Ed, just a note that the Canaries are part of the Schengen group as they
are part of Spain. What will that do for your stay?

I had a friend who was RVing around the EU back in 2003. He ran into the
6 month limit in Schengen when wanting to cross by ferry from Denmark to
Sweden so he could eventually make it to Norway. His Choice was to head
to the airport and out of hop a ferry to Poland which was not Schengen
at that time.

I had a Dutch government friend ask questions and there were no answers
as this was not what anyone had happen before that the governments knew
of. They did not know how to handle the whole problem. I thought there
were some nationalities that did not have to leave if they could show
self support without infringing work visa and/or whatever else... I will
check and see what I can find as some of the immigration officials are
still operating with outdated rulebooks...

Besides, you need to spend more time in Portugal.

John,
We may have to spend some time in non-Schengen land. I think we could spend
some time in North Africa or elsewhere that is not Schengen during the
summer to make it so we will not infringe the rules.

We have friends in Canaries right now who advise they did not run into
problems with enforcement during time in France, Portugal, Spain, and now
Canaries. They have gone well over the limits.

It is a stupid dilema to have. I will have to check out whether Malta and
Gibralter are havens or not?

I also was told of one friend who had more than the 90 days allowed and was
stopped in Greece and told, You have a Schengen Problem. They ultimately
were let go after waiting for 15 minutes and then were told, You are crew
on a boat!

Thanks for this and any future advice.

Re: [Liveaboard] test message

2012-10-27 Thread SteveW
Hi, Norm and Jan,

I didn’t realize you were up here in the “north” country! On your way down,
will you be stopping at OB? In terms of a Hurricane Hole, we’ve had several
cruisers duck into OB and drop several hooks in West Harbor which is a great
hurricane hole. From where you normally anchor, you’d head West inside the
harbor past Center Island (the Oyster Bay Marine Center and fuel dock would be
on your left) you’d make a right into West Harbor. Actually, last year with
Irene, I went out to check on the boat the day after the storm and found Steve
and Linda Dashew anchored in there onboard their newest creation, Wind Horse, a
65’ steel world cruiser!

Given their level of expertise and knowledge, if they like West Harbor as a
hurricane hole then that’s good enough for me.

I’m heading out today to strip the sails, dodger, bimini, etc., and stuff all
below. My mooring (500#) is sufficiently buried into the bottom mud and
Captiva should comfortably ride out whatever shows up as a result of Sandy.
Last year, the yard dropped a bunch of moorings where you normally drop your
hook and moved the boats in their slips out to those moorings. Out of the
zillion boats moored in the harbor, they only had one break loose. That one
sailed itself through the mooring field without hitting any other boat
(amazing) and ended up on the beach with minimal damage.

Good luck to all those in the path of Sandy!

Jan and I are just sitting in our RV in a boatyard in Gloucester visiting
our Yankee friends. Expect to leave Monday as Sandy arrives.

If anyone reads Ocean Navigator I have an article in the Sept issue and in

Glad to know that I am still connected to my List family.

Smooth sailing.

Ahoy Steve,
Thank you for thinking of us but:

RV stands for Recreational Vehicle, not Running-for-cover Vessel.
We do miss OB and all the other stops we usually enjoy on the water but this
year we had to drive up north in our little motorhome.

Wow, Norm! I didn’t realize you drove up! I just assumed you cruised up and
were sitting in a friend’s borrowed RV. I’d tell you then to drive to OB but
at this point there’s not a whole hell of a lot of space in the yard. They
starting hauling boats on an accelerated based once it appeared that Sandy was
going to pay us a visit. I was out there this afternoon to strip the jib and
dodger off the boat to prep for the storm. Since I’ve got that “Stack Pak”
arrangement on the main, and the biggest threat seems to be high tides and rain
(although 50-70 kts of forecast wind still gets your attention) I just spiral
wrapped the main around the boom, put some chafe around the mooring lines as
they come over the gunnel to the cleats and called it a day.

As opposed to Irene, last year, the biggest worry folks have is downed
powerlines and excessive flooding. One of the problems is that it looks like
Sandy will arrive on a Full Moon (or close enough) so the spring tides could
wreak major havoc.

Re: [Liveaboard] test message

2012-10-25 Thread Ed Kelly
All the messages are coming thru LOUD AND CLEAR on Angel Louise, now
floating peacefully in the most beautiful port we have been in during the
last 12 years we have been boating, and the last 7 as live aboards, and the
last 5 as cruisers! We are in SIMI, aka Symi, here in the SE part of the
Greek islands on the Aegean Sea. We are signing up for winter mooring
aboard at NETSEL or NETZEL marina in Marmaris, Turkey.

Europe (or at least the 25 mainstays of the EU - with exception of England,
Channel Islands - and Norway, I believe) has the SCHENGEN treaty where the
countries try to emulate the USA states allowing free movement from state
to state among Schengen Countries with citizens of them allowed to work
anywhere and freely travel anywhere without customs problems. But they have
a common response to outsiders, like us US citizens. Only 90 days presence
allowed in any 6 months or 180 day time stretch. Since we lowered mast and
boated through the Rhine, Main, and Danube all year we only have about 18
days left in Europe before we would be OVERSTAYING. So we will go to
Turkey where you can get a Temporary Resident visa for longer than 90 days.

Next spring Sue and I plan to go on a rally called the Eastern
Mediterranean Yacht Rally (www.EMYR.org) and then will turn tail and head
West, hoping to complete a tour of the Med (again only 90 days in the
countries of Greece, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal) and then go down to
the Canary Islands and wait till Christmas and then try to copy Columbus'
voyage back to the new world. Angel Louise was built as a Catamaran 25
years ago but we sail her like a barge! If the wind is not pushing us ...
helping the engines along... we do not go. Too heavy from being Live
Aboards for so long.

Time to move from Simi, its close to sun up here at 6:45 Friday.

Ed and Sue

Re: [Liveaboard] test message

2012-10-25 Thread Lee Huddleston
Just to get some conversation going I have a question for the group. I have
wondered if the cable guide for off-road vehicle winches might work on boats so
as to lessen chaff. The guides that I am referencing are two metal cylinders
arranged vertically and two cylinders arranged horizonally. When the wire cable
is moved through the guide the cylinders roll so that the cable does not chaff
on stationary metal. Since I have a steel boat, it would not be too difficult
for me to install such guides instead of chocks or holes in my gunnels. As line
stretched under load the cylinders would roll instead of the line scrapping
over fixed surfaces. What do you all think of this idea?

Sorry for the Test. My ISP's email servers tanked starting on Thursday
afternoon and finally being resolved last night. I could send but not
receive emails but, I wasn't getting any error messages, so it looked like
the server was up. When I didn't get a copy of my post from the list server,
I thought the list may have been down.

My apologies again.
