[luau] News - Mandrake 9.0 vs. Mandrake 8.2 for new Linux users

This article concentrates on describing a basic Mandrake 9.0
installation and setup from a new user's viewpoint, using nothing but
default settings all the way through. I've also tossed in a few notes on
how Mandrake 9.0 differs from Mandrake 8.2 and other previous Mandrake
releases.

and look for the threads "cd burner"

I got a lot of great responses last month to nearly the exact same question
(I did not inquire about freebsd.) It turned out that as long as the burner
was made to the atapi or ide compliant, it was okay. Warren and MonMotha
made the following statements, Warren's first and MonMotha's second.

For the most part this is true, and it often even extends to USB (and
possibly firewire) external burners. The only burners I've seen that
isn't standardized are some HP burners (both SCSI and USB, but not IDE
it looks like). However, Linux has drivers to support them at the
kernel level as well. cdrecord also has support I do believe.scott

I have a TDK that works in every distro I've tried, but most any of the newer
ATA drives should work. I have heard of people having problems with Sony,
but no first-hand knowledge of that

Good luck

I have an HP something-or-other that works fine. I didn't think brand
mattered with CD burners and Linux. They all use the same generic SCSI
drivers so I thought.

Re: [luau] News - Mandrake 9.0 vs. Mandrake 8.2 for new Linux users

2002-10-02 Thread W. Wayne Liauh
I think both Mandrake and Red Hat are moving too fast and trying to do
too many things. While this is EXACTLY what is needed in order to catch
up with Windows, traces of sloppiness (i.e., bugs) can be found in quite
a few places. (Even Windows 3.0 had better quality control than most of
the Linux distros.)

What's the first thing we would do after we installed Microsoft Windows
(98, 2K, XP)? Go to Microsoft web site and download and install all the
patches and service packs. Why should we expect things could be
different with the freely downloaded Linux ISO's?

Customization (of "standard" Linux distros to suit our needs and
likings) and collection of user experiences will be the next critical
step in order to expand the Linux universe (so that we can get UH to
offer Linux courses).

I have been thinking about putting together an "almost state of the art"
PC and placing it at our State Bar office to bring the awareness to our
bar membership of a possible Linux office solution, which, at least
potentially, should offer the lure of better security and better
cost-effectiveness. (Cost is a very important factor here. Our parent
firm in Houston pays about $110K for new hires, here, the best starting
salary I heard is $72.5K.)

Before I do that, I would like to put that Linux office machine in a
semi-publicly accessible place such as Midpac (Warren? Tom?) so that
many would-be consultants can kick its tires before offering their
services to at least the bar members.

I will be out of town most of October. Suggestions will be greatly
appreciated.

[luau] Slow routing

2002-10-02 Thread Michael Ableyev

Hi all,
I havent posted to the list in a long while.. have been relocating and busy in
general.

Now (I think) I'm back for a while.

...And already I have questions to ask.
Is anyone aware of any bandwidth throtling enabled by default in Mandrake 9.0?
Perhaps thats not the cause of my slowdowns, so I should describe my little
setup.. perhaps someone will see a problem and make me aware of it :)

Have a desktop and a laptop with 1 nic each connected to a 10Mbit hub, cable
modem is also plugged into the same hub. Mandrake running on the desktop (just
had to see whats it like) and Slackware on the laptop.
Now, having only 1 ip provided by the cable company and not wanting to run a
separate machine for a router, I have both of them acting as routers.
I have a little script (same on both machines: "cable on / cable off") that when
needed simply assigns a local ip to eth0:1 and gets the external ip from the
modem, then sets up the iptables rules as needed and sends an update to
dyndns.org. Then when I want to boot the desktop to windows to play some game
the script releases the ip and I type "cable on" on the laptop to assume the
same role. Now everything would be fine, but... when the laptop is acting as the
router I get 8mbps downstream and 700kbps up (yes, Optimum Online is that fast!)
on both machines (actually I only see about 5mbps down on the desktop but i
think thats because the hub can't handle more), and when the desktop is doing
the routing, I still get the same speed on the desktop but the laptop only sees
600/600kpbs of it.

Any ideas?

Yes Hi Val and Sony. I have two DVD and CDRWs that work great and I believe
they run at $59 each at CompUSA. Check out last Sundays ad.

Just about anything should work, at least in the IDE and SCSI
departments, but I'm a big fan of Plextors. They're expensive, but very
nice burners.

Usually, it comes down to a choice of buying a cheap burner but having
it be picky about the media, or getting a nice burner that costs a bit
more but beign able to reliably burn just about anything you throw in
the tray (that's burnable of course :).

My little 16x10x40 PlexWriter is really nice. I can basically ignore
those little burning speed ratings and throw
$FREE_MEDIA_AFTER_REBATE_OF_THE_MONTH in the tray and have it pop out a
CD that plays in almost anything.

When I took the CDRom back because it has never worked under Win 98 or

Al, I had a burner from Smart & Friendly before. I think S&F didn't go out of
business for no reason.
My burner started doing approximately the same thing... ...just before I got rid

WTF... if you buy the CompUSA extended warranty the trade-in should be
"no questions asked". That's what the sales people always said to me
when they asked if I wanted the extended coverage.

I wonder if that changed.
