RE: [OzMOSS] [listserver] List Posting Error Notification

2008-11-30 Thread Mitch Denny
Hi Daniel,

It is today. I've been on leave for the past two weeks and unable to get the
kind of Internet connection to look into this issue (been on a boat in the
middle of the pacific). I've asked to get the box rebooted (it is in a rack
that we can't access). Then MSTSC should come up and I can extract mailing
list subscriber data and get it to the list admins.

I'll then leave it to them what they want to do with their mailing lists.
The server is going to be taken offline though as it is no longer reliable
(although it has been a faithful servant of various technical communities
for a number of years :P).

RE: [OzMOSS] [listserver] List Posting Error Notification

2008-11-30 Thread Mitch Denny
Apologies folks. I will be looking into this afternoon. I'm getting the
server rebooted. Then I'll give all the mailing list admins a list of
subscribers and we will move this off onto a more reliable system.

This same server hosts a couple of lists which are all having the same
problem. Sorry for the problems you are experiencing.

Re: [OzMOSS] [listserver] List Posting Error Notification

2008-11-26 Thread darren.neimke
It seems like a no-brainer to me... just move it. If people want a SharePoint
site to collaborate, create knowledge bases, and share IP (hey, now doesn't
that all sound like a novel idea ) then sure... fire up a portal. There's no
value in having people run mailing lists though - it's a waste of resources.

Aaron,

Hosting this list on sharepoint sounds like a very bad idea. Sharepoint is not
an email-list management tool, is not designed to do it, and the workarounds
that are embedded in the product do not allow for something like ozmoss.

I suggest we use a tool that was designed with something exactly like ozmoss in
mind. If you insist on using Microsoft-built things, I know there used to be
some products like Auto-DL (part of exchange 2000 SDK) that can be customized
to work as a list server - using a real email server (exchange). However, I
suggest we use a web one, and give administrative rights to our most common and
trusted users, instead of relying on one company or one person - be it Readify
or someone with a spare server and bandwidth(no offence Daniel).

I do appreciate the effort that went into starting OzMoss, and I think it
proved a great tool - I know people from all around the world are subscribing -
not just Australia. But if things continue this way, I fear that OzMoss will
lose people who get annoyed with getting "Posting Errors" and other "junk" all
the time, not to mention all the other stuff reported by people on this thread.

Just my 0.02$. I hope I wasn't too blunt - still trying to figure out when I
should stop.

Hi All,

Sorry for any inconvenience caused by the errors you may be experiencing with
the system.

Matt, Dan and I are looking to move the listserver off the current platform
which is MailEnable. We will be looking for a proper SharePoint implementation
with search, auto subscribe etc.

Thanks for your patience in this and we hope to resolve this soon.

Please feel free to 'little r' me if you have any concerns.

Paul put it much better than I have been. None of my comments mean any
disrespect, nor is there a lack of appreciation for the work that has been
done thus far to host the list.

It just feels like we should take the list out of beta and into production
(groan) now that it has become a full and useful thing.

Two issues, one of which I've raised months ago...
-admin email spam
-about 1 in 3 emails sent is corrupted due to the list software not
understanding how to handle inline MIME attachments and sticking the
signature in the middle of UUEncoded text

The second one makes the list very tedious to use for about half of us.

RE: [OzMOSS] [listserver] List Posting Error Notification

2008-11-25 Thread Paul Noone
The irony of operating a SharePoint group using a variety of open source
software would be almost too much to bear. ☺

Why not use SharePoint for discussion forms? :P After all, this is a SharePoint
mailing list hehe

I’m happy to set up a site on the UG Site for OzMOSS and have discussion
boards, profiles, account information, etc.

The new site is in the works with LiveID and such and I feel it would be a
great house for the website of OzMOSS.

Ø My only desire is to see it evolve into something even greater.

Can I recommend ozMOSS-dev, ozMOSS-design and ozMOSS-install as a starting
ground? I’m sure there are more but ITPRO seems a little unspecific (no offence
Ishai!).

I’d be happy to co-manage the design list.

Perhaps a page on ozMOSS where member could provide details such as role,
specialty skills, blog and site URL would also be a nice resource.

Similarly, these details could be added to a registered user’s forum account.
However that might also mean moving the discussion board to something more
usable too. I can strongly recommend Simple Machine forums.

RE: [OzMOSS] [listserver] List Posting Error Notification

2008-11-25 Thread Daniel Brown
I vote we talk to the owner of the list first before making calls on their
behalf without their knowledge.

Then we can discuss a road forward.

As discussed the UG lead meeting earlier this week, Having OsMOSS as a Virtual
User Group in conjunction with the user groups may be very benifital, for both
OzMOSS and the User Groups but I wouldn’t go down the path with a goggle group
for it and certainly not without talking to who runs OzMOSS currently.

2008-11-25 Thread Daniel Brown
I actually like this idea of a dev / I.T pro list, But I’d like to see it under
the OzMOSS title. i.e. [EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] or something.

But as this list is not controlled by any of us, it’s up to the management of
the list to fix out these issues and move forward. It’s a volunteer effort.

Many posts of late have been design oriented and I can see how it might be
starting to get on the teats of some of the more caffeine-inclined, purist

2008-11-25 Thread Bill Williamson
It's been dropping and mangling emails for as long as I've been on it, and
occassionaly spins out of control (like right now) spamming everyone with
"you are not subscribed" messages.I personally cannot read at least 1
out of 5 messages due to the list server not understanding multipart mime
messages and mangling them!

I'll make this my last message on the subject unless some other people
agree, but I see no real reason NOT to move to a proper listserv (be it
yahoo or google or anyone else). The ozmoss.com site can continue to exist,
and it would be less of a strain on whomever is hosting the list.

2008-11-25 Thread Bill Williamson
I use google groups for a LOT of discussion lists, and find it works quite
well.

Pros:
-free
-web interface if you don't like spammy emails
-file area to upload stuff
-page capability to put FAQs/answered questions/etc

Cons:
-Have to have a "google account" (not just gmail, any email address will
work)

RE: [OzMOSS] [listserver] List Posting Error Notification

2008-11-25 Thread Daniel Brown
Hardly cause for rebellion or to start another mailing list, I think that’s
overly zealous considering OzMOSS is run my Matt and has been up and running
for quite some time.

A couple of faulty emails is hardly case for a revolt and to splinter the group
into too. :\

OzMOSS has been working fine for quiet a period of time, no need to jump the
gun on this.
