[ANNOUNCE] London Perl Mongers Technical Meeting 2012-04-11

2012-02-23 Thread Léon Brocard
London Perl Mongers organises technical meetings every two months. The
technical meetings are a chance to find out what has been going on in
the Perl community, what techniques people are using and how Perl
integrates with other software.

The next technical meeting will be on the 11th April 2012 from 7pm to
9pm (you may arrive earlier, please sign in at the reception). You have
to sign up to attend, see below.

This meeting is sponsored by Venda who are inviting the world-renowned
Damian Conway to amuse us for one evening and will appropriately be held
at the Conway Hall. Many thanks to Anthony Webster, Venda and everyone
involved for allowing us to use this wonderful venue.

Venda is a SaaS eCommerce provider with offices in London as well as the
US and Asia. The platform is built predominantly in Perl, and powers
over 100 sites for clients including Tesco and the BBC.

Damian will be presenting:

Temporally Quaquaversal Virtual Nanomachine Programming In Multiple
Topologically Connected Quantum-Relativistic Parallel Spacetimes... Made
Easy!

Watch in terror as Damian writes a Perl program to extract square
roots using nothing but quantum mechanics, general relativity, and
the very fabric of the space-time continuum.

Along the way we'll also investigate: Wittgenstein's dark secret;
the diminishing returns of physical computation; Roman philosophy;
when Super Science Adventures go wrong; the greatest Lego kit of all
time; the secret identity of Sith; carbon logic vs silicon logic;
the giants of 1930's physics; elementary spin-half quanta under
relativistic motion; CAT scans; Will Smith; bongos; drunken bets
involving penguins; algorithmic consistency; God's dice and the
problem of free will; intrinsic self-inconsistency; the many worlds
outside Copenhagen; and the inventor of stage diving.

What happens when Dirac meets Deutsch meets Damian? Mere anarchy is
loosed upon the world!

But then Australia is such a difficult country to keep track
of. On my first visit, some years ago, I passed the time on
the long flight reading a history of Australian politics in the
twentieth century, wherein I encountered the startling fact that
in 1967 the prime minister, Harold Holt, was strolling along a
beach in Victoria when he plunged into the surf and vanished. No
trace of the poor man was ever seen again.  This seemed doubly
astounding to me—first that Australia could just _lose_  a
prime minister (I mean, come on) and second that news of this
       had never reached me.

                        -- Bill Bryson,  /In a Sunburned Country/

I've just uploaded the first release candidate for Perl 5.14.0 to PAUSE.
Shortly, you'll find it at:

SHA1 sums for this release are:

While we go to lengths to ensure that new versions of Perl don't break
existing programs, it does happen. It's really, really important that
we catch unintentional breakage BEFORE we release Perl 5.14.0.
It is imperative that you test this release candidate with any software
written in Perl which you use or maintain.

Similarly, we test Perl on a variety of operating systems on a number of
platforms with several different compilers. If you're not 100% certain
that we're testing yours, NOW is the time to make sure that Perl 5.14.0
builds and passes its tests on your platform.

If no "showstopper" class bugs are found in the next 7 days, we will
release a virtually identical tarball as Perl 5.14.0 on Thursday, April
28, 2011.

2010-07-19 Thread Léon Brocard
By a happy coincidence, the regular London Perl Mongers social meeting
falls on the second day of the YAPC::Europe Perl conference in Pisa,
Italy. We shall be holding it at the Piazza delle Vettovaglie, which
has a few food and drink vendors. It'll start after the conference.

  Piazza delle Vettovaglie, Pisa
  http://conferences.yapceurope.org/ye2010/
  http://conferences.yapceurope.org/ye2010/wiki?node=LondonPM

Standard blurb:

Social meets are a chance for the various members of the group to meet
up face to face and chat with each other about things - both Perl and
(mostly) non-Perl - and newcomers are more than welcome. The monthly
meets tend to be bigger than the other ad hoc meetings that take place
at other times, and we make sure that they're in easy to get to
locations and the pub serves food (meaning that people can eat in the
bar if they want to). They normally start around 6.30pm (or whenever
people get there after work) and a group tends to be left come closing
time.

If you're a newcomer or other first timer (even if you've been lurking
on the mailing list or on IRC) then please seek Léon (the guy in orange
with a stuffed camel) out - we have a tradition that the leader of this
motley crew buys the new people a drink and introduces them to people.

[ANNOUNCE] London Perl Mongers Social Meeting Thursday 6th May at the Gunmakers

2010-04-30 Thread Léon Brocard
London Perl Mongers organises social meetings every month. The
technical meetings are a chance to chat informally with the Perl
community.

We're going back to the Gunmakers this Thursday (6th May), where the
lovely landlord Jeff always welcomes us with open arms, foamy beers,
non-foamy ciders and tasty meats!

There is also a general election on that day. You may wish to vote.

