I'll try again but with a new email thread:

Hi Alkis,

Ah, now I get how OpenGL relates to LTSP and the various DEs. We've been
able to use fat clients for several years so nice to know that GNOME 3 is a
solid option. What I've read, seems like it has similar or better
performance options than Unity.

Seems strange that a font was chosen as default for GNOME 3 (and thus
Ubuntu 18.04) which doesn't support Greek (and other languages') glyphs.
Really. I wonder how that happened.

Thanks for the further details.

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] Curious--impact of GNOME 3 on LTSP-pnp?

2017-07-24 Thread David Groos
Interesting that GNOME 2 version has better rendering of Greek characters
than another, perhaps because it has been around longer? Alkis had said
that Mate was lighter weight than Unity, I didn't know that it was lighter
than GNOME 3. But just did some further reading and looks like GNOME 3 does
also want 3D hardware acceleration like Unity.
Thanks for letting me know, Richard.

[Ltsp-discuss] Curious--impact of GNOME 3 on LTSP-pnp?

2017-07-23 Thread David Groos
Hi All,
Just curious how Ubuntu's movement from Unity to GNOME 3 is likely to
affect the path of ltsp-pnp. I'm pretty sure that the Greek initiative of
ltsp uses MATE which is based on GNOME 2, might there be a change there?
Just wondering if this opens any new possibilities or challenging problems
(or more likely both!).

[Ltsp-discuss] epoptes over -X ssh

2017-05-06 Thread David Groos
Hello,

I've been launching epoptes remotely using ssh -X so that I can remotely
close all discovered clients before rebooting the ltsp server. Been working
great. The issue is that, of the 6 servers I manage, 1 of the 6 throws the
following error message instead of launching epoptes. This isn't a major
problem as I can just go to this classroom and work locally--only 6 weeks
left to this school year before creating a fresh server image w/ 16.04.
But, thought it might be at least useful to share out this error message.

Thanks,
David

[Ltsp-discuss] Epoptes command via ssh?

2017-04-13 Thread David Groos
I often ssh into a remote server to update it and the client image.
Afterwards I want to reboot the server. If I reboot the server with clients
running they get 'detached' from the server and need to be rebooted
themselves, a hassle for the teacher of that classroom.

It would require much less communication/coordination if I could just issue
a command via ssh to shutdown all detected clients after the
updating/image-rebuilding.

Does such a thing exist and if so, what would that command be?

Thanks,
David

Wow! that was close, almost updated my Firefox this morning. Thanks Alkis.

Now, I just tried the java app in question (ends in .jnlp) on my mac which
has FF v. 52 and get the message "What should Firefox do with this file?"
and I click on "Java Web Start" and it starts! Now this seems to contradict
what you are saying, or perhaps this website has ... OK don't really
understand some of these technologies. My questions are:

   1. since it seems to work on my Mac on FF 52, does that mean that this
website HAS updated to 'web api' so I don't have to worry about the java
apps on that site working w/FF?
   2. If I do have to concern myself with this for the phet site, how can I
set FF to stay at the latest version of 51.x?

[Ltsp-discuss] help page on auto-setting firefox java prefs in clients?

2017-03-08 Thread David Groos
Hi All,

Using 14.04 ltsp-pnp fat clients. When a student is browsing/loading a
java-based sim such as on
https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/energy-forms-and-changes the client
asks a few things:

   1. "What should Firefox do with this file?" User selects 'open with
   IcedTea...'.
   2. "Your Java version is out of date what would you like to do?" If I
select "update to newer version" that leads to a dead end of course, So I
choose "Later" and it keeps working...
   3. "Do you want to run this application" and I chose "Run" and it works.

Is there a way to universally deal with #2 above and #1 would be nice too?
I've re-built the client but still get the 'update to newer version'
prompt. I remember there used to be a way of editing Firefox pref file in
the chroot but now use pnp so that's different I think. Also seems at one
time I added a customized pref file by cp to everyone's home directory.
Looking for a pre-existing help page on this if available (With google help
I can do Greek-->English translate!).

Thanks!

I suggest we use iframes instead of just links to pages that are maintained

I also don't have this problem. I'm using firefox and 14.04 w/LTSP FAT
clients with Unity desktop.

You haven't mentioned what many things you have tried to solve this problem
yet!

   - Do you remember the extra addons/extensions you have in firefox? What
   are they?
   - Have you tried completely removing ff, moving/backing up your
   .~/.mozilla folder and doing a fresh install?What other non-standard
software or alterations do you have on your system?
   - Does it crash on both the ltsp server and on the ltsp clients?

