The Perl community is huge, so it hasn't been had any "main" forum like you're
looking for, for many years - if ever. That's why everyone is asking "what are
you *actually* looking for".

If you're looking for authoriy voices, they can be found everywhere, all of
them specialized in certain fields and often with their own rules and
traditions. Several of us on this mailing list may be able to help you find
the right forum (if there is one) for your purposes, but we can't really help
you if you're not willing to go beyond your current position.

You won't find a "CEO of Perl" or some "Perl Steering committee" mailing list.
There isn't one. We're all distributed and only as organized as we have to,
and as long as the Perl community remains a volunteer effort, that's not
likely to change.

Having said that, volunteering comes with a cost and one thing many are wary
of, is wasting the (rather precious) time of core volunteers. That's certainly
one important reason why we ask you what your intentions are. And since you
haven't offered anything substantial, this makes certain warning bells ring. I
hope you understand.

Occasionally one gets this sort of "I'll just keep repeating myself
verbatim" treatment, but usually from people working in call centres or
help desks of some sort, not from someone this list might consider a fellow
community member. It's a little bit frustrating, because we'd like to help.
But hey ho.

And what would you do with that information (if it existed) once you
received it? Are you trying to update some sort of website or knowledge
base about programming languages? Or do you have a specific question
you would post to that list (if it existed)?

OR WHAT?

If you keep being non-informative about the context of your question,
most people here will just continue to ignore you.

That's very true of many channels, but not at all with #perl6 (freenode).
It's almost like it's not a perl group at all.

Some people, when confronted with a problem, think "I know, I'll ask
on IRC." Now they have two problems.

Originally general discussion was on comp.lang.perl.misc which died with Usenet.

Mailing lists seem to be going the same way (at least for general
discussion where
they never seem to work very well).

People mostly use websites such as the two mentioned above and blogs.perl.org

IRC is particularly strong in the Perl 6 community.

Try stackoverflow or perl monks rather than a list.

Mailing lists kind of suck for most question/answer sequences; what
they are good at is discussion (witness this thread).

For general perl questions,
http://perlmonks.org/?node=Seekers+of+Perl+Wisdom or stackoverflow.

In case this adverserial conversation turns unpleasant, I think Chris
is pointing out that if you explain why you're asking a question we
can provide more helpful answers.

You've already received the correct answer "there isn't one" but if
you tell us what you would do with such a list if one existed, we
might be able to point you at other helpful things.