Social meets are a chance for the various members of the group to meet
up face to face and chat with each other about things - both Perl and
non-Perl - and newcomers are more than welcome. The monthly meets tend
to be bigger than the other ad hoc meetings that take place at other
times, and we make sure that they're in easy to get to locations and the
pub serves food (meaning that people can eat in the bar if they want
to). They normally start around 6.30pm (or whenever people get there
after work) and a group tends to be left come closing time.

If you're a newcomer or other first timer (even if you've been lurking
on the mailing list or on IRC) then please seek Léon (the guy in orange

motley crew buys the new people a drink and introduces them to people.

 Hi!

I'm writing to you from Amsterdam where the Booking.com headquarters are

currently working with my colleagues on finding new Developers to join our

like to see if it's possible to sponsor your Perl site and in exchange put a
banner (with a link to our career site) on your site? We have the banner
ready already, so you would just need to put it up in your site, in exchange
to a monetary compensation of course.

Please let me know if this is something you are interested in! I can be

So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the
hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of
making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking
the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.

There was nothing so VERY remarkable in that; nor did Alice think it so
VERY much out of the way to hear the Rabbit say to itself, 'Oh dear! Oh
dear! I shall be late!' (when she thought it over afterwards, it occurred
to her that she ought to have wondered at this, but at the time it all
seemed quite natural); but when the Rabbit actually TOOK A WATCH OUT
OF ITS WAISTCOAT-POCKET, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice
started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never
before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket, or a watch to take
out of it, and burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it,
and fortunately was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole
   under the hedge.

In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how
in the world she was to get out again.

                       - Lewis Carroll, /Alice's Adentures in Wonderland/

I've just uploaded the first release candidate for Perl 5.12.0 to
PAUSE. Shortly, you'll find it at:

   http://search.cpan.org/dist/perl-5.12.0-RC1/

SHA1 sums for this release are:

   d6b0357667582e515335ed89d86bcecb348a07c6  perl-5.12.0-RC1.tar.bz2
   d2616e5c193377901cc930290168d08f10b3bd1d  perl-5.12.0-RC1.tar.gz

The differences from RC0 are relatively small, consisting primarily of
documentation updates and a few small regression fixes.

It is imperative that you test this release candidate with any software
written in Perl which you use or maintain. If no "showstopper" class
bugs are found in the next 7 days, we will release a virtually identical
tarball as Perl 5.12.0.

You can find a list of errata - known bugs or modules known to be
incompatible with 5.12.0 - at http://dev.perl.org/perl5/errata.html

London Perl Mongers organises technical meetings every two months. The

the Perl community, what techniques people are using and how Perl
integrates with other software.

The next technical meeting will be on the 12th April from 7pm to 9pm

a prominent member of the Perl community, a proponent of
object-oriented programming, and the author of several books (Object
Oriented Perl, Perl Best Practices). You have to sign up to attend,
see below.

It will be held at the Prince Alfred pub in Bayswater and is hosted by
NET-A-PORTER.COM. Many thanks to Steve Purkis, NET-A-PORTER.COM and
everyone involved for allowing us to use this wonderful venue.

Damian will be presenting:

“You unlock this door with the key of a hash. Beyond it is another
dimension - a dimension of strange constructs, a dimension of
improbable behaviour. You're moving into a land of both weird syntax
and unlikely semantics, of unintended features and unexpected beauty.
You've just crossed over into... The Twilight Perl.” Join Damian for a
head-trip through a dozen or so arcane and sinister “features” of
Perl. Much of what you thought was required... isn’t; some of what you
thought was impossible... is easy. Cast off your strictures and
warnings and set your programs free. Embrace the Dark Side of the

I was really disappointed by the Wahaca in Canary Wharf, it's nowhere
near as good as the original one in Covent Garden.

Fwd: Perl 5.11.2 is now available

2009-11-20 Thread Léon Brocard
Please test this with your work code, as this will lead to Perl 5.12.0.

Leon

-- Forwarded message --
From: Léon Brocard
Date: 2009/11/20
Subject: Perl 5.11.2 is now available
To: Perl 5 Porters

The streets were pretty quiet, which was nice. They're always quiet here
at that time: you have to be wearing a black jacket to be out on the
streets between seven and nine in the evening, and not many people in the
area have black jackets. It's just one of those things. I currently live
in Colour Neighbourhood, which is for people who are heavily into colour.
All the streets and buildings are set for instant colourmatch: as you
walk down the road they change hue to offset whatever you're wearing.
When the streets are busy it's kind of intense, and anyone prone to
epileptic seizures isn't allowed to live in the Neighbourhood, however
 much they're into colour.
                 - Michael Marshall Smith, "Only Forward"

It gives me great pleasure to announce the release of Perl 5.11.2.