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] cannot build fat client image on Ubuntu16.04

2016-12-28 Thread David Groos
Hey Kentarou -- it's fine right now because I'm using my old 14.04 system!
In 6 months or so I will again try to solve the LDAP/AD problem with 16.04.
Thanks and best of luck to you as well!

2016-12-27 Thread David Groos
Hi Kentarou,

It looks like the setup you describe is pretty different from what I've
been using. Thank you for offering to translate your directions, I won't
ask for that now. In the upcoming summer (june-august) I will try to switch
from 14.04 to 16.04 again, first with powerbroker (maybe I mis-configured
when I set it up) and if that doesn't work I'll explore other methods--and
get on the ltsp-discuss list-serve. So I may ask for your support--and that
translation--then.

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] cannot build fat client image on Ubuntu16.04

2016-12-26 Thread David Groos
Hi Kentarou, did you record how you set up the LDAP on your system? I've
used likewise open (now powerbroker open) since 2010 to connect my Ubuntu
LTSP server to our districts AD servers. However, this year when I
attempted to switch from 14.04 to 16.04 I was unable to get AD
authentication to work with powerbroker open in the time available so we
are still using the old 14.04 setup. If you kept notes on how you setup
LDAP on your LTSP server or you have some web page you felt was especially
helpful, please share! Not sure when I will re-try solving this but it will
be good to have this info on record.

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] ltsp-update-image hangs

To make use of the school district's AD I use PowerBroker Open (
https://www.powerbrokeropen.org/) and have been using it since 2010
(formerly called "likewise open"). This software allows me to join the
domain and authenticate to it.

2016-09-25 Thread David Groos
I checked:
lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID:Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS
Release:14.04
Codename:trusty

And as far as I was able to tell that is the one you figured:
linux-image-generic-lts-vivid.
I'll do what you suggest tomorrow after school (in case there is an issue
I'll have some time to address it).

2016-09-24 Thread David Groos
1) output of command at: http://paste.ubuntu.com/23224929/

2) I forgot to mention that I've tried rebooting (and did again) and it has
made no difference. Also, forgot to mention in problem description that
updating the image did work 1 time a few days ago. Also didn't mention that
1-2 weeks ago i accepted the suggestion to update the HWE (at login now
says, "Your Hardware Enablement Stack (HWE) is supported until April
2019"). It changed my kernal from 3.xx to 4.4.0-38-generic and this problem
started after that. Also, I'm having an xorg problem with my login screen
showing on a dual monitor setup, partly solved it a week ago by removing
MATE...

-- Running htop in another terminal window while above command was hanging
produced output shown here: http://pasteboard.co/6YEjkwVx7.png . Seems
strange that userdel was running. As I watched, about every 15 seconds or
so it showed a different local user.

Thanks Alkis!

[Ltsp-discuss] (no subject)

2016-09-23 Thread David Groos
Hi All,

When I try to update the client image on the ltsp-pnp 14.04 server I run:
sudo ltsp-update-image --cleanup /
and the system just hangs: no output. After awhile I press control-c and
then this error message is printed:
"failed to remove ‘/tmp/tmp.75v6rgFYwg’: No such file or directory"
I've googled this and haven't found anything to help me trouble-shoot.

Any ideas?
Thanks,

Hi Adam,

Maybe this will help? There's a place in the lts.conf file where you can
list those things that are on the server that you don't want put into the
client image. The info to do this is on Alkis' ltsp-pnp page at:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp in the "editing
lts.conf" section.

2016-08-31 Thread David Groos
Makes sense, thanks again.

Sounding like time to do a fresh install. I poked around in the logs as to
why this happens:

sudo ltsp-update-image --cleanup /
[sudo] password for xyz:
^Crmdir: failed to remove '/tmp/tmp.f6EaWaAzef': No such file or directory

and nothing sticks out.

[Ltsp-discuss] LDAP/AD user can log into shell at client but not at the splash screen. Local user, neither.

2016-08-31 Thread David Groos
Hi again,

After patching (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ltsp/+bug/1610304) as described
in my just-posted forum e-mail, I got some interesting results with the
logins.

