Those are the 2V ones, Eric.

The one's I had, and presumably Norm was talking about are 6V at approx 370
aH so a pair gives you a 12V 370 aH house bank wired together. The ones I
had are in the Waste Marine catalog as 8L16s

  OK.
I looked up L-16 2 volt and found these:

"Trojan L16RE-2V 1,110 Amp-Hour 2 Volt Deep Cycle Battery".

So I guess Norm has 1110 Amp Hours for a house bank.

Yes, 119 pounds each.

No, six of them as it is a 12 volt system.

The L16 2V units are single cell 2.2VDC devices (as are all lead/acid

Re: [Liveaboard] L16HC and others Re: Norm's batteries?

2012-08-25 Thread Norm

I just checked the Trojan web site.

They have apparently dropped the "C" from the "HC" (high capacity). They
have also divided the L16 RE (renewable energy) to a A and a B version. I
have no idea why.

Here's the basic data.

L16 H 435AH 6V 125#
L16 RE A 325AH 6V 115#
L16 RE B 370AH 6V 118#
L16 RE 2V 1110AH 119#

All L16 units have the same size case. The AH ratings quoted are at the 20
hour rate.

Remember that when you put two 6V (or six 2V units) units in series to get
12V the AH ratings remain the same (but the WH ratings add together).

I just dis-installed four L16HC 6V units. They were about 400AH each.

The T-105 (often called a "golf cart battery") is rated for 225AH in the RE
version.

[Liveaboard] New Flying Pig Pix Links

2012-08-25 Thread Flying Pig
New Flying Pig Pix Links

I know that this will likely result in the usual one or two unsubscriptions
from The Flying Pig Log due to too much traffic :{)) But I promise to be
regaling you with tales of our travels pretty soon.

However, in response to many requests, based on "it didn't happen, if there
aren't pictures to prove it," I offer links to the URLs of the most recent
(in the last month or so) of the stuff we've been up to aboard (well, on the
hard in Riverside Marina in Ft. Pierce FL, if that counts, even though we've
lived aboard for all but the last bits).

I'll warn you that unless you're "really" into boat work, you can probably
skip these, but for those who have the interest, either professional or
morbid, they may be enjoyable.

As above, I promise to be back in the water soon, but we still have a few
things to accomplish which aren't on these galleries. Also, in light of the
realities, I've renamed the home gallery for these to the 2011-2012 refit!

We have done an inordinate amount of work on our rudder. The first set is
of structural improvements we did to the skeg; further back (click the "prev
28" at the bottom left of the screen if you want to see those), you can see
others which include strengthening the rudder itself, and how we resolved
the pits in the shaft, but those have been up for a while. The second set
is of our trial raising of the rudder to assure proper fit of the new bolts
we bought for the gudgeon which holds it up, and the third is of the
successful reinstallation of the rudder into the shaft log and gudgeon -
with reinstallation of the steering and packing gland to follow when we get
to them.

http://justpickone.org/skip/gallery/index.php?mode=album&album=Flying+Pig+Refit+2011-2012%2FRudder%2FStructural+Improvements&start=158

http://justpickone.org/skip/gallery/index.php?mode=album&album=Flying+Pig+Refit+2011-2012%2FRudder%2FReinstallation%2FActual+Reinstallation

The next couple are of the continuing saga of our anchor system upgrade. We
substantially stoutened our windlass base, including repairing some deck
damage, and addressing some interior water damage in the first link, and
installed a monster chain stopper to go with the much heavier new anchor we
bought earlier, in the second. The same applies about looking at earlier
stuff, but in this case you'd click the "Anchor System Refit" at the top of
the page for other galleries as well.

http://justpickone.org/skip/gallery/index.php?mode=album&album=Flying+Pig+Refit+2011-2012%2FAnchor+System+Refit%2FWindlass+Reinforcement+and+Water+Damage+Repair&start=28

http://justpickone.org/skip/gallery/index.php?mode=album&album=Flying+Pig+Refit+2011-2012%2FAnchor+System+Refit%2FChain+Stopper

My last missive had to do with the immense satisfaction we had with all the
work we put into the bottom as we laid on the first of our layers of barrier
coat. It's what keeps the water away from the raw fiberglass, preventing
future blisters. Since we need not less than 12 mils to assure that, we've
put on more than that already, and have one more coat to go.

http://justpickone.org/skip/gallery/index.php?mode=album&album=Flying+Pig+Refit+2011-2012%2FBottom+Job%2FBarrier+and+Bottom+Coats%2F20+Or+More+Mils+Barrier+Coat

