[Liveaboard] status update

2010-06-29 Thread Eric T.
 Hello all again,
I am typing this e-mail message using my Dragon speech input system on
my
new computer. It works pretty well but occasionally I do have to use the
mouse
and then type in the right word. This is still much easier.
I have made the decision that I can no longer live on my sailboat. It
is just too difficult to do things with only one hand and being vision
impaired.
Does anybody want to buy a real piece of junk sailboat?
It is a 1974 Coronado 35.
It needs everything, the ruler furling for the jib has been jammed for
years, the Main halyard has been jammed for years, the 12 V power system is
screwed, the 120 V power system is screwed, there is a big hunk of material
missing from the starboard side of the keel, the seacock under the galley
sink allows water to flow whether you close it or not.
Only asking $6,000.

My new computer;
3.0 GHz Pentium D
2 GB RAM
my usual disk drive drawers to allow me to clone my C: disk
22 X DVD/CD burner with light scribe
SoundBlaster card
four port USB card
ATI All-In-Wonder 9600 XT card
all on a 4-core-dual-VSTA motherboard from Asrock.
Still running windows XP home edition.

Some of that was hard to do with this speech recognition software.
sure beats typing it.

Thanks for your efforts Vern.

I for one would appreciate the archives, though I am un-aware of the difference
between the two sources.
I'm new to the experience in more ways than one.

Since I'm new I just want to make sure of the rules...
So far i figure I have to; repress my joy, express my currmugeon side, and
contribute ways to improve communication. Is that right ?

I usually lay the cushions out on the foredeck, soak them thoroughly,
add a little low-foaming detergent, and get a bevy of beautiful,
enthusiastic, buxom Italian grape-crushing girls to stomp on them until
they're exhausted[1]. Then, after a bit of rest, the process is repeated
while rinsing, and once the soap bubbles are all gone, they get stomped
more or less dry and finish drying in the sun (during the summer in
Florida, that takes 2-3 days - assuming it doesn't rain in the
meantime.) Works very well.

[1] Umm. Due to temporary technical difficulties, I've had to do it
myself. Every single time, now that I think about it. I'm still
debugging the process, though, and should have it solved soon.

[Liveaboard] Change of topic - L.I. Sound sailing Re: test

2010-06-29 Thread Steve Weinstein
Now that we all seem to back on board (bad pun?) , are any NY, CT, or RI
sailors going to be out and about on the Sound this weekend and next week?

We're planning on heading out Saturday - heading East (probably Port Jeff on
Sat and then who knows). Our only 'limitation' is we have to be back in
Oyster Bay by the morning or mid-day of Wednesday, the 7th.

'smatter with you today, Ron - Did you wake up and have a glass of lemon

I guess this should be said again but this "list" is like a bunch of
like-minded friends - some of whom know each other well, some of whom we
just met - gathering at the local watering hole and hoisting a couple of
cold ones. Sometimes the discussion revolves around our common sailing
interests, sometimes about what stupid thing some elected official just did,
and sometimes griping about the weather and/or a harrowing approach to a
harbor.

The collective wisdom of the list members is a great source of sailing and
gear wisdom. But it's also for occasionally idle chatter -

It's called life - LIGHTEN UP!

I've had good luck with Lysol disinfectant spray (I like the 'blue'
flavour, Seabreeze I think), then a day in the sunshine. Good
ventilation in the boat is important to keep them smelling fresh. I
spray enough to dampen the surface, so it takes 2 full cans for my
upholstery. (typical 30')

Re: [Liveaboard] anchors, Rocna

2010-06-29 Thread Phil Sherwood
Hi Kevin,

Cynosure is a '87 Passport 40 sloop, about 12.5 tons loaded. My home
port is Friday Harbor WA: I've cruised the PacNW and Vancouver Island
a fair bit but headed down the coast in '06 and have been in Ecuador
for a while now. Will be leaving here in late November to go back up
to Panama and over to the Caribbean. I've used a 20-kilo Bruce-type
claw with no problems to this point but am aiming to prepare for more
wind and different anchoring conditions where I'm heading.

Thanks for the input on the Rocna! Any other reviews out there?

You could use a strong solution of Lysol concentrate. I did 2 mattresses,
but it took months to dry. No more smell. Drying with a lot of sunshine
would have been better.

The reason the list has been quiet is that it’s beendown. The reason it was
down was because the domain expired. Merrill haddonated the domain and I
didn’t have any control over it.

So I registered a new domain which is liveaboardonline.com. I am still checking
things and doing some work on the web side of the list butit looks like the
email part is now working on the new domain.

I am not sure what is going to happen with the archives yetso I have to check
those out.

Thanks,

Vern

Hey Phil,

I have a Rocna 20 (44 pounds) aboard my 8 ton Fuji 35 Ketch. 200 feet of

Very happy with the Rocna and quite confident in its ability to set well and

The reason the list has been quiet is that it’s been
down.  The reason it was down was because the domain expired.  Merrill had
donated the domain and I didn’t have any control over it.

So I registered a new domain which is liveaboardonline.com.
I am still checking things and doing some work on the web side of the list but
it looks like the email part is now working on the new domain.

I am not sure what is going to happen with the archives yet
so I have to check those out.

Thanks,

Vern

Re: [Liveaboard] Removing Mildew Smell From Cushions?

White vinegar followed by baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). I had found this

Short of replacing them, what is the best way to remove the "mildew" odor
from older cabin cushions? Febreeze is just not cutting it.

I was thinking soaking/washing the cushions with a mixture of Oxiclean and
laundry detergent to try to remove the mildew from the foam. Then using a
poly sheet and shopvac to vacuum-bag out most of the water from the foam,
and then drying them in the sun.

Will that work? Is there a better way?

I know the cushions should be replaced, but it's just not in this year's
budget.

[Liveaboard] Archives

2010-06-29 Thread Vernon Densler
Does anyone use the archives that are on mail-archives.com or just the ones
that are on my server? Because the domain has changed I don't know if I can
get the mail-archives.com to switch over or if I will have to create a new
mail-archive.com archive for the new domain. If no one is using it I won't
bother to do anything. If it is getting used I will spend the time to see
what I can do to continue it with the new domain or create the new archive.

Thanks,

Vern

[Liveaboard] Removing Mildew Smell From Cushions?

2010-06-29 Thread Stephen Petri
Short of replacing them, what is the best way to remove the "mildew" odor
from older cabin cushions? Febreeze is just not cutting it.

I was thinking soaking/washing the cushions with a mixture of Oxiclean and
laundry detergent to try to remove the mildew from the foam. Then using a
poly sheet and shopvac to vacuum-bag out most of the water from the foam,
and then drying them in the sun.

Will that work? Is there a better way?

I know the cushions should be replaced, but it's just not in this year's
budget.

[Liveaboard] List

2010-06-29 Thread Vernon Densler
The reason the list has been quiet is that it's been down. The reason it
was down was because the domain expired. Merrill had donated the domain and
I didn't have any control over it.

So I registered a new domain which is liveaboardonline.com. I am still
checking things and doing some work on the web side of the list but it looks
like the email part is now working on the new domain.

I am not sure what is going to happen with the archives yet so I have to
check those out.

Thanks,

Vern