   1. I applied patch and rebooted the server (though didn't try to update
   ltsp image)
   2. Booted a fat client, then tried to login w/admin user account, didn't
   work.
   3. Returned to server, Right-clicked on client "2A" icon in Epoptes
   window:
a) execute --> open terminal --> Root, locally.
   4. In client "local, root terminal": cat /var/log/auth.log (sorry, can't
   copy/paste): https://ibin.co/2tX7YbEdWtpR.png
   5. Repeated with an LDAP/AD user and got exactly same results (nothing
   extra printed to log)
   6. At client pressed "Ctrl + Alt + F2" and dropped me into a login shell
   7. Tried to login w/the admin account but said, "login incorrect " and
in the log added these 3 lines (also same results for attempt with normal
   local user): https://ibin.co/2tX8IBQtevmL.png
   8. at client tried to login with LDAP user and it works! log added these
   3 lines: https://ibin.co/2tX8n5pLa5RR.png

*Summary*: Neither local nor LDAP user can log in at client. When dropping
into shell, however, LDAP user can log in but local can not.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
David

[Ltsp-discuss] Patching /usr/share/ldm/rc.d/X01-localapps gives unanticipated results

2016-08-31 Thread David Groos
Hi Folks,

-- I'm using ltsp-pnp Ubuntu 16.01.
-- Just joined the server to the district AD server Using Open PowerBroker
(formerly Likewise Open--been doing this since 2010)
-- can no longer log into clients with local clients either.

To begin to address this problem I patched /usr/share/ldm/rc.d/X01-localapps
using the patch from here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ltsp/+bug/1610304.

There seem to be 2 unintended consequences:

   1. When I log in on the server (via regular gui) I get Image shown here:
https://imagebin.ca/v/2tWrqAQ2Ee2y. After entering the password it says
"Access denied" twice and doesn't log in. But, when I then click into the
"log In" box, it logs me in!
   2. When sitting at the server or remotely sshed into the server, I try
to "sudo ltsp-update-image --cleanup / "and it just hangs. When I Control +
C, I get the following error message: ^Crmdir: failed to remove
'/tmp/tmp.6nLBVnjB0z': No such file or directory.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
David G

[Ltsp-discuss] Info lists on Epoptes?

2016-08-26 Thread David Groos
Anyone know if there is a way to get a spreadsheet of the info that pops up
when selecting a client and right-clicking and selecting the 'Information'
option? This would be a great tool for start of the year setup eg checking
amt of ram on new clients, get mac address for creating the list of devices
to add to lts.conf to allow for WOL.

Now that would be nice, run a script that creates a properly formatted text
file w/MAC # and a place holder where one could enter in client specific
info for copy/paste into the lts.conf. Or better yet, on the (suggested)
spreadsheet that gives the info on the selected clients, include a column
for an administrator-defined client name, then press some button and that
info is placed into the lts.conf file, properly placed and formatted :-)
Just brainstorming here...

Thanks,
David

Interesting, I assumed that the 1.14 would have more bug-fixes as this page
seems to imply: http://mate-desktop.com/blog/2016-04-08-mate-1-14-released/

Hi Jigish

Nice to see such activity for education. Looks like someone/s has put a lot
of effort in loading up that image. For my use I'll actually be stripping
off applications from the basic Mate iso. Looks like I can do a post 1.12
install of 1.14 with:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/xenial-mate
sudo apt update
sudo apt dist-upgrade

Thanks for the reference,

[Ltsp-discuss] Mate vs Unity in "low graphics mode"

2016-08-16 Thread David Groos
Hi LTSP folks!

First post here. I recently saw on ubuntu.com website (link with pertinent
text pasted below) in their announcement of 16.04.1. Wonder how Unity under
low graphics mode works compared to Mate. Am leaning towards Mate since
it's quick AND used in Greek schools (so more supported). But, students do
like Unity. Anyone know how these compare for LTSP-pnp (will be using FAT
clients)? I'm wondering about speed and reliability.

Thanks,
David G

From:
https://insights.ubuntu.com/2016/07/28/ubuntu-version-16-04-point-1-is-out/

Low graphics mode
An interesting improvement for users of older hardware, those who might
access their machines over a remote-desktop connection or users of virtual
machines. We have been working on improving the optimisations for lower
powered graphics hardware or software backed rendering. The Unity 7 desktop
makes use of modern graphics hardware to display desktop components such as
the dash and to provide visual enhancements to the daily operation of the
desktop. In order to speed up the rendering of the desktop on less powerful
machines we have reduced or removed a lot of the animations and blur
effects. Low graphics mode has always been included in Unity 7 but we are
now a being a bit more aggressive when it comes to disabling some of these
effects. Unity 7 will automatically detect if your hardware is supported
for the full experience and if not it will enable low graphics mode. Users
can also manually enable low graphics mode but those instructions are
beyond the scope of this post and will be followed up in a separate post.
Keep an eye on the usual social media channels for more information.
