In addition, the FreeS/WAN stuff can actually be set up with L2TPd to
allow for Windows P-T-P VPNs using Layer 2 Tunnel Protocol. I've used
this a great deal.

[luau] Vulnerabilities in MS Office

2003-09-05 Thread Hawaii Linux Institute
*Most Linux developers don't pay much attention to Microsoft
applications products. However, recent reports have re-confirmed what
we WordPerfect users have known all along--i.e., Microsoft Office is a
very unsafe product:

The following is an example of the recent report:

"Microsoft issued another flock of security alerts Wednesday, including
notice of a "critical" flaw that affects many of its Office applications.*

"The most serious flaw, in the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA)
software, could allow an attacker to gain control of a vulnerable PC.
VBA is used to develop desktop applications that tie into other
Microsoft products.

"As detailed in Microsoft's security bulletin
,
a malicious user could create a document with a VBA application that's
designed to overflow the buffer--the chunk of memory that's allocated to
a program--and then run other code.

"The flaw affects recent versions of Office applications that support
VBA scripting, including the 2002, 2000 and 97 versions of Access,
Excel, PowerPoint and Word. It can also be used with Project 2002 and
2000, Visio 2002 and 2000 and Works Suite 2002, 2001 and 2000. Several
applications sold under Microsoft's Business Solutions brand also are at
risk, including version 7.5 of the Great Plains accounting software.

. . ."

Ironically, the safest way to run Microsoft Office (if you have to, but
no one can deny that MS Office is a very feature-rich program) is to run
it in Linux under WINE.

I don't know for sure about FastMail's motivations, but I would guess
the 40MB limit is to punish freeloaders who may try to abuse the
service, while giving much greater access to serious users willing to
pay a small amount of money.

In any case the free account with server-side mailing list filter
options is more than adequate for a mailing list account as a
replacement for Hotmail.

Re: [luau] Free to a good home

2003-09-05 Thread Tom Hackett

Hi Duane,

I could really use a few extra ATX power supplies. The Compaq power
supplies you mentioned are ATX right? I'd be very happy to give them a
good home if you haven't already given them away.

I was working on a project to adapt an ATX power supply to power an
iMac and I'm not sure but I think I fried the one in my favorite old
case. I feel so stupid. I've had it in the back of my mind I should
replace it with a new power supply but it's not urgent so I haven't got
around to it. If I could take even just one off your hands for you
that would be great! If you've already promise them to someone else or
thrown them out it's not big deal I'll pick one up on my own soon
enough.

Hi Warren,

I know I haven't been that active on the mailing list recently but I've
been catching up tonight, reading through all the messages that look
interesting.
I noticed you suggested http://www.fastmail.fm/ for free email. They
seem really good from what their website says. I like that they offer
accounts for just a one time fee and you get your own sub-domain! Also
they have IMAP over SSL access, which is what I always look for.
I actually was looking for a free email service a while back and
eventually found myrealbox.com after a long time spent of searching on
the web. myrealbox.com also offers web mail and POP and IMAP, and also
supports connections over SSL. It's really supposed to be a
demonstration of what Novell's NetMail software can do for business
that want to setup their own email server. I'm generally pleased with
it. The only reason I bring it up is because there are some limits I
noticed for fastmail.fm's free account where you're not supposed to
exceed 40MB/month of email transfer which seemed odd, and you're not
supposed to use the free account for business. I don't know for sure
but I don't think myrealbox.com has anything like that. I just wanted
to let you know about another free email service that seems pretty
good. Thanks for letting me know about fastmail.fm I might give them a
try sometime in the future.

As an alternative mail service, please consider this free webmail

They are run by some BSD users in Australia, with a larger free quota,
extra services like spamassassin, webmail and IMAP access. I don't
