to the discrepancies between gecko and
IE box models it may be the only way?

Re: [WSG] flash activation border??? is it a XP problem

2006-05-18 Thread Matt

Actually, this is the best example I've seen to date:

http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/articles/swfobject.html

I have to say that I much prefer this method to using the object
embed tags. It's cleaner, it validates and it checks the user's
version of the flash player. It also gives you much better control of
what the user sees if they don't have the correct version (I'm
actually wrapping the flash container div around an enitire interface,
so if a user has flash player 8 they'll see the flash site. If not,
they'll see the HTML site).

On 5/18/06, Jan Brasna [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Did I say fix? Apologies, I meant workaround / hack.

Well, Ceri, I have to say I prefer this way of unobtrusive including of
objects with proper fallbacks as nowadays' browsers are pretty much
unable to handle it with the right resources.

Be it UFO, SWFObject, QTObject etc.

Yes! Those are strong. I love the Show Less/More toggle. I usually
feel that too much information is given on those product detail pages,
and it's nice to be able to hide them. It does look like the more
div is containing a table that's a bit too wide, clipping the content
on the right column in IE6 FF Win. Refreshing the page in FF
corrects the problem for whatever reason. I'm sure you'll be bug
squashing for a bit though!

Everything looks killer! I'll be hitting this site up for awhile.

That's much more work though. Does it worth it? The only advantage I can see
is that in JS challenged UAs, only the related sub-menu would be opened vs.
 the whole enchilada.

That, and also that you don't get weird visual effects during load