This is the third DEVELOPMENT release in the 5.11.x series leading to a
stable release of Perl 5.12.0. You can find a list of high-profile changes
in this release in the file "perl5112delta.pod" inside the distribution.

You can download the 5.11.2 release from:

 http://search.cpan.org/~lbrocard/perl-5.11.2/

The release's SHA1 signatures are:

 2988906609ab7eb00453615e420e47ec410e0077  perl-5.11.2.tar.gz
 0014442fdd0492444e1102e1a80089b6a4649682  perl-5.11.2.tar.bz2

We welcome your feedback on this release. If you discover issues
with Perl 5.11.2, please use the 'perlbug' tool included in this
distribution to report them. If Perl 5.11.2 works well for you, please
use the 'perlthanks' tool included with this distribution to tell the
all-volunteer development team how much you appreciate their work.

If you write software in Perl, it is particularly important that you test
your software against development releases. While we strive to maintain
source compatibility with prior stable versions of Perl wherever possible,
it is always possible that a well-intentioned change can have unexpected
consequences. If you spot a change in a development version which breaks
your code, it's much more likely that we will be able to fix it before the
next stable release. If you only test your code against stable releases
of Perl, it may not be possible to undo a backwards-incompatible change
which breaks your code.

Notable changes in this release:

* It is now possible to overload the C operator

* Extension modules can now cleanly hook into the Perl parser to define
new kinds of keyword-headed expression and compound statement

* The lowest layers of the lexer and parts of the pad system now have C
 APIs available to XS extensions

* Use of C<:=> to mean an empty attribute list is now deprecated

Perl 5.11.2 represents approximately 3 weeks development since Perl
5.11.1 and contains 29,992 lines of changes across 458 files from 38
authors and committers:

Abhijit Menon-Sen, Abigail, Ben Morrow, Bo Borgerson, Brad Gilbert,
Bram, Chris Williams, Craig A. Berry, Daniel Frederick Crisman, Dave
Rolsky, David E. Wheeler, David Golden, Eric Brine, Father
Chrysostomos, Frank Wiegand, Gerard Goossen, Gisle Aas, Graham Barr,
Harmen, H.Merijn Brand, Jan Dubois, Jerry D. Hedden, Jesse Vincent,
Karl Williamson, Kevin Ryde, Leon Brocard, Nicholas Clark, Paul
Marquess, Philippe Bruhat, Rafael Garcia-Suarez, Sisyphus, Steffen
Mueller, Steve Hay, Steve Peters, Vincent Pit, Yuval Kogman, Yves
Orton, and Zefram.

Many of the changes included in this version originated in the CPAN
modules included in Perl's core. We're grateful to the entire CPAN
community for helping Perl to flourish.

Jesse Vincent or a delegate will release Perl 5.11.3 on December 20, 2009.
Ricardo Signes will release Perl 5.11.4 on January 20, 2010.
Steve Hay will release Perl 5.11.5 on February 20, 2010.

Wow, there have been a lot of vague opinions about Skype on this

Sorry, I was a little over-eager in copying and pasting. We are having
dim sum this Thursday at Pearl Liang. There is no social this week.

Let there be pork dumplings, Leon

Time to go west again and to Pearl Liang near Paddington station,
seeing as the social meeting also on Thursday is actually *in*
Paddington station at the Mad Bishop and Bear:

 http://london.pm.org/pipermail/london.pm-announce/2009-June/000152.html

London.pm dim sum is a social event where we meet up every Thursday at
1pm at a different Chinese restaurant, spend about an hour (and about
£10 cash) eating tasty dim sum (steamed and fried dumplings), then go
our separate ways.

More camels

2009-08-18 Thread Léon Brocard
The camels are multiplying! Amelia is the official London.pm camel.
Why a camel? The Programming Perl book has a camel on the front:

The Shadowcat guys have a Niles much like Amelia. Our glorious
ex-leader Simon also has a Niles (I hope he's taking good care of
him). Peter brought a huge camel to the emergency social on Friday.
It's also a way for newcomers to recognize Perl mongers in a pub. You
can get one from Amazon. You can also get one from eBay (eBay
concentrated on selling Beanie Babies and Barbie Dolls collectibles
for its first few years). Let camel proliferation commence!

Emergency social: Gunmakers Friday 6pm

2009-08-10 Thread Léon Brocard
Paul and Jacinta, Perl trainers extraordinare from the land downunder,
will be in London for a few hours on Friday. This calls for showing
them a nice little pub and some good local beer, so we shall be at the
Gunmakers from 6pm on Friday. All are welcome to come join us. I'll
have a stuffed camel with me and may be wearing orange.

Portugal doesn't appear to have much dim sum. This is too bad, as dim
sum has stolen custard tarts from Portugal, and they are tasty. Let's
go back to China Town this week, to Super Star!

Emails posted to the -announce list also go to other non-Perl announce
