Dim sum, and reading Chinese menus
Hello Perlmongers! Some of you already know this, but I've been writing a blog about learning to read Chinese menus: http://kake.dreamwidth.org/tag/chinese+menu and I have dedicated August to the London Perl Mongers, and to the cause of dim sum: http://kake.dreamwidth.org/42338.html http://kake.dreamwidth.org/43392.html My calendar is filling up rapidly, but if you'd like to come and eat dim sum with me at some point this month[0], please let me know offlist[1]. Kake [0] You do not have to be someone I've already met! I am happy to eat dim sum with strangers-off-the-internet. [1] For organisational purposes - though if any official l.pm dim sum meets materialise this month then I will endeavour to come along to those too.
Heretical dim sum, Harbour City, Friday 1pm
You wait for ages, and then two come along at once. I cannot make today's dim sum outing, but instead will be going for dim sum tomorrow, also in Chinatown, also at 1pm, but at a different venue. Harbour City Friday 1pm 46 Gerrard Street W1D 5QH Leicester Square Tube http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=W1D+5QH http://london.randomness.org.uk/wiki.cgi?Harbour_City,_W1D_5QH Please come along and join me! I promise not to take too many photos of the food (though I need to get one of the ma lai goh). Kake

[ANNOUNCE] London.pm social, Knights Templar WC2, Thu 5 Mar 2009
Hello! The March social of the London Perl Mongers is next Thursday, 5th March 2009. We're going to the Knights Templar, a Wetherspoons on Chancery Lane. We have space upstairs booked from 6:30pm. The nearest Tube station is Chancery Lane (Central line), but Holborn (Central and Piccadilly lines) and Temple (Circle and District lines) are also nearby. Relevant buses include the 4, 8, 11, 15, 23, 25, 26, 76, 172, 242, and 341. Maps, more info, etc: http://london.randomness.org.uk/wiki.cgi?Knights_Templar,_WC2A_1DT Please note that there is no upstairs bar; people doing the kitty run will have to go downstairs for drinks. Standard blurb: Social meets are a chance for the various members of the group to meet up face to face and chat with each other about things - both Perl and non-Perl - and newcomers are more than welcome. The monthly meets tend to be bigger than the other ad hoc meetings that take place at other times, and we make sure that they're in easy to get to locations and the pub serves food (meaning that people can eat in the bar if they want to). They normally start around 6.30pm (or whenever people get there after work) and a group tends to be left come closing time. If you're a newcomer or other first timer (even if you've been lurking on the mailing list or on IRC) then please seek Leon out - we have a tradition that the leader of this motley crew buys the new people a drink (orange or not, either's fine) and introduces them to people.

[ANNOUNCE] January social - Antelope, SW1 - Thurs 8 Jan
Hello! The January social of the London Perlmongers is this Thursday, 8th January. We're going to the Antelope, 22 Eaton Terrace, SW1W 8EZ. Note that we don't have a room booked this month, so we'll be wherever in the pub we find space. No doubt some of us (e.g. me) will be there early to secure tables; there will definitely be a Perlmonger presence by 6:30pm. The closest Tube station is Sloane Square on the Circle and District lines; it's also within walking distance of Knightsbridge (Piccadilly line) and Victoria (District, Circle, and Victoria lines). Relevant buses are: 11, 19, 22, 137, 211, 360, 452, and C1. Maps, more info, etc: http://london.randomness.org.uk/wiki.cgi?Antelope,_SW1W_8EZ Standard blurb: Social meets are a chance for the various members of the group to meet up face to face and chat with each other about things - both Perl and non-Perl - and newcomers are more than welcome. Last I checked (April 2008), they've started charging for the function room (and were sufficiently sniffy about my insistence that they'd previously given it us for free that I'm not willing to ask them about it again), but since only a handful of people replied to my request for a show-of-hands as to who's coming, I'd already decided to experiment with not booking a room for this meeting. So, the Antelope, this Thursday, from 6:30pm. I'll do a proper announcement tomorrow. Kake

I might, however, be available for completely coincidental drinking on the 1st. I'm still quite taken with the idea of wandering around Kew Gardens (free entry that day) in the afternoon before retiring to a nearby hostelry for some foamy beer. I'm not organising it though[0]. Hello! The November social of the London Perlmongers is a mere two days away. I hope you are all excited. This month, we're going back to the Edgar Wallace, where we have the upstairs function room booked from 6:30pm. The Edgar Wallace has eight handpumps and its own house beer, and serves decent food at reasonable prices.
