[Logica-l] A note In Memoriam of Edgard George Kenneth (Ken) Lopez-Escobar
In Memoriam: Edgard George Kenneth (Ken) López-Escobar, professor of logic at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Maryland, died September 1, 2011 in Annapolis, MD. He worked on model theory and proof theory, with special interests in intuitionistic proof systems and also in the history of mathematics. He received his Ph.D. in 1965 at the University of California, Berkeley, under the supervision of Dana Scott, and supervised the PhD thesis of Xavier Caicedo at the University of Maryland (1978) and Ralph Kopperman at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1966). López-Escobar was for more than 20 years a foreign member of the “Centre for Logic, Epistemology and the History of Science – CLE” at the State University of Campinas – UNICAMP, Brazil, as well as a member of the “Brazilian Logic Society”. He visited Brazil several times, as invited researcher at UNICAMP, and as invited keynote speaker in Brazilian Logic Meetings and was co-author of papers and books with Brazilian logicians. He also participated in several Latin American Symposia on Mathematical Logic - SLALMs, in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Venezuela, having much contributed for their organization. We, who had the privilege to share his friendship, would like to announce that the 17th Brazilian Logic Conference (EBL 2013) is planned to be held in his honor, in 2013.