There will be a few more pictures to come on the next one, but we also did a
lot of work on our drive train. These are of the installation of the
checked and shortened shaft and the return to a standard-type packing gland
(which keeps the water out of the boat while still allowing the shaft to
turn).

http://justpickone.org/skip/gallery/index.php?mode=album&album=Flying+Pig+Refit+2011-2012%2FMaxprop+-+Shaft+-+Bearing%2FReinstallation+and+New+Packing+Gland

Like so much of this refit, nothing's been simple, it seems. We wound up
virtually rebuilding the cockpit table we had built for us. There will be
final pictures added to this gallery when we get a chance to take them, but
the end result, other than the hinges which aren't shown in the leaves,
here, is pretty much a done deal. Here, too, there's LOTS of pictures
before where this starts, which is just the current work

http://justpickone.org/skip/gallery/index.php?mode=album&album=Flying+Pig+Refit+2011-2012%2FCockpit+Table&start=49

Our staysail is supported below decks by a bobstay. Otherwise, the tension
on the stay would be take entirely by the deck. The previous one's
attachment to the inner deck/stem of the boat had broken under the load.
This is the new end and installation of the turnbuckle and fork for that
bobstay.

http://justpickone.org/skip/gallery/index.php?mode=album&album=Flying+Pig+Refit+2011-2012%2FStaysail+Upgrade%2FBobstay+Replacement

Last, but not least, in the past, before we owned the boat, the anchor
locker's (where the wet chain goes when it comes in) drain had clogged. We
free

I have written up the whole house battery project but I want to add some
photos before I send it out.

But in the meantime you could Google "Trojan Battery Company" then search
for "L16RE 2V"

L16 is the case size, RE is for "renewable energy" and 2V is for two volt
(single cell).

Norm,

I'd be interested in learning something about the details of your

For example: AGM vs. flooded; size; supplier; cost; etc.

A suggestion - if you haven't already done it:

At the coupling that attaches the prop shaft to the transmission.

After tightening the set screw(s) tightly, back them out and pull the shaft
out of the coupling.

Centerpunch the center of the marks made by the set screw points on the
shaft.

Drill into the shaft about an eighth inch, starting with a pilot drill and
ending with a drill about the same diameter as the set screw.

Re-install the shaft using square head set screws with safety wire holes
drilled in the heads and safety wire them securely in place.

I once saw a large, beautiful, and very expensive wooden yacht in the Virgin
Islands with its bow smashed in from hitting a concrete pier because its
prop shaft pulled out of its coupling when put into reverse. It was a sad
sight and so easily prevented.

There will be a few more pictures to come on the next one, but we also did a
lot of work on our drive train. These are of the installation of the
checked and shortened shaft and the return to a standard-type packing gland
(which keeps the water out of the boat while still allowing the shaft to
turn).

Norm,

[Liveaboard] drive shaft couplingRe: New Flying Pig

A suggestion – if you haven't already done it:

I have, actually, but it’s a good reminder...

I have two squeeze bolts, which compress a slight gap, on the tail of the
flange/coupling. The shaft and flange are within .001 of each other so don’t
have a lot of slop. That wasn’t tightened until the end.

I also have a 1/4 hole opposite the key on my flange/coupling (which, by the
way, was trued along with my shaft; it was .004 out, which could have
contributed to my mid-shaft whip for which the intermediate bearing that I
finally had to cut off was installed to cure/damp). That's drilled and tapped
for a cone-point bolt to meet the drill-out receiver in the shaft.

That's got a square, holed head for only 4 sides to strongly apply a wrench,
and then later mouse.

I centered the hole and the drill-out, and set the screw before I moused it to
the gap of one of the side bolts (which I then tightened, preventing any damage
to the aircraft wire which were in the slot, over the bolt).

I brought the flange to the transmission and feeler-gauged it to be somewhere
between .0025 and .003 out (up to the hard-mounted point, .002 fit on the
opposing pair at right angles, and I could barely get a .003 gauge into the far
side), well within the recommended .004 tolerance. Once I’d confirmed that
measure on all 4 bolts (same position tight each time despite removal and
rotating the shaft 1/4 turn x 4), I tightened them. Actually, with flexible
mounts, I can't see how it makes much difference, but I did it anyway :{))

Thanks for the suggestion. I can’t claim to have lost a shaft, but I have
pulled a transmission out, with no ill effects – and that’s part of why I am
going back to a standard packing gland (that, and that it also would damp any
mid-range whip, which I believe I will have killed in any case).
